Nora Idoeta takes over for Hector Altamira as President of the Itxaropen Basque Club in Saladillo

Nora Idoeta The Itxaropen Basque Club in Saladillo, in the Argentinean province of Buenos Aires, has let us know about its new board of directors after its mandatory election held at its annual General Assembly meeting. There Nora Idoeta was elected as the president and will take over from Hector Altamira who was elected club secretary.

Euskara Jendea, an interesting documentary series on the Basques reaches ETB

Throughout the documentary the history of Basques and their language is provided through dramatizations (photoEuskara Jendea) As previously published on EuskalKultura.com, the six documentaries that make up the audiovisual version of the work, "Basques. Their Language throughout History", by Juan Carlos Etxegoien, also known as Xamar, was officially presented in the Basque Country between October 10 and 25 even if its TV premiere will take place tomorrow, Wednesday at 10:15pm local time on ETB1. It can also be enjoyed in the Diaspora for free by going to the Videos page on www.eitb.com.

Alex Garate, from Elgoibar, Gipuzkoa, has been in Argentina for 14 years. He found this “corner of the world,” when he was 23 when he graduated with a degree in Physics from the University of the Basque Country and came to continue his studies in Cordoba. This first experience in the country was decisive and that is why, after going back to the Basque Country for a few years, he decided to return to Argentina to establish himself definitively in Unquillo, in the province of Cordoba. Physics teacher at the local high school, accordionist in the “Zingaros-New Gypsy Tango” group and passionate mountaineer, Alex Garate represents, without a different Basque immigrant profile.

Basque Autumn in Poland: translation workshops in Wroclaw and a concert of songs and stories in Poznan

Basque writer Juan Kruz Igerabide, left, at a translation workshop as part of the Wroclaw Short Story Festival (photoEtxepare) Basque music and literature has arrived to Poland this October, thanks to various activities organized in the city of Wroclaw and Poznan with the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute. First, Juan Kruz Igerabide, Elixabete Manterola and Harkaitz Cano all participated in the Wroclaw Short Story Festival. In Poznan, at the inauguration of the Basque language and culture lectureship, former student Weronika Nowak gave a concert dedicated to music with a Basque narrative, video of which is included here.

Day of the Immigrant in Chascomus, Argentina (photoEE) Two locally important events took place in Chascomus, Argentina during the month of October. On the one hand, the 23rd edition of the Basque Festival, organized by the local Basque club was held, and on the other, the Immigrants Day also took place with an extensive program of events. Outside of the city and on the sports front, the Basque club was also very well represented by its youth: pelotaris Lorenzo Vázquez and Estanislao Alfonsín had a great showing at the VIII World Under-22 division for Basque Pilota in Uruguay.

New board of directors elected at the Euzko Etxea in Villa Maria, Cordoba led by Ismael Martinez de Alegria

New club president at the Euzko Etxea of Villa Maria, Ismael Martinez de Alegria with his predecessor, Raul Onnainty (photoEE) The Villa Maria Basque club (Cordoba, Argentina) called a general assembly meeting last week to elect new members of its board of directors. Led by Ismael Martinez de Alegria, the assembly elected among other officers, a new vice-president, in Gerardo Echeverria who is taking over for Juan Francisco Pagola, who is now an alternate director. EuskalKultura.com wishes all the success to the new board, as it is known that the club also will host the 2013 National Argentinean Basque week (Semana Vasca) the second weekend of November.

Closure of the NABO meeting on Oct 12th in Eusko Etxea of New York (photo EuskalKultura.com) NABO President Valerie Arrechea included a message in today's Astero regarding the New York Euzko Etxea Basque Club's celebrations held Oct 12th and 13th that included the NABO fall meeting with Lehendakari Urkullu addressing the delegates, on his first visit to the US, at the New York Basque club. NABO's representation also incuded the Utah'ko Triskalariak, the only US dance troupe attending the event, who served as ambassadors for all NABO club dancers.

Basque language teachers in European Basque clubs support contests to create Basque shorts

Basque teachers from European Basque clubs in front of the Arte Basque club in Mallorca (photoHABE) The Artea Basque club in Mallorca was the host of the annual Basque teachers in European Basque clubs meeting that took place on October 17-20. Attending the meeting were instructors from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca, Brussels, London, Bordeaux, Paris, Rome and Berlin. Those unable to attend were those from Valladolid, Murcia and Pau. It was agreed at the meeting, among various proposals, to support the creation of short films in Basque to make classes more dynamic, and to motivate students, in light of the success this initiative had in both Barcelona and Madrid.

The San Nicolas Basque club remains committed to its solidarity project and will create four mini-Etxe Nasaias

Thanks to the Etxe Nasaia program thousands of school children have been fed by the San Nicolas Euzkal Etxea (photoNanomade) The goal is the same for the Etxe Nasaia that have taken place for the last 11 years at the Basque club, but because of difficulties in getting around, children may not be able to get to the city, and so the club will go to the villages to carry out the activity. Successful in any form, the initiative gathers several hundred children who will not only enjoy a wonderful plate of chicken and rice, but will also learn about the Basque club and the Basques. After having carried out events in La Emilia and Rojo, the next “mini” Etxe Nasaias will take place in Campos Salles and Conesa.

Dancers from Gure Etxea at the club's San Fermin celebration (PhotoEE) In the province of Rio Negro, the Gure Etxea Basque club in General Roca doesn’t only cultivate and promote the Basque culture at home but is also a great diffuser of the customs and traditions of Euskal Herria in other cities in the area. Invited by organizers, Gure Etxea participated with its dance group at the Festival of Communities of Villa Regina and Lamarque. The club also continues to organized activities locally, like selling food and celebrating important dates in the Basque community.
