Basque literature will be present for another year at the Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico where Basque publishers will have a stand. In addition, the director for the Promotion of Basque at the Etxepare Institute, Mari Jose Olaziregi and writer Karmele Jaio will participate in events with students, lecturers and an international meeting of storytellers. On December 9th, Jaio will travel to Mexico City where she will give talks at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the Center for Literary Creation, Xavier Villaurrutia, among other activities.

Today at 10:30am the 48th edition of Durangoko Azoka, the main Fair of the Basque Book and Music gets started with a special day dedicated to children. During the day a 1,000 students coming from 22 schools will visit the fair, enjoying the various activities organized expressly for them in the Kabi@ space with workshops on new technology. Tomorrow, American Anthropologist, William A. Douglass, Center for Basque Studies promoter will receive the Argizaiola award for his contribution to the Basque culture in the US Basque Diaspora. Many of the celebrations of the International Day of the Basque Language in the Diaspora took place the weekend before (last weekend) and many others will take place the weekend after (next one) while in other clubs, it was celebrated on its date, December 3rd. Following is the first wave of celebrations that took place in Argentina with festivities at Euskaldunak Denak Bat (Arrecifes), Gerora (Córdoba), Unión Vasca (Bahía Blanca), Etorritakoengatik (Puerto Madryn) and Eusko Aterpea, de Gral. Rodríguez, in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Chubut.

The Paris Euskal Etxea has been for 10 years in its clubhouse in the neighborhood of Saint Ouen, where it has become greatly involved with its neighbors and local associations. To celebrate this anniversary the club organized a complete program of activities from November 1-23. The atmosphere at these events was wonderful, according to member Maitane Larronde. One of the most striking events was the basquizing of the name of the neighborhood, where the mayor of Saint Ouen, Jacqueline Rouillon, re-baptized it as Santuene, a name chosen by the PEE members. The registration is now open for the Basque Summer University 2014 that will take place at the Euskal Echea School in Buenos Aires from February 17-28. As in prior editions, classes will be held in the morning and afternoon and a project can be submitted to get credit for the program and invited professors will also participate. In the area of sports, they are working on bringing Iñaki Perurena. The cost of the entire program is $200, or $100 per course. Deadline to enroll is December 16.

To celebrate Euskera Day, the Azkue Foundation has presented the 2.0 version of Mintzatu, a website that includes places where Basque is spoken in the world. Innovations include versions for smartphones, more resources, games and a contest that will reward outstanding users. There will be checks of 100 Euros to spend on a online book and music store to the user that creates the largest number of tags in different places (and gets the most towns) and for whoever gets the largest number of hidden trophies. Today, December 3, the International Day of Euskera will be celebrated, a festivity that Basque all around the world join together and celebrate a language, that despite its number of speakers, has survived centuries in the Basque Country as well as in the Diaspora. “Mundiala” is the motto chosen by the Basque Government for its campaign in favor of Euskera, a language that thanks to the Basques has reached unexpected corners of the world. Following, we include the festivities in some of these like Berlin, Leipzig, Reno, Salto, Valencia…A trip around the world thanks to Euskera!

On November 25 and 26 the Complutense University in Madrid was converted into the meeting point of philologist and linguists invited by the Basque Philology Department to participate in the Second Conference on Multilingualism on the Iberian Peninsula. The organizers took advantage of a visit of Kike Amonarriz to Madrid to record a video to this philologist and comic that they used to introduce the events. Amonarriz was in Madrid a week before to record his program Tribuaren Berbak that is broadcast on ETB. We include the report of the program recorded in the streets of Madrid.

With the New Year just around the corner, many Basque clubs in the Souther Cone are finalizing the details for their farewell to the year and a well-deserved rest. That’s not the case at the Euzko Etxea in Necochea that will continue its traditional Aste Nagusia (Semana Grande or Big Week) celebration for another year. The festivities will take place from January 20-25, 2014. The club invites the community to plan its vacations at this seaside resort and share a week in which Necochea will reverberate the rhythm of the drums in Donostia.

The campaign #mundiala travels the world by a tweet, at the same time marking the Basques presence there. Since its presentation on November 22, nearly 15,000 Twitter users have participated in this initiative, with a gesture as simple as sending or retweeting a message with hashtag #mundiala. The world map is available on the campaign’s website where the points where messages have been sent from are illuminated. EuskalKultura.com has already joined in, what about you?
