The City of Buenos Aires published “Vascos in Buenos Aires”, a book on the city's Basque presence

The cover of "Basques in Buenos Aires The work is part of a collection edited by the city’s government to present the identities of various communities in the capital. Vascos en Buenos Aires (Basques in Buenos Aires) will be presented on December 4th at 18:30 in the Dorado Room of the Cultural Center in a ceremony that will be attended by local city government officials, and the Delegation of Euskadi in Argentina-Mercosur. This is the fifth volume of the collection following others dedicated to the Japanese, Italian, and the Jewish and Armenian genocides. It will be presented in the Basque Country in January.

Miami’s Euskal Etxea will gather this Sunday in support of Joseba Andoni, an 8 year old Basque boy from Bakio

Joseba Andoni who is a big music fan (photo Larrazabal Family) Miami’s Euskal Etxea continues its campaign in support of Joseba Andoni Larrazabal, a child from Bakio who has been in Florida since 2007. After suffering an accident as a toddler, a near-drowning, he has required special therapy to recuperate. The Basque club has launched a campaign to raise funds for him and this Sunday they will hold a special celebration to raise money for his treatment. The club invites anyone who is able to contribute through its website.

The Government has published the recipients of 2013's aid for persons of extreme need in the Diaspora

The Euskaldunen Taldea club in Uruguay is one of the recipients of this year's aid (photoEuskalKultura.com) The Basque Government has published the Resolution to award this year’s financial aid “to Basque club’s to meet the needs of club member’s in situations of dire need in the Basque community abroad.” The call includes a budget of 202,000 Euros, the same as last year, and will be split among 57 applications in 20 Basque clubs in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Caracas Basques will remember Koldo Meabe, Maite Uzkanga de Sorozabal and Marilo Bilbao

Venezuelan hallacas in Bilbao (click to enlarge image) The mass that Eusko Etxea in Caracas organizes every first Sunday of the month at its clubhouse at El Paraiso will take place at 11am this coming Sunday, December 1st in memory of Koldo Meabe, Maite Uzkanga de Sorozabal and Marilo Bilbao, who passed away during the month of November in Chirgua, Euskadi and Caracas respectively. With Christmas coming the Basque-Venezuelan community in Bilbao will have the chance to enjoy traditional hallacas, made by Adriana and Mikel.

Talks by prof. Douglass on Migration and Diaspora at the University of Deusto and of the Basque Country

Poster publicizing Pedro Oiarzabal's and William Douglass's talks at Deusto University US professor William Douglass will give a talk on December 4th on “Basque migration in the Anglo-American world,” as part of a program organized by Deusto University (The Institute of Basque Studies, Leisure Studies, and DeustoForum) with the collaboration of the Provincial Government of Bizkaia. In addition, on December 5th he will participate in a seminar on Migration at the University of the Basque Country that will take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Remember that Douglass will arrive in the Basque Country in the next few days to be recognized by the Durango Book Fair and receive the Argizaiola prize.

The Settimana Basca in Rome returns to celebrate the Day of Euskera with film, music and literature

Promotional poster for Settimana Basca 2013 in Rome The Associazione Culturale Euskara and the Department of Basque Language at UPTER have organized another edition of Settimana Basca (Basque Week) with various days of activities to celebrate the Basque language and culture in the heart of the Italian capital. Events will begin on Tuesday December 3rd, on the International Day of Euskera, with the film Gartxot. Afterwards there will be other activities, talks on literature with Harkaitz Cano, the documentary Gazta zati bat and a concert by Joseba Tapia and Luis Fernandez.

The Etxepare Basque Institute will choose Basque language and culture lecturers in Argentina and Hungary

The text of the call for applications in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country At the heart of its efforts to introduce and spread the Basque culture abroad, the Etxepare Basque Institute has started the selection of Basque language and culture lecturers for the National University of La Plata (UNLP), in Argentina; and the Eotvos Lorand in Budapest (ELTE) and the University of Szeged, in Hungary. The people selected will be in place by March 14th in Argentina and by January 15th in Hungary. The deadline to apply is December 21 by email or at the Etxepare headquarters, among other avenues.

Young Basque-American Dancers -- Patxi Shortsleeve, Cirbie Lee and Mikel Sangroniz -- on Jaialdi 2015's website Even though there is still a lot of time until the next Jaialdi will take place in Boise in 2015, preparations have already begun so that everything will be perfect for this cultural festival that is held once every five years in the US. This is the main gathering for the Basque Diaspora and each year there are more representatives present of all the US Basque clubs, along with friends from the Diaspora and the Basque Country. The organizers have already announced the names of the groups from the Basque Country selected to participate in this edition.

Gure Ametza in Rio IV honors its elder members and names one of its rooms after Edurne Bilbao

Esther Ansorena, Josefina Bilbao, Elva Viano Zuza and Walter Patatxo Asnal founding members of the Gure Ametza club being honored at the ceremony held on November 13th (photoEE) At a ceremony EuskalKultura.com took part in, founding members of the Gure Ametza Basque club of Rio Cuarto (Argentina) were honored by the board of directors at an event that also included the christening of the clubhouse kitchen after Edurne Bilbao who as the club’s principal cook for many years; as well as a talk by Joseba Etxarri, director of EuskalKultura.com. Diplomas were also presented to the youngest members of the club for being “the seed of future generations that represent the Basque feeling.”

Presentation of the ENE Saria to the Union Vasca in 2012 (photoEI) As part of the International Day of Euskera, Eusko Ikaskuntza has opened nominations, for another year, for the ENE Saria that acknowledges work by entities in the Diaspora that work in favor of the Basque language. Nominations are open to everyone and should include a summary of the activities that makes the nominee worthy of the award. The deadline for nominations is next Monday, so if you have someone in mind, nominate them right away!
