A website allows you to consult online dictionaries between Basque and 35 other languages

Front page of hiztegitxoak.org that gathers translations between Basque and 35 other langauges Do you want to know how to say Basque words in Spanish, French or English, or vice versa? Do you want to give a friend from somewhere else the gift of a Basque vocabulary from his/her own language? The Hiztegitxoa.eu website allows you to do just that for free, as well as print basic vocabulary from Basque into any of 35 other languages or vice versa. On another note, Kike Amonarriz reports about another website where you can choose a word in English and a European map appears with its translation to each one of the European languages superimposed on the area the language is spoken.

Buenos Aires: “Topaketa” meeting on Monday at Euskaltzaleak who will receive the 2013 ENE award

Basque class last November at Euskaltzaleak (photoEuskalKultura.com) Argentina and the Southern America are in the middle of summer, but as far as Basque goes, there is no break for teachers and students. On the one hand, the summer barnetegi continues (will end this Friday, followed by a new course on Saturday and Sunday) in San Nicolas, in the province of Buenos Aires, with Basque students / teachers from Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina. After the weekend, a “topaketa” (gathering) will take place on Monday at Euskaltzaleak in Buenos Aires, even though this call will be special, since Euskaltzaleak will then receive 2013's ENE award presented to them on December 3rd by Eusko Ikaskuntza-Society of Basque Studies.

Tokyo’s Basque club is very satisfied with its 2013 activities, highlighting the reactivation of its website

Sho Hagio at one of the conferences organized by the Tokyoko Euskal Etxea-Tokyo Basque Club (photo TokyoEE) Basque culture is slowly making its mark on Japan’s capital thanks to the dedication of the Euskal Etxea of Tokyo (TEE). The club has carried out many activities throughout the year, and is very satisfied with how 2013 went, according to member Hagio Sho. One of the highlights of the year was the reactivation and renovation of its website that had been inactive since the Fukushima disaster. It has been back up and working since last October, and includes all the club’s news and activities.

The Zinemaldia in Barcelona launches a campaign in support of making a leap to the big screen

The Basque Film Festival in Barcelona, organized by the local Basque club, will jump to the big screen this year, showing films in Girona theaters in the capital city. It is a big risk by the club, who is encouraged by the great reception that previous film festivals have received. Everything is ready for this year’s edition that will take place from February 13-22nd. Nevertheless the Euskal Etxea has begun a support campaign to raise money to help finance this jump through the micro-patronage platform.

Juan Itcea and Raul Taretto are reelected president and vice-president of the Eusko Aterpea in Rodriguez

Re-elected club president Juan Agustin Itcea (left) with Mikel Ezkerro invited guest speaker in January 2013 at Eusko Aterpea´s clubhouse The Eusko Aterpea Basque club in General Rodriguez, Argentina, in the province of Buenos Aires, has published its new board of directors that will take office on March 31. These individuals will then run the meeting that will move elected directors into their specifics posts for a two-year term. Leading them are Juan Itcea and Raul Taretto who will once again serve as president and vice-president respectively.

Presentation today and this week of the book “Vascos en Buenos Aires” in the Basque Country

Cover of "Basques in Buenos Aires" The presentation of the book Vascos en Buenos Aires will be this afternoon in Bayonne, tomorrow, Wednesday in Donostia and Thursday the 23rd in Bilbao, published last month by the Administration of the Federal Capital of Argentina. Currently in the Basque Country for the occasion are, Claudio Ayruj, sub secretary of Human Rights and Cultural Pluralism of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, and Sara Pagola, the delegate of Euskadi in Argentina along with Asier Vallejo, Director of Basque Communities Abroad who will join them from Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Etxepare and Donostia 2016 open the call for three scholarships for artists in residence in Wroclaw, Poland

Writer Patxi Zubizarreta participated in an illustration workshop in June in Wroclaw as part of Wroclaw 2016 cultural days (photo Amaia Dones) Are you a creator of music, literature, performing arts, plastic and audiovisual arts and are looking for space, time and inspiration to unleash your creativity? The Etxepare Institute and Donostia 2015 are giving you the opportunity to do so with three scholarships for artists in residence in Wroclaw. The Polish city will share the European Capital 2016 with Donostia and these scholarships are part of collaborative projects and cultural exchanges put in place as part of these events. Residencies will take place in June and July of this year and include 2,000 Euros plus travel, residence and living expenses. The deadline to apply is February 28, 2014

Ainoa Irazusta: “I was very disappointed to see that no one knew about the Diaspora”

Ainoa Irazusta on the screen asking Lehendakari Urkullu a question on ETB Basque-Argentinean, Ainoa Irazusta, resident of Zarautz, who recently participated in the “Ask the Lehendakari” program asked Iñigo Urkullu if he thought that “The Diaspora plays an important role in the defense of Self Determination.” She says, that at the end of taping many asked her, “What did you say? The Dia what?” Ainoa, daughter of a very euskaltzale family from Bahia Blanca confesses that she was very disappointed when she realized that here “in the promised land” few knew about Basques in Argentina. “They don’t know that there is an entire country there immersed in Basque culture. They have no idea,” she laments.

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu has sent a Christmas message to the Diaspora where, after mentioning programs and projects like Gaztemundu and Global Training, he stresses his desire to “rescue that youthful spirit and those values” at the heart of the “Basque family in the world,” a united Basque community that aspires to the “knowledge and recognition of what we wish for Euskadi/the Basque Country,” he points out, before concluding with a Gabon Zoriontsuak eta Urte Berri On (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year).
