Activities related to the Basque language and recreation took place on Saturday afternoon. At the same time, at the Basque club, library meetings and a talk/debate on the current situation of the Basque Country took place. Unfortunately, the bad weather, that lingered over the three main days of the event, didn’t impede Saturday afternoon and evening activities that were held at the Municipal Amphitheater in Villa Maria kicked off by the Tamborrada.

The latest edition of Semana Nacional Vasca just ended, and as every year, the photos, feelings, and anecdotes rest deeply within all who attended. Thousands of images are kept in our mind’s eye, represented in different points of view, in the same color: that of the Basques in the Diaspora. Godella in Valencia was the scene of a memorable poetry recital where the poetry anthology Estellés euskaraz published by Bostezo was presented. The work, translates the verses of Valencian poet, Vicent Andres Estelles, into Basque and the presentation became “a festival of languages,” where Basque and Valencian shook hands. The Euskaltzaleok Basque club didn’t miss the event and two if its members, Gemma Sangines and Dabid Gonzalez, were in charge of reciting various poems in Basque. Gerardo Markuleta, who translated the anthology from Valencian Catalan into Basque, said that “the translation of Estelles was indispensable for Basque literature.”

We stared the first chronicles of the 2013 National Argentinean Basque Week, submitted by EuskalKultura.com from Villa Maria, on Friday. We continue today with more testimonies of the celebrations there. They concluded yesterday with a meal that was attended by 1,250 people from all over Argentina, as well as neighboring countries. The Basque language and culture lecturer at the University Ca’Foscari in Venice has organized a program of activities entitled, “Hiru,3,Tre” (Three, 3, three) that will take place this month. This week, University of the Basque Country Professor of Basque Literature, Jon Kortazar, will give two talks; the first on the image of Bilbao in Basque literature and the second on the relationship of the Basque novel and the civil war. On November 29, researcher and art professor Ilargi Olaiz Soto will talk about artistic production in the Basque Country.

The Association Euskal Echea Basque club in Comodoro Rivadavia, in the province of Chubut, Argentina, celebrated its first 90 years with a big party that was attended by nearly 300 guests among members and friends. Throughout the evening, those present shared dinner as well as dance performances and were witness to various tributes made to the its oldest members. As is customary, the club also hosted the dancers and the commission to traditional garlic soup some days afterwards.

The presentation of a Basque poetry anthology by the Paco Urondo Collective in Villa Maria, marked the beginning of the events that will congregate a large number of Argentinean and Diaspora Basques in this city in the province of Cordoba. A meeting of South American Basque Communities at 9am will begin the weekend program that will include exhibitions, talks, a FEVA meeting, choir and library meetings, games, dances, tamborradas and kalejiras among others. The Eskual Etxea in Paris is celebrating ten years in its headquarters of the Saint Ouen commune of the French capital city. To do so, it has organized a complete program of activities that will take place from the weekend of the 15th through the 23rd of this month. Events will begin next Friday, with the showing of the animated film Gartxot. Following, there will be workshops on Basque costumes and on Moroccan pastries, a concert by the group Berri Good, and the documentary Gazta Zati Bat, a bertso-afaria with Jon Maia and a photo exhibit by Igotz Ziarreta, the creator of the show’s poster, among other activities.

The Basque language and culture lecturer in the Hungarian city of Szeged will kick off “Baszk Kulturalis Napok” today, three days dedicated to Basque culture. The program unites music, dance, film and gastronomy; and will take place in Szeged, as well as in Budapest. Today, there will be an open workshop on Basque and Hungarian dancing, in Szeged; while there will be a “trikipoteo” a night of Basque culture in Budapest. On Saturday, the event will close with a screening of the documentary Gazta Zati Bat as well as a Basque music festival, also in Budapest.

The competition was a great success and included several dozen local participants as well as some from neighboring towns. As in all competition, there can only be one winner and this year that was Jeremias Martinez, from Crespo. The “Echeverria Memorial” Chess tournament is an initiative of the Urrundik Basque club in Parana. The competition is celebrating this year, its third anniversary. Present at the awards ceremony were tournament officials as wells as family members of the deceased, Jose Jorge Echeverria, who promised to guarantee the tournament’s future.
