Singing from farm to farm, visiting neighbors and friends and sharing the traditional songs of Santa Ageda is a tradition to many rural areas in the Basque Country that every year also takes place in Boise, Idaho. Holding sticks and hitting the ground with them marks the rhythm of the event that will come back to Boise next Monday to the Basque Block, with a second chance for kids on Thursday at the Boise'ko Ikastola. We heard about Basque festivals that took place in the clubs in Mountain Home and Caldwell Idaho. The latter, at the Euzkaldunak Caldwell Basque Charities, celebrated the 46th annual Basque Auction, Dinner and Dance with all proceeds to be donated to the local community. In Mountain Home, the Annual Basque Festival was attended by Basque teachers Maria Fernandez, Izaskun Kortazar and Itxaso Cayero, who taught traditional Basque songs to those in attendance and who succeeded at getting everyone to sing.

One born in the Basque Country who scaped to Argentina as a deserter and an exile at the age of 25, while the other was born in Argentina, the son of Basques who would later return to Euskadi where they would witness the bombing of Gernika, and who would eventually return to Argentina. They are two of the stories of Basque immigrants that are gathered online on the UNICEN website of the National University of the Center of the Province of Buenos Aires; two more testimonies from the Diaspora available online.

With the collaboration of the Basque weekly Argia the Azkue Foundation has launched a contest to choose the best blogs in Basque in hopes of supporting and disseminating the work of Basque bloggers. There are a total of 115 blogs registered and selected for the contest and now the public voting phase has begun. The deadline to vote is February 16th. Voting is open to anyone who wishes to participate and can be done through the contests website or via Twitter. Do you know who you want to vote for? Go for it!

The third intensive course that is part of the 2013-2016 Euskara Munduan Program took place January 18-25 at the Euzkal Etxea in San Nicolas Argentina, coordinated by HABE aimed at training Basque teachers in various American countries. The San Nicolas club that hosted the event for the second time welcomed representatives from clubs in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. At the end of the barnetegi, teachers who were trained in previous editions shared their experiences at the first teachers meeting. The dates for the winter barnetegi were also announced and will take place July 19-26 at a place to be decided, while the teachers’ meetings will take place annually in January.

Galician publisher Hugin e Munin recently published the Galician translation of Pasaia Blues by writer Harkaitz Cano. The author will be in Galicia next week to present his work in person. The first presentation will take place on February 5th in Santiago de Compostela, the second on February 6th, in Pontevedra and the third and final in Vigo on the 7th. With this, the book can now be read in four languages, Basque, Spanish, German and Galician.

The Tamborrada or Danborrada festivities are already behind us but images of celebrations in the Diaspora have come to us allowing us to relive those moments. In Mexico, as usual, the event gathered a large number of members who enjoyed a dinner waiting for a group of tamborreros to come at midnight playing the San Sebastian march. In Quebec, the Euskaldunak Basque club celebrated it for the first time and even appeared on ETB. We also received images of the events held in Caracas and Madrid.

The Gure Mendietakoak Basque club of Antioquia, Colombia ended 2013 by volunteering with a group of members visiting the rural area of Caldas and held various recreational activities for the children. The visit took place on December 20, so club activities included fun with the Olentzero and his legend. There were also games, stories puppets, crafts, songs and dances.
