HABE and NABO sign an agreement of collaboration to teach 2,000 hours of Basque classes in the US

Martin Goikoetxea, NABO's Euskara Chair and Joseba Erkizia HABE's director signing the agreement (photo HABE) HABE and the North American Basque Organizations (NABO) have signed an agreement of collaboration to teach Basque classes in the US and Canada. According to HABE, during this academic year there are 16 groups of students in as many basque clubs. In all, there are 205 students and 2,000 class hours will be taught. Additionally, HABE will be in charge of providing NABO all the necessary material to train teachers as well as to use in class.

Rome vibrated with Basque culture in an attractive Settimana Basca 2013 full of music, literature and film

The music of Joseba Tapia during "Tximela kapitainaren izarrak" (photoACE) The Settimana Basca (Basque Week) in Rome exceeded its goal of bringing a piece of Euskal Herria to the Italian capital, thanks to an attractive program that was full of unique moments of Basque-Italian cultural fusion: Harkaitz Cano presented his work Filo D’herba; Joseba Tapia put music to the poems of the captain gudari, Luis Rezola captured during the war of 36 by the Italians; a little frommaggio with Gazta zati bat next to the Coliseum and a tasting of Pintxos with narrations by Italo Calvino and Dario Fo.

“2013, an unbeatable year” for the Chacabuco Basque club that will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year

Dancers at this year's last  get-together (photoEE) In the words of its president, “we are very satisfied with this year,” he said on behalf of the Guillermo Larregui Basque club in Chacabuco in the Argentinean province of Buenos Aires. “The work and effort done since March until now has given much fruit and at the last event of the year, the community responded very well, filling the clubhouse hall.” According to Pablo Pavesa, “this gives us a lot of encouragement for the coming year; in 2014 the club will celebrate its quarter century and we are already thinking about, and planning at least two festivals to welcome all our friends,” he told EuskalKultura.com.

The Ayacucho Basque Club celebrated the end of the year with dinner, dance and a visit from Olentzero

Olentzero made a visit to the End of the Year Party in Ayacucho (photoEE) While working on building the clubhouse, the Euskal Odola Basque Club in Ayacucho held a large number of events at the locale that it is currently renting. Regarding the 2013 program of events, the last one was the end of year party that took place at the club’s main hall and was attended by a many members and friends. After making it over the mountains, Olentzero also made it to the clubhouse to toast the end of the year as well as the one that is about to begin. With his traditional txapela and his bag of coal the mythic Basque character was one of the main attractions of the night.

Conference on Basque politics with Israel Brull (photoCEVA/Gure Mendietakoak) The Basque community in the department of Antioquia, Colombia, continues to support the Basque culture through social and cultural activities. On December 11, two of its entities, the Gure Mendietakoak Basque club and the Center for Basque Studies in Antioquia organized a conference on the political and social situation in Euskal Herria in Medellin, by Israel Brull Kintana, member of Eusko Alkartasuna and a member of the Bildu coalition. We also received a chronicle of Euskal Jaia 2013 from Antioquia.

The La Plata Basque club, host of the 2014 Semana Vasca, said good-bye to another year with tributes

Photos from the Euzko Etxea's end of year party (photosEE) While preparing to host next year’s largest event in the Argentinean Basque Diaspora, Semana Vasca 2014, the Euzko Etxea in La Plata said farewell to the year with non-stop activities. With much cultural and sport activity the club close this new cycle bringing together the different “peñas” that function in the club. During the evening there were also dances, member recognition and the election of the club's mayor.

Blogetan a contest to find the best blogs in Basque Do you know of a blog in Basque that you’d like others to know about? Do you think this blog is worthy of an award? Don’t hesitate and nominate it for “Blogetan,” a contest organized by the Azkue Foundation with the collaboration of Argia magazine. The goal of the contest is to choose the best Basque language blogs in five categories: culture, society and politics, leisure, science and technology, and best new blog. In South American Basque clubs Euskera Day festivities often coincide with the end of the year celebration. Many clubs commemorate them December 3rd, while others do so throughout the month. “How?” There are many ways but mostly it is done by organizing games and activities in Basque. From La Plata to Santiago, let's check how students, professors and friends of the Basques celebrated on both sides of the Andes.

The campaign to help Joseba Andoni has gone from Miami to the Basque press in Euskal Herria

The Miami Euskal Etxea is happy that the word of its campaign is getting out Following the lead started by EuskalKultura.com, Deia newspaper has echoed the campaign of solidarity started by the Miami Basque club to help Joseba Andoni, an eight-year-old boy originally from Bakio who suffers from consequences of a near-drowning accident when he was a toddler. After years of treatment in Miami, Joseba Andoni now needs to undergo stem cell therapy that is very expensive and the Basque club, that has worked with the family in cultural activities, has dedicated itself to his case. Basque students in the Humanities do their student teaching in South America, at the Ikastola in Necochea

Student teachers from Mondragon University with a group of students from Necochea's Ikastola (photo Diario de Necochea) As part of the agreement signed by the Ikastola in Necochea and the University of Mondragon, three youth from the Basque Country recently concluded their student teaching at the aforementioned Argentinean Basque school. The experience was very enriching for the teachers as well as the participating schools that have committed to continue to work together. The Ikastola will conclude its primary level in 2013 and will begin offering the secondary level in 2014.
