A former sheepherder says he was forced to work in near slave-labor conditions for years, stranded in a remote Idaho outpost with no transportation and barely enough food. The sheep rancher, meanwhile, says his former employee was semi-retired and allowed to continue living and eating for free at the ranch, with a driver and access to the outside world just a phone call away.

Late on a Saturday night in San Sebastián, in Spanish Basque Country, crowds spilled out of the crammed, loud pintxos bars that hold such a prominent place in the city’s culinary scene, like Borda Berri and Atari Gastroteka, and into the cobblestone alleyways of the Parte Vieja, or Old Quarter. Just across the Urumea River, on a quiet street in the more residential Gros district, Topa Sukaldería, which opened in February, was about to sit its last customers for the evening.

Jean Urruty came to the United States in 1925, at a time when Basque immigrants were expected to work as sheepherders for at least four years before they could quit and go onto other professions. Sheepherding, aside from being a very lonely life, could also be dangerous. Ranchers and cowboys in the West, angry at sheep who competed for rangeland plants with cattle, would often confront sheepherders and kill sheep. At times, confrontations between sheepherders and cowboys led to death.
