The Itxaropen Basque club in Saladillo is 15 and receives a donation to continue work on the clubhouse

Itxaropen club members and friends sang Happy Birthday before blowing out the candles on the cake (photo EE) Two hundred people gathered at the Los Robles Room in Saladillo to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the local Basque club. When it was time to make a toast, they also toasted San Fermin and Argentina’s Independence Day. The dinner included dance performances, thanks to the Denak Bat dance group from Cañuelas, and music by Maral from Arrecifes. At midnight, Mayor Carlos Gorosito presented a contribution in the amount of $50,000 to the club towards work on the clubhouse.

Argentinean dancers from Necochea Gazte Alai begin their tour of the Basque Country in Banka

Friends in the Basque Country who have visited Necochea as part of the Hator Hona program, who have received the Gazte Alai dancers with open arms (photo HatorHona) Members of the Basque dance group, Gazte Alai, traveled from Necochea to thye Basque Country to begin their tour on Saturday with a performance in Banka (Lower Navarre). The tour sill then continue with several more performances in places like Irurtzun, Donostia, Tolosa, Pasaia, Bergara and Lemoa. The group is composed of twenty young dantzaris who are the Argentinean half of the Hator Hona exchange program, a project that has been successfully realized by the Necochea Basque club since 2004.

Mari Jose Olaziregi, Etxepare, “Internationalization and presence in university networks is the key to the future of the Basque language”

Students at this year's "Excellence in Basque Studies" (photo Etxepare) The third “Excellence in Basque Studies,” directed to train lecturers to teach Basque language and culture classes in foreign universities was very well received, with 160 participating. Mari Jose Olaziregi, Director of the promotion of Euskera at the Etxepare Basque Institute, was very satisfied with the course that “forces a rethinking of Basque culture within international academic standards.” Olaziregi assures that participation in university networks for study and research is key for the future of the Basque language, and that the lecturer program is making progress in this regard, despite the fact that three programs are being closed due to the current economic situation including programs in Stanford, Bahia Blanca and Iberoamericana in Mexico with only one new program opening in Cork, Ireland.

Biziklautak: Three friends and 40,000 kilometers from Bilbao to Bilbao, trip around the world on a bike

From left to right: Hodei, Javier and Goiznabar (photo Biziklautak.es) Goiznabar Monclus, Javier Escudero and Hodei Orueta are three young men from Bilbao that have formed the group “Biziklautak.” These students from the University of the Basque Country left on July 6 for a 40,000 kilometer trip that separate “Bilbao from Bilbao,” meaning a trip around the world. Armed with backpacks and the necessities to live for 18 months, they hope to share their experiences and the idea of entrepreneurship at all the universities that they visit. They will be broadcasting their trip on their website in three languages: Basque, Spanish and English.

A shot from Musiketxeak's promotional video Musiketxea, a network of four Basque cultural centers – Jimmy Jazz Gasteiz, Bermeoko Kafe Antzolia, Biarritzeko Atabal and Emankor Elkartea in Bilbao – has announced a contest for Basque music groups. Prizes for the four winning groups include concerts in each of the concert halls, recording an EP, a place to stay, a live recording and an opportunity to do five concerts outside of the Basque Country. The deadline is July 22.

NABO’s 2013 Convention and the 50 anniversary of the “Elko National Basque Festival” were successfully celebrated

San Francisco's klika in Saturday's parade just passed Elko's City Hall on the right (photo EuskalKultura.com) Everything went well in Elko last week, this year that the “Elko National Basque Festival,” reached its 50th year, and this northern Nevada town also hosted NABO’s 2013 convention. As a warm-up, a regional Basque club meeting was held on July 4th, with the NABO meeting being held on Friday the 5th followed by the festival kick-off with music, dance, parade, sport exhibitions, cooking demonstrations, tributes, pilota matches…all under the blazing sun, but with positive results according to the various sources consulted by EuskalKultura.com.

Evaluation of NABO’s Udaleku 2013 in Bakersfield by the instructors from Euskadi

Udaleku participants and instructors (photo Udaleku 2013) NABO Udaleku recently concluded in Bakersfield, California organized by NABO, the North American federation of Basque clubs and the local Kern County Basque Club. EuskalKultura.com asked the instructors who participated from different places in the Basque Country, to evaluate their experience. Udaleku 2013 was held in Bakersfield and hosted 102 children between the ages of 10-15 in this city that is 112 miles northwest of LA.

Great atmosphere and more than 700 people at the Basque event in New Caledonia in honor of Alban Cointat

One of the funnest moments of the festival was during "Pakito Txokolatero" when volunteers "surfed" down the line (photo AmicalPB) The “Amicale du Pays Basque Sonc” association in New Caledonia celebrated a Basque festival last Saturday filled with color and atmosphere, gathering a large number of friends in the fronton in the capital, Noumea. The festival remembered Alban Cointat, a very dear member of the community who died in 2011, with great emotion. In the afternoon, twelve groups of local singers paraded on stage, enlivening the festival that reached its peak with “Paquito Chocolatero.”
