Madrid’s Basque club will celebrate Basque Week on October 7-11

The entrance to Madrid's Euskal Etxea situated in the center of the city After celebrating a Basque Festival various times in the Retiro Park, this year the Euskal Etxea in Madrid has organized an entire week of activities that will take place from October 7-11 at the Basque club. The change is in response to economic issues, but also as part of the desire to value the clubhouse, in the middle of Madrid, and to honor the members who actively participate in the club’s activities throughout the year.

Tomorrow is the last day of the 2014 NABO calendar raffle: just send an email to enter

Tomorrow is the deadline. The day has come for the EuskalKultura.com raffle that will gift, and send to the home of five of its readers, or friends, a copy of the 2014 NABO wall calendar. To participate, all you have to do is send an email with the information of the person wishing to receive the prize. Tomorrow, Wednesday, is the deadline to enter at midnight. The drawing will take place on Thursday and the lucky winners will be published in Friday’s bulletin.

Chronicle of the Basque sheepherders trip back to California: “This is something that we will never forget”

The Euskal Artzainak at the SFBCC trinketa (photo Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan) Fifty years ago they went to the US to work as herders, and after many years of hard work, they returned to their homes leaving colleagues and friends behind. This year, nearly 50 of them were able to make their dream come true and return to California, accompanied by family members. The experience was very emotional and unforgettable, according to a member of the Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan Association Laura Igantzi, “They would say, ‘you don’t know what this means to us,’ crying, not just the herders but many Basques we met as well,” she remembers.

Harkaitz Cano will present a book of poems in Amsterdam, before departing for Argentina and Chile

Writer Harkaitz Cano at a reading in Poznan Poland The Dutch Publisher Zirimiri Press has published the book of poetry Norbait dabil sute-eskaileran by Basque writer Harkaitz Cano. The book will be presented tomorrow during the “Read my World” literature festival. The author will be there and will talk about his work, at the event that will bring poetry and music together thanks to the participation of violinist Maite Larburu. The book was translated by Luk Van Mensel and Henrike Olasolo, and was published in a bilingual edition in Basque and Dutch. After that the writer will depart to make other presentations in Argentina and Chile.

Kalakan will tour the US from September 26-October 14, from Boise to New York

Kalakan US Basque club tour Thierry Biscary, Xan Errotabehere and Jamixel Bereau, the three members of Kalakan will visit the US between September 26 and October 14 in a tour that will run a little more than two weeks starting in Boise, on September 27, and ending on October 13 at the Euzko Etxea Centennial Gala in New York, with other stops in Mountain Home and Boise, ID, Ontario, OR, Reno, NV, San Francisco, Bakersfield and Chino, CA and New York.

Californian Basques celebrated the wedding of Jacqueline Gaton and Christopher Gardina

The couple after the ceremony, at the time Jacqueline realizes that Gauden Bat dancers have formed an arch so they can pass under to leave the church Last weekend was especially happy and cheerful within the Basque community in Southern California with the celebration of the wedding of two of their young, Jacqueline Gaton and Christopher Gardina, well known and active members of the American Basque community. It was a nice ceremony and friends of the bride, in their Basque dancer costumes, surprised her at the end with the arches to walk under. Jacqueline's family is from the village of Ezterenzubi, and Christopher's from Aldude and Gamarte, all of them in Lower Navarre. The couple will travel next month to Morocco and Europe and reach the Basque Country, where they will participate in December in a month long Basque language barnetegi. Zorionak, congratulations!

Bordeaux’s Euskal Etxea provides a Basque Market and a walking tour of Basque imprints in the city

Last year the club celebrated Heritage Day in Bordeaux's Place du Palais (photo BordeleEE) This Saturday and Sunday the dock Quai Richelieu in Bordeaux will be filled with Basque festival atmosphere, thanks to activities organized by the Eskualdunen Biltzarra Basque club in conjunction with Heritage Day. Food, music and rural sports will be some of the highlights of the festival along with a walking tour of the city, for locals and visitors, to explore the strong Basque imprint in the city.

Basques in Viedma and Patagones celebrated Immigrant Day; the club is finishing up its clubhouse

City officials wlecomed  all to the Immigrant Day Festivities (photo RN24) As every year, the Basque club that includes Basques in the Argentinean cities of Viedma (Patagonia) and Carmen de Patagones (provinces of Buenos Aires) had a large presence in the Day of the Immigrant Day. The celebration took place at the Fioravanti Ruggeri Sports Complex where twenty communities gathered to introduce their culture and customs. Along with this news the Beti Aurrera Aberri Etxea also let us know that they are working hard to complete the remodeling of their clubhouse that they acquired in 2010. “I think we will be able to move in next year,” Sonia Gastaminza told EuskalKultura.com.

The family of German Bascologue Klaus Niebel donated his archive to the Basque Library in Frankfurt

Ingo Niebel, Klaus Niebel's son, at the Euskal Etxea in Berlin in 2012 (photo BerlinEE) The Basque Library at the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Goethe in Frankfurt has recently received an important donation of books, magazines, maps and cultural pieces from the Basque Country by the family of deceased bascologue, Klaus Niebel. The donation was made with the collaboration of the Etxepare Basque Institute in charge of promotion of the Basque language and culture outside of the borders of the Basque Country, according to Mikel Babiano, Basque language and culture lecturer at said university.

The raffle for 2014 NABO calendars ends next week: enter by sending us an email

There is still time to enter EuskalKultura’s raffle for five copies of the 2014 NABO calendar. Winners will receive a calendar with full color photos that the federation of Basque entities in the US puts together annually. In order to enter, all you have to do is send an email with your name, phone, and mailing address, and you’ll receive the prize if you get it. The deadline to enter is September 18 at midnight (Basque Country time).
