Under the auspices of HABE and FEVA the second intensive course of the Euskara Munduan program 2013-2016 to train future teachers of Euskara came to a close last Saturday. The week of work was intense but hasn’t scared students away as they already are considering their next meeting in January. As planned, Sara Pagola visited Zazpirak Bat to give a talk to club members. During her visit, the Basque Government Delegate for Argentina and Mercosur met and conversed with students and teachers in the Euskara Munduan program.

Californian Matthew Iribarne published an article entitled “Remember when __ used to be __? Matthew Iribarne reminisces about what once was in San Francisco" where he describes past places and personal stories of the city over the last few decades. Among different places, he mentions the old Basque hotel founded by Basque that although transformed, is still open today in the small and steep Romolo Street in North Beach.

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu will travel to the US this October which will be his first official visit outside of the European Union since he took office. Details are still being worked out however, Urkullu will visit New York, Washington DC and Milwaukee from October 8-13. In regards to the diaspora he will participate in the Eusko Etxea of New York’s Centennial celebration and will meet in Washington DC with Basque club and community representatives there.

A few weeks ago a new communication medium has appeared online, originating from the Basque Country with the aim to present the Basque reality to the world. It is called the Basque Tribune and has a different feature since it is published in English. Its promoters want to respond to the demand for international information on Euskal Herria directly, with their own version of things. We invite our readers to get to know this new medium.

St Ignatius day has arrived and with it festivals in a large number of Basque clubs and communities among which is Boise. The Basque festival in Boise, “San Inazio 2013,” will begin this afternoon with pintxos, and regional pilota matches Boise-San Francisco. The festivities run through Sunday and will include a dance with a reappearance of the veteran Boise group Ordago, a reference for current Basque American groups, who will enliven the dance along with Txantxangorriak.

The Sheraton Hotel in the Paraguayan capital will host a Festival of Basque Cuisine from July 25-August 3, thanks to Chef Iker Gonzalez Ayerbe, originally from Donostia and Executive Chef at the Hotel Maria Cristina, one of the icons of the city of Donostia for the second year in a row. The Basque chef will perform each night, providing a succulent pintxos bar and the best of the Basque culinary tradition with dishes like Marmitako, Porrusalda, Zurrukutuna, Codfish Pil-pil, Legatza Saltsan and fish soup, Txipirones Pelaio, Pantxineta, Intxaursaltsa…A luxury with today’s session being co-sponsored by the Asuncion Basque club who invites its members and friends to join in.

The Basque Studies Minor at Boise State University (BSU) in the Idaho’s state capital, works, and is working very well. According to numbers provided by the university to EuskalKultura.com, 611 students participated in the program during the last academic year 2012-2013. The program is interdisciplinary in nature and so works with 14 other departments on campus according to Nere Lete, director of the Basque Studies Minor.

The Basque dancers from the Necochea Basque club in Argentina are in the Basque Country thanks to the cultural exchange program Hator Hona. This initiative, supported by the club, has taken 60 Basque youth there to teach Basque culture over the last ten years. Now, the Argentineans return the visit. “Twenty of us have come after saving for years,” explained Marcial Agostini Zubillaga, member of Gazte Alai, to EuskalKultura.com.

The Euskal Etxea in Bordeaux celebrated its annual Festival of Music with a series of concerts and activities at the city’s Basque Plaza. The performances included the Bestalariak and Etxekoak choirs as well as concerts by groups like Alain Selva and the Iparralde Mizpirarrak. Also attending the festival were invited musicians: three from Bretaina and a djembe (African instrument) percussionist. “Basque songs were accompanied by the djembe and it was really something worth listening to,” according to club president David Mugica.
