Lehendakari Urkullu greets Gaztemundu 2013 program participants

Lehendakari Urkullu, his wife, Secretary General of Foreign Action, Marian Elorza and Director of Basque Communities Abroad, asier Vallejo greeting Gaztemundu participants (2013) Youth from the Basque Diaspora that are participating in this year’s Gaztemundu program were welcomed yesterday in Vitoria-Gasteiz by Basque president Iñigo Urkullu. The reception was attended byt the Secretary General of Foreign Action, Marian Elorza, and the Director for the Basque Community Abroad, Asier Vallejo. Iñigo Urkullu invited the youth to share in the challenge of building “an open Euskadi that will make its own place and become recognized in the global world.”

Nora Mugica: “A people who wants to conserve its language is a policy that deserves applause”

Linguist Nora Mugica Ph.D. in Humanities Nora Mugica was born to an Argentinean family whose childhood was marked by the sounds of Basque music and Euskera. In Colon, in the province of Buenos Aires, Idiazabal cheese and camomile arrived every year from the Basque Country. From Colon, letters left to stay in contact with the family in Goierri. Now a reference for the National University in Rosario, Dr. Mugica continues advocating for the union between Euskal Herria and Argentina and with this goal facilitated the Basque and culture course for the Zazpirak Bat Basque club at the College of Humanities and Arts. “It is very important to include Euskera in the University, not only because it will become a valued part of the collectivity of languages but also because it will now reach another profile of people.”

The Paris Euskal Etxea starts a new school year with Sebastian Daguerre as president and Maryse Lartigue as vice-president

Paris Euskal Etxea's board of directors (photo Elgar/ParisEE) Paris’s Basque club held elections for its board of directors, with which it will begin a new school year full of projects and activities like the celebration of the 10th anniversary of its move to its new locale in Saint Ouen that will take place in November. The new board, made of members from the various associations of the Paris Basque club, is led by President, Sebastian Daguerre, and Maryse Lartigue Vice-President.

Provisional program for the National Semana Vasca (Basque week) in Villa Maria Argentina November 8-10

Youth from Villa Maria's Basque club (photoEE) Just over two months left until Argentina’s this year's big Basque festival. Unlike other years, this edition’s voucher won’t include lodging and so each delegation will be in charge of its own. Festivities will begin the first week of November with the exhibition of Gernika’s Bombing anniversary and will continue through Friday 8th, when a Regional Conference of Basque Collectivities in South America will begin. Among invited artists, to date two groups have confirmed: Baietz and Maral.

Klika at Chino Basque club's picnic that will be held this year on Aug 31- Sept. 2 (photoEE) We are in the annual break that EuskalKultura.com takes in August during which the daily bulletin is not published. It's a time that we are taking advantage of to take care of outstanding paper, archival work and many other internal tasks, which given the current economical circumstances has been very entertaining for us. The bulletin will return on September 2.

2014 NABO calendar cover EuskalKultura.com is raffling five 2014 NABO wall calendars. Under the motto “Celebrate + Education = Perpetuate,” the entity comprised of Basque clubs in the US publishes a calendar every year with images and information from the Basque Country as well as the Diaspora. NABO was founded in 1973 in Reno, Nevada and is comprised of 41 Basque clubs/organizations throughout the country. The last date to enter the raffle is September 18 at midnight. Names of winners will be published on Friday the 20th.

Back to the Far West: 81 former sheepherders will travel in September from the Basque Country to visit the places where they worked

Historic photo of Fernando Goñi's dad, more than 50 years ago in the US (photoargazkai FGoñi/Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan) This time, this year 81 members of the Basque Country based Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan Association are making a dream come true. The majority worked as sheepherders years ago in the US and now, despite their advanced age, they have decided to revisit those places and show their children what life was like there. “Many wanted to return, but didn’t dare make the trip alone. But since everything is organized and they are traveling with friends they are happy to go accompanied by their spouses, and children…,” Laura Igantzi explained to EuskalKultura.com. They will leave on August 31 for California where they will visit Chino, Bakersfield, Fresno and San Francisco.

The call for grants for music festivals, performing and audiovisual arts is open until September 13th

Basque companies at the Sunny Side of the Doc fair in 2013 with the director of Etxepare Aizpea Goenaga (photo Etxepare) The Etxepare Basque Institute published the call for 2013 grants on July 26 for music, performing and audiovisual arts for participation in fairs, festivals or professional events. These grants are intended to cover expenses incurred by local Basque agents to attend fairs outside the Basque Country. Applications may be sent through the month of August and until September 13.

London will host performances in August by Gibelurdinek, Oinkari dantza taldea and Fermin Muguruza

Gibelurdinek (photo www.gibelurdinek.wordpress.com) The London Basque Society has made a call to participate in several activities as part of its Udako Jaiak (Summer Festivals) proposal. On August 3 the Basque group Gibelurdinek will give a concert at the Oxford House to present its new album. On August 7 the Oinkari Dantza Taldea will present “Ari Du” at the same location and on the 23rd Fermin Muguruza will visit London as part of his last world tour to give a concert.

The Basque confectioner “Los Vascos,” founded in 1919, receives the award for family succession in Bahia Blanca

Los Vascos Confectioner in Bahia Blanca, Argentina (photo Ravens Sociedad de Publicidad) This is the fourth edition of the Corporation Awards organized in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, by the Corporation of Commerce, Industry and Services. According to the La Nueva Provincia newspaper “the award for family succession could not have been bestowed to a better recipient. In this occasion it was given to the Los Vascos Confectioner, one of the most representative spots in Bahia Blanca. It is situated on Donado 196, the traditional spot founded in 1919 has a very rich family history from the hands that shaped it in the early days, Jose Moro Izaguirre and Valentina Lecuona,” says the note that we transcribe below.
