The Union Vasca in Bahia Blanca will provide a Basque film activity on Thursday with Carlos Gabilondo

Film event invitation Invited by the local Basque club, Professor Carlos Gabilondo will show a video on the history of Basque film, and give a lecture as well. The event will take place on July 25 at 18:00 at the Cooperativa Obrera Cultural Center, on Zelarrayan 560. Along with the invitation the club has also let us know about the successful completion of a training workshop for FEVA directors.

Graph reflecting EUSTAT's 2011 Census More than six out of every ten people residing in Euskadi has some knowledge of Euskera according to EUSTAT in its study “Census of Population and Housing 2011.” This work reflects that the number of Basque speakers has increased since 2006 to approximately 14,400 people, while the number of “quasi-Basque speakers” is still on the rise at 82,600. By territories, Gipuzkoa still has the largest number of Euskaldunak, followed by Bizkaia and Araba.

The Winter Barnetegi in Rosario has begun initiating the Basque Chair at the University

Classes began on Saturday morning and will run all week long (photo Valeria Oyarzabal) The Zazpirak Bat Basque club in Rosario, in the Argentinean province of Santa Fe, has carried out two very important activities, last Saturday, in regards to promotion and diffusion of the Basque language and culture. In the morning it inaugurated the Winter Barnetegi as part of HABE’s a Basque language internship with attendants from Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina, and in the afternoon it hosted the official presentation of the Basque Language and Culture Chair that will be housed at the University of Rosario. Authorities from FEVA attended both events.

Historian Selma Huxley, “Red Bay as a World Heritage Site is not only good for Canada but for Euskadi as well”

Selma Huxley with her son, fellow historian Michael Barkham in an archive photo (photo gipuzkoakomuseoak.net) The declaration of Canada’s Red Bay and its remains of Basque whalers as a World Heritage Site last June has made historian Selma Huxley, who discovered this archeological site in 1977, very happy. From here remains of sunken ships and certain well-preserved Basque fishing settlements have been key in reconstructing moments in Canada’s history. The locality, with only 200 inhabitants, has celebrated the appointment that will attract more tourists to a zone hit hard by the declining fishing industry. Huxley believes that both Canada and Euskadi will benefit.

Artists, Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum present “The Last Words” this Saturday in Buenos Aires

Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum The video The Last Words is based on the final allegation presented at the trial of Alfredo Astiz, captain of the Argentinean Navy during the last Argentinean dictatorship. “This exercise serves as an alert to the subtle ways in which certain political speeches try to justify a military regime, ignoring the violence and inherent non-democratic practices at the same time,” explain its creators, Basque Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum from Holland. The Last Words will be shown on Saturday at 19:00 at the Ricardo Rojas Cultural Center (Corrientes 2038) of Buenos Aires.

As part of the city’s centennial, the Jose C Paz Basque club welcomed Mayor Carlos Urquiaga

The Toki Eder club participating in the official acts commemorating the city's centennial It has been 100 years this July since Jose Vicente Altube, a Basque from from Oñati, baptized the city Jose Clemente Paz that currently hosts the Toki Eder Basque club. The Basque club played a significant role in the official acts commemorating the centennial and participated in a tribute in the main square as well as welcomed the local mayor, Carlos Urquiaga, along with other institutional officials, to the Basque club headquarters. On another note, Mariana Fernandez Castelli visited the club earlier this month and gave a talk on Basque geography.

Exciting Encierro at the Eusko Etxea in Caracas: The cows escaped and everyone had to run

Afterwards there wasn't much time for taking photos (photo CaracasEE) The Eusko Etxea in Caracas celebrated San Fermin on July 13, and as a tradition for the last several years, they also organized an encierro with cows. The excitement and the enjoyment of this Basque encierro always attracts a large number of the Basque community. This year the protagonists were “Malandrin” and “Brincona,” who in honor of their names jumped the barricades and took off running, making the audience run as well. The Basque club newsletter, Jazoera, published a chronicle of the festival that we provide below.

The Basque trivial game “Jakina!” is now available online free of charge

Includes eight different topics, with 4,800 questions that include options for public or private competition with other users. Do you want to try it out? South American Diaspora celebrated San Fermin on the beach, in the streets, in church and in their clubhouses

The Txupinazo (kick-off) at Mar del Plata's Navarran club (photoNE) Another edition of San Fermin has concluded in Pamplona and around the world. As every year, Basque and Navarran clubs throughout the Diaspora participated in the event following it from afar with various activities. In South America, the festival was celebrated on both sides of the Andes and after the festivities the clubs are evaluating their celebrations. EuskalKultura.com is taking another tour of San Fermin through Argentina and Chile.

Basque writer, Mariasun Landa, participates in a course on children’s literature in Santiago de Compostela

On the one hand, the “Ibero-American Children’s Literature and Xuvenis Ibericas,” with Basque writer Mariasun Landa present along with the Vice-Rector of Basque at the University of the Basque Country, Xabier Etxaniz; and on the other, a conference on “Immigration/Emigration and Identity and Children and Youth Literature in the XXI Century.” Participating in this congress were Xabier Etxaniz, Mikel Ayerbe (professor at the University of the Basque Country) and Mari Jose Olaziregi, Director of the Promotion of Euskera of the Etxepare Basque Institute.
