As every year, Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea has organized the “EH Sona!” a Basque music festival in the middle of the Catalan capital. As part of the event, a contest for singers and groups has been launched whose prize, this year, is to sing in a concert with Gatibu in the Razzmatazz Room. The deadline to submit auditions is September 8, and the winner will be announced on the 18th with the concert taking place on the 23rd. Are you game?

El Hoyo is located in Patagonia, Argentina, in the mountains, a few kilometers from the Chilean border. The town has six hundred inhabitants and its principal activity is cultivating artisan fruits. When Nuria Vilalta, a native from the Basque Country, settled there, she never imagined that she would become a Basque teacher in the town, but that is what happened. As she says, her arrival did not go unnoticed and soon after getting settled in, some who were interested in learning Basque approached her. The Euskera and culture get-togethers began in June. “I now have seven students but every week another curious person appears wanting to participate,” Nuria explained to EuskalKultura.com.

Agirre Lehendakaria Center (ALC) is an interdisciplinary studies center of social sciences, which was oficially presented last March. It undertakes research, innovation and the dissemination of knowledge in order to valorize and share – internationally – the strategic decisions and projects that have enabled Basque society to be recognized as a successful model of socio-economic transformation, and also to drive Sustainable Human Development. The University of the Basque Country, George Mason University (Washington) and Columbia University (NY) are part of the project. The Center will give a presentation tomorrow at Euzko Etxea.

Festival atmosphere already fills the air in Elko, Nevada since the Euzkaldunak Basque Club announced its 50th Basque Festival several weeks ago. A half-century of one of the best-known Basque celebrations in the US, thanks to the popular encierro (running of the bulls). This year there won’t be bulls but instead a number of activities like dance performances, jota and irrintzi contests, and the NABO Jr. mus tournament will make for a complete Basque atmosphere in the middle of the Nevada desert.

The Euskara Munduan program steadily continues its project of training Basque teachers to teach at the club level all over the world and has already announced the dates for its second face-to-face meeting of the 2013-2016 plan for Latin American students who began the process last January. The 2013 winter barnetegi will take place in Rosario, Argentina on July 20-27 and will bring together representatives of Basque clubs in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. All Euskera Munduan Barnetegis are supported by HABE in collaboration with FEVA and the host club.

For four years in a row, the Italian Basque club, Associazione Culturale Euskara (ACE), and the Department of Basque Language and Culture at the University UPTER have carried out the Euskanta project, an original way to familiarize Italian school children with poetry, musical creation and Basque. As in previous years, the result are songs, poems and very original, fun and sometimes surrealist drawings, that can be enjoyed on the project’s website.

Both the Mexico City and the General Las Heras, Argentina Basque club organized two events to honor the Basque tradition of Saint John. In Las Heras, there was a parade, they burned a witch, and danced Basque dances afterwards gathering for dinner. As a novelty, they played the danborrada of Donostia-San Sebastian and awarded prized to six Argentineans of Basque descent. On the other hand, in Mexico, they made dinner on a small bonfire, in order to be able to jump over it afterwards.

The Polish city of Wroclaw held a conference on Basque culture from June 20-23 as part of the preview to the European Cultural in 2016 that will be shared with Donostia. The program included a great variety of options: a fashion workshop based on Basque clothing, cooking classes, film and music among others. There was also an illustration workshop where writer Patxi Zubizarreta was a very special guest: they created illustrations for the Polish translation of his story Magalik badaki.
