Shortly before ending his term as FEVA President, Ricardo Basterra shared in the 14th anniversary celebration of the Urrundik Association of Parana with members and friends. At the same event, the Basque community gathered also celebrated another anniversary that of the radio program “Presencia Vasca” that has been broadcast for 24 seasons without interruption. Among guests, organizers highlighted Mikel Ezkerro, collaborator and honorary member of the Association. The lunch lasted into the evening with music, dance and drawing.

The Basque community in Cuba celebrated Aberri Eguna with a full weekend of activities, attended by more than 200 people. Organizers hope that this great response and support “confirms the dynamic recovery and capacity of the Basque-Cuban community, even though it still has major challenges and difficulties ahead, it also shows its vitality.” The main event took place on Sunday and was attended by folks from the neighboring province of Matanzas, a group of six members of the euskal etxea that was featured on Cuban television in its cultural section.

The Center of Cultural Studies and Basque Nationalism Arturo Campion, based in Laprida, Argentina celebrated its 11th anniversary with a day of work including holding the entity’s annual meeting. As part of the event there was a review of activities and guidelines were established. The event took place at the Lagunen Etxea club in Laprida, institution which shelters the Center. Throughout the day there were talks and a new “Guregandik” was also presented.

This year the Basque literature festival in Barcelona, Literaldia, will begin on the perfect day: Saint Jordi day. As every year, the Euskal Etxea in Barcelona has prepared an extensive program of activities in order to introduce new authors and literary proposals to both Basques in the city as well as the Catalans. On Saint Jordi, for example, it will bring Basque literature to the streets with authors Elena Moreno and Manu de Ordeñana signing books at the club’s booth.

As part of an undertaking that is being carried out by the city of Ayacucho, Argentina and the Euskal Odola Basque club they will construct two houses for large families that do not have housing. The project was confirmed at a press conference that took place at the clubhouse, attended by the Mayor Pablo Zubiaurre, and club president, Ignacio Etcheverry among others.

On April 9-12th the film Asier ETA biok was presented at the BAFICI, the Independent Film Festival of Buenos Aires with directors Amaia and Aitor Merino present. At the end of the event, the producers shared impressions and points of view with the audience, and according to Aitor, for the audience “it was very surprising that in an European country that is normally considered as a model, like the Spanish State, things like this could have happened.” After the festival, the Merinos visited the Euskaltzaleak association where they participated in an animated debate.

“Organized by Poles for Poles,” this is the secret of the Basque cultural festival in Poznan: los Dni Baskijskie or Basque Days, according to lecturer Amaia Dones. It is her language and culture students at the University Adam Mickiewicz who organized this festival that has for another year was very well attended. Dancing, talks, film, food, bertsolaritza…the cultural offerings were extensive and fun, as you can see in photos included here.

The Eusko Etxea in this coastal Chilean city has made a call that urges its members and friends, as well as members of the Basque community, as Basque citizens and Chileans everywhere to help those affected by the tragedy in Valparaiso. The Basque club is gathering goods at the clubhouse, as well as money in a club account, for those most affected.

Basque communities in the Diaspora are getting ready this week to celebrate one of the major festivities: Aberri Eguna or the Day of the Basque Homeland. It is one of the events that attracts the most people, as demonstrated by the large list of activities planned all over the world: from Paris to Mexico, via New York, Madrid, Miami, Vancouver, Havana, Sydney, Caracas and New Orleans among others.

To celebrate the Day of the Basque Homeland, the local Basque club in Coronel Moldes, Argentina has organized a film series April 23-25th. The event includes six Basque film classics and is being coordinated by Carlos Gabilondo. Marita Echave, club president and author of Basque Rural Cooking, included that pintxos will be served after the screening. Admission is free.
