It’s time for another edition of the “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” festival next May 11th

Shot from the Children's Parade in 2012 (photoBuenos Aires Celebrates) The “Buenos Aires Celebrates” is a tribute of the capital city to the communities that live there together, and takes place in one of its more significant spots, around the Plaza de Mayo. In regards to the Basques, who have been featured twice at this mega-event, they are now preparing the third edition on May 11th. Organized by the Laurak Bat Basque club, with the support of FEVA, the “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country 2014," gathers a large number of clubs and will provide a wide range of activities from music and dance to sports and gastronomy.

FEVA's newly elected board of directors (photoEuskalKultura.com) As expected, the current FEVA treasurer and president of the Arbol Bat Basque club in Junin became the new FEVA president. Also elected were Javier Ederra, secretary, and Pedro Mauregui Larranda treasurer. After the Assembly, and as part of the program of activities, Sara Pagola and Asier Vallejo met with FEVA and the Basque club representatives with Vallejo answering questions about grants, Gaztemundu and the program to recuperate historic memory.

The Basque Government opens the call for aid for persons in extreme need in the Diaspora

The resolution of April 16th that opens the call The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country published yesterday the call for support for Basque clubs to take care of members in situations of extreme need in the Basque community abroad. In accordance to priorities set by the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad, the budget is the same as last year or 202,000 Euros, with no cuts. The deadline to apply is May 24th.

The election only includes one list of candidates led by current treasurer, Hugo Andiazabal. After the vote, the club will welcome Basque Government representatives, Asier Vallejo, Director of Basque Communities Abroad and Sara Pagola, Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina and Mercosur.

Irudimena contest poster There is still time, if you want to participate in the “Irudimena” contest organized for the fourth year by Euskal Kultur Erakundea, the Basque Cultural Institute in Iparralde, and the Azkue Foundation. The goal is to encourage artistic creation among Basques, and so the contest offers a very original challenge: choose a sound and create something completely new from it. Are you up for it? You have until May 16th to submit your work.

Or yes, because “our Basque club also forms a part of Euskal Herria,” he says emphatically. Our interviewee is 47 years old and is a Basque from Caracas, president of the Basque club in the Venezuelan capital and a person steeped in Basque spirit that he wishes to pass on to his daughters, still small, not only with words but also by example.

Basque-Chilean entrepreneurs made a significant donation to Valparaiso to mitigate fire damage

Presentation of the donation by the Basque-Chilean Corporation for Development to Valparaiso's Mayor in the presence of the Delegate of Euskadi in Chile The Basque Chilean Corporation for Development, an association of entrepreneurs of Basque origin, made a substantial donation to Valparaiso, recently affected by the huge fire that left several dead and damaged the city extensively. The donation, 20 million Chilean pesos (nearly $35,000) was presented by the entity’s president, Luis Basauri, to the Mayor of Valparaiso, Jorge Castro, with Euskadi delegate, Rafael Kutz, present.

Olga Leiciaga, founding club member, “who has served as president for three terms did not seek reelection despite her outstanding work,’ according to club sources. Her work has been praised “it is worthy of everything in our veins and hearts that is the Basque Spirit,” they continued. She will be replaced by Julio Nestor Markiewicz with a team that also includes Olga Leiciaga as pro-treasurer.

From the Euskaltegi to the theater: now you can see online shorts made by Basque students at the Euskal Etxea in Madrid

"Sesame Street Champions" one this year's contest The Euskal Etxea in Madrid has published short films on its website that were part of the second edition of the Basque Short Film contest that was held for students of the Euskaltegi. The contest hoped to provide students a creative and practical way to use what was learned in class, which generated a lot of interest and commitment. The contest’s jury was comprised of actor Joxean Bengoetxea, producer Xabier Iriondo, and HABE technician Kinku Zinkunegi on the jury, who chose Sesamo auzoko txapeldunak (Sesame Street Champions) as the winner.
