The road will be long but the first step has been taken. After meeting with Mayor Ricardo Sastre, club president Andres Elorriaga, in the Argentinean Patagonia, presented a request to the city for the allotment of land, namely that is located opposite of the Euskadi Plaza. Etorritakoengatik also let us know that for another year, its dancers were part of the ceremony of the May Revolution. Basque club members also invite everyone interested to enjoy their Basque Festival “Madryn al Plato” in June as well as the Festival of Communities in September.

Last Saturday, the Berlin Euskal Etxea joined in the Summer Festival at a school in the German capital, organizing Txalaparta and Alboka workshops for the students. Girls and boys were encouraged to participate, ready to play and enjoy themselves with these ancestral instruments that were unknown to them. There were teachers who got them to play notes on the Alboka and students, parents and teachers alike, all tried the Txalaparta, fascinated by the possibility of making music on wooden planks.

Bakersfield is hot, but the sun didn’t get in the way of this weekend’s celebrations at the roomy clubhouse of the local Basque club – the Kern County Basque Club (KCBC) who hosted this year’s NABO Convention in conjunction with its own 70th anniversary. The Basque ambience was phenomenal all weekend. The ingredients: music, dance, pilota, presentations, Mus tournament and participants from all over the US and the Basque Country.

Less than a month after electing new directors, the Federation of Basque Entities in Argentina published the list of workshops that it will sponsor this year. In hopes of optimizing resources, other activities will take place parallel to the workshops, namely, dance, Basque music, leadership training, pelota and gastronomy. The first event will take place in Cañuelas this weekend so attendance needs to be confirmed by tomorrow, Tuesday the 27th. The next events will take place in Villa Maria and in September in Macachin.

Already immersed in their 2014 program of activities, the Gerora Association in Cordoba, Argentina invites everyone to their Txiki Eguna tomorrow in Alta Cordoba. This event is in addition to others that have taken place over the last few months to present Amerikanuak by Kepa Etchandy, photographer from Baiona, along with the celebration of the Anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika. Baietz attended both events, with music, and the Txotx Dancers! Gerora also let us know about their General Assembly and its elections.

They have called it the "Nokez Tour", joining the names Markez and Noka, and likewise, they will mix their rich repertoires of Basque modern and traditional songs in their concerts.The tour kick-off will be tomorrow in Bakersfield, at the Basque Fefstival of the Kern County Basque Club. Then, they will head of to other cities in California, Nevada, Idaho and Oregon. The tour will finish in June 7th in Ontario.

Born in Akorda, Bizkaia Amador Zabalbeascoa has been an American for some time. He has lived in California since 1970 when he immigrated to the US; and was naturalized during Clinton’s term. Today he is another one of the California ranchers, with American wife and children. He complains about the obstacles that ecologists create for ranchers that keep them from earning an honest living.

After last year’s edition that was held in Euskal Herria, a group of 9 youth from the Basque Country will travel across the Atlantic to participate in Argentina in the Hator Hona program, sponsored by the Euzko Etxea Basque club in Necochea, specifically by its dance group Zahar Alai. The Hator Hona 2014 program will take place from July 17-August 10th (TBC) and will included a large program of activities including classes and workshops taught by the visitors, as well as typical local festivities.

The Los Banos Basque club became a major meeting point last weekend for Basques and friends of Basque to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Even if organizers were afraid that attendance might be low, since the event just preceded the NABO convention in Bakersfield, their fears were quickly eased with nearly 1,200 attending Sunday’s picnic event alone at the Los Banos Fairgrounds. After her trip through Argentina, writer Toti Martinez de Lezea was “delighted” to have been able to get to know the Basque Diaspora in Argentina personally, “such a lively community, so impressive,” and full of action. Invited by the Delegation of Euskadi in Argentina, Martinez de Lezea not only presented at the Buenos Aires Book Fair but also had the chance to tour the Basque clubs and participate in the “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country,” Festival that gathered nearly 7,000 people in the heart of the capital.
