Delfina Uriarte celebrated in New Jersey her hundredth birthday complete with a card from Barack Obama

Delfina Uriarte was born in altamira, Busturia in 1914 and still looks great (photoDianaUgalde) She came to the United States in 1939 along with her husband, who is also from Busturia, Angel Uriarte, and together they raised a family first in Brooklyn, and then in Dover, New Jersey. This year, Delfina lives immersed in the great celebration of her 100 years of life that took place on March 13, 2014. On that day she received numerous calls from friends and relatives to wish her a happy birthday as well as a postcard form the White House signed by President Barack Obama and his wife.

The Basque language and culture program begins with the arrival of the new lecturer at UNLP

Dani Oiarbide new Basque Language and Culture Lecturer in La Plata (photoLaPlataEE) The Basque language and culture lecturer at the city of La Plata is carried out as part of the agreement signed by the Etxepare Basque Institute and the National University of La Plata. The project has been a success since its inception and gathers a large number of students who want to deepen their knowledge of the language and culture of Euskal Herria academically. Organized by language level, the majority of courses will begin in May with beginners starting in June, thanks to the new lecturer, Professor Daniel Oiarbide. During an interview with EuskalKultura.com, Oiarbide told us about his career, his plans for the Lecturer position and his first impressions.

Arantxa Anitua, Buenos Aires: “Many in Euskadi couldn’t imagine how deep we live Basqueness”

Since 2011 she has been the president of this euskal etxea founded in 1877, and oldest Basque club in the world.

In the pouring rain, Ikurriñas closed "Buenos Aires Celebrates" on Avenida de Mayo (photo P. Coronel) Even though the dates for the next edition of “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” have yet to be determined, with the city’s calendar being finalized at the end of the year, anyone having participated in the first three will surely be counting the days. For now, all that is left is the anticipation and some relief by reliving the moments of this year’s huge festival. EuskalKultura.com is making a contribution to the BAC 2014 album with its 3rd and last photo report and videos.

New York went “Txikiteo-ing:” more than one thousand people enjoyed Txakoli at Txikifest 2014

This participant won a Txikiteo glass among the numerous raffles that took place at the festival (photoTxikifest.com) For another year the Txakoli fest in New York, Txikifest, brought a little of Euskal Herria to the streets of Manhattan. The festival gathered more than 1,000 people in the street behind the Txikito Restaurant that was close to traffic and seemed more like a plaza in any Basque town during Txakoli Eguna, but with a more diverse crowd. The event, organized by Bilbao Chef, Eder Montero and his wife, recognized New York Chef, Alex Raij, is attracting more and more New Yorkers to this typical Basque tradition of Txikiteo.

Buenos Aires witnessed the deep Basque feeling displayed by the community at the BAC 2014 (II)

The little "harrijasotzaleak" also participated at the BAC 2014 (photoBACelebrates) Three days have passed since “Buenos Aires Celebrates” took place and people are still talking about what a wonderful time they had on Sunday. And they will continue to do so for weeks, now that the Basque community gathered in the city center and provided a wonderful cultural show to pay tribute to the past and present of Euskal Herria. Despite the weather, or maybe because of it, each participant completed his/her task with vigor, from the dantzaris to the musicians on stage, to the cooks in the booths or Basques athletes of all ages. This weekend Basque festival in Los Banos, California to celebrate its 50th anniversary

Los Banos Basque Club's 50th Anniversary poster The US Basque festival season begun this month and the next will be the Basque Festival at the Los Banos, California Basque club. This year’s Los Banos celebration is very special since it marks the 50th year of the club’s existence and its promotion of the Basque culture in this part of the American West. The festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, with events like concerts by Noka and Luhartz, a Mus tournament, rural sports competitions and Basque dance performances.

The New England Basque club celebrated its Txitxiburduntzi festival 2014

Members and friends also tried lifting weights (photoNEBC) Last Saturday the New England Basque Club, formerly known as the Rhode Island Basque Club, celebrated one of its main events, the Txitxiburduntzi festival. The event gathered one hundred members and friends from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, along with invited guests who came all the way from sunny Florida. The festival took place at Riki Lasa’s farm, a former Jai Alai player in West Suffield. The program of events included rural sports demonstrations like aizkolaris and harrijasotzailes. With huge club participation the Basques took over downtown Buenos Aires during the BAC (I)

During "Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country" Ikurriñas could be seen on Avenida de Mayo (photoVeronica Ezcurra) Organized by Laurak Bat in Buenos Aires, with the collaboration with a large number of clubs, institutions and Basque business from all over the country, “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country,” took place lasts Sunday. The event was sponsored by the city government and took place on Avenida de Mayo, from noon to 5pm. Despite the rain, hundreds of people went to the historic avenue to tour the booths, rides and to enjoy the shows. Rain could not ruin the party and Buenos Aires celebrated the Basque Country once again on the Ave. de Mayo

2014 Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country with a Tamborrada (photoEuskalKultura.com) “Even the climate is Basque,” was heard more than once during the “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country.” In fact, what began at noon as an authentic “xirimiri” turned into a down pour that forced the event to end a little earlier than expected. But that was all, because the Basque community in Argentina was not scared and faced the bad weather with music and dances with several excellent food options, and above all an unshakeable Basque feeling.
