The Euskadi Sounds Festival will choose six Basque bands to play this October in Madrid

The Euskadi Sounds Festival will choose six Basque bands to perform in Madrid This fall the Euskadi Sounds Festival, dedicated to Basque music and organized thanks to the collaboration of the Association of Halls in Madrid, La Noche en Vivo, the Association Emankor Sarea and the Etxepare Basque Institute, will take place in Madrid. The organizers have opened a selection process where they will choose 6 Basque bands that will perform there in October and November. The groups have to reside in the Basque Country and criteria include having a music career of at least three years, and at least one published CD. The deadline to apply is May 25th.

Txalaparta, American style, triumphs at the University of Idaho: mixes Guns N’ Roses and choreography

Band members playing the txalaparta in the video The University of Idaho’s Marching Band published this video that has left us astonished: band members along with music and engineering students have constructed a txalaparta that became the star of the band’s shows, completely American. The idea came from band director, Stephen Basterrechea who wanted to include something special from his roots in the show. “And that they did!”

Cyclists from the Urgozo group in Bilbao at the starting line with authorities and event organizers as well as club president, David Mugica (photoBordeauxEE) An irrintzi kicked off the bike-tourism race from Bordeaux-Bilbao 2014, leaving the spirit of this particular race organized by the Bordeaux Basque club very clear: mixing sport, culture and coexistence. Among the participants there are cycling fans from Bordeaux, Donostia and Bilbao, a special mix that will have the chance to continue strengthening ties today and tomorrow and on the last two legs that will take them first to Donostia and then to their goal, Bilbao.

The Union Vasca in Bahia Blanca celebrated Aberri Eguna with film, dance and a bilingual mass

Aberri Eguna mass in Bahia Blanca, Argentina (photoEE) The Union Vasca de Socorros Mutuos (formerly Laurak Bat) in Bahia Blanca also joined in the Aberri Eguna festivities and the commemorative activities of the 77th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika that took place in many Basque clubs around the world. In the case of this club, the events included a screening of the short Ambidextrous that also inaugurated the club’s annual film series, and mass that include song and prayer in Basque.

Amaia Larralde, from Lesaka, has been in El Salvador for 19 years (photoEuskalKultura.com) Nineteen years ago she left the Basque Country for El Salvador, where she lives completely integrated and excited with the progress and advances that she has witnessed as well as contributed her part. Her name is Amaia Larralde from Lesaka, Navarre, even though her heart also part of El Salvador. She says that to know people in El Salvador opened her eyes, whose intense blue colors shines even more since then.

Ongi Etorri, the young association in Ambares celebrated Euskal Eguna along with the Bordeaux Basque club

Basque Day at the Ongi Etorri Association in Ambares (photoBordeauxEE) The Ongi Etorri Association in Ambares, located north of Bordeaux, is small with 20 members, but in the last few years it has achieved a remarkable echo with its social and cultural activities. One of those was the Day of the Basques that took place on April 27th and that was attended by nearly 100 members of the Bordeaux Basque club. In all the event gathered nearly 200 people, among which was the Mayor of Ambares, Michel Heritié who greeted those in attendance in French and then in Basque having taken lessons at Ongi Etorri.

More Aberri Eguna in Basque clubs in Argentina, from Buenos Aires to the Andes

Aberri Eguna at the Mendiko Eusko Etxea Basque club in Bariloche (photoAgustin A. Sanchez) More institutions from around the world have joined in Aberri Eguna celebrations over the last few weeks. Basque clubs in Argentina were among them and commemorated the Day of the Basque Homeland with multiple activities. Today we gather more festivities held in the province of Buenos Aires to the Andes, passing through clubs in Bariloche, Euskaltzaleak and Lizarraenea in the Nation's capital city, Gral. Rodriguez, Jose C. Paz, Mar del Plata, Mendoza and Olavarria.

For another year, 11 in all, the Baztan community in Mexico outdid themselves on Baztango Eguna

The team that organized this year's Baztango Eguna who started their day at the ovens prepareing a succulent meal, toasting their success (photo MexicoEE) Nearly 200 people, the majority from Baztan, and other friends and relatives of this indisputably joyous group, gathered on May 1st at the Mexico City Basque club to celebrate Baztango Eguna. This makes eleven years for this festival that year after year fills the club with great atmosphere. The event provided attendees the opportunity to enjoy traditional dishes from this region, like “baztan-zopak,” made with care by the organizers of the festival who did their all so that the day would be a success.

Members of the new board of directors who will organized this year's Semana Nacional Vasca, November 2-9th (photoEE) Organizer of this year’s Semana Nacional Vasca Argentina to be held in November, Euzko Etxea in La Plata, held its annual assembly. Those gathered approved the Report and Evaluation for 2013 and elected some new officers for its board that will still be led by Javier Clua, with vice-president, Jorge Batiz; Maria Fernanda Astigarraga, secretary; Iñaki Azkarate, pro-secretary, Sergio Ochotorena, treasurer; and Patricia Pulido, pro-treasurer, among other charges.

La Oreja de Van Gogh will perform at “Buenos Aires Celebrates” and is giving away tickets to its shows in Argentina

La Oreja de VAn Gogh will visit Argentina and Mexico in 2014 Not much time is left before the 2014 “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” and while institutions are nervously counting down the hours, more news is emerging about what promises to be one of the biggest events of the year. On this note, the Delegation of Euskadi in Argentina-Mercosur confirmed yesterday that the group “La Oreja de Van Gogh” (Van Gogh’s Ear), a group based in Donostia, will also perform and two tickets are being raffled to attend concerts in each of the Argentinean cities included in their tour. To participate in the raffle all you have to do is answer the questions that follow. From Argentina, the group will then travel to Mexico.
