Tripling expectations, the Gure Esku Dago human chain united 150,000 people in the Basque Country and the Diaspora

New York's Basque community gathered under the Brooklyn Bridge (photoGariUdabe) Yesterday was an historic day in Euskal Herria, where 150,000 people held hands and filled the road between Durango and Pamplona to demand the right of the Basques to decide their future. Participation in the human chain tripled the expectations of its organizers and also had an important participation in the Diaspora, where many Basque clubs organized parallel activities. Concert of works by Basque-Mexican Manuel de Sumaya this Wednesday in Argentina’s capital

The annual classical music concert cycle at the College Euskal Echea in Buenos Aires began last month and will run through November. For the second function of 2014, the “La rosa purpura del Plata” emsemble will present, for the first time in Argentina, works by Manuel de Sumaya, Mexican composer of Basque origin. Specialists in Renaissance and Baroque, musicians will also give an introductory talk. The event will take place day after tomorrow and is free and open to the public.

Aitzol Lasa, mathematician from Navarre, wins a scholarship for writers in Nekatoenea

Aitzol Lasa, left, with organizers Aintzane Lasarte (IAEZI) and Pantxoa Etchegoin (EKE) It is a literature scholarship, but this time, even though it seems a bit strange; it is being awarded to a scientist. Aitzol Lasa, Navarrese mathematician, captivated the judges with is ambitious proposal: combine math and literature and bring them both closer to youth. Thanks to the scholarship, Lasa will be at Nekatonea for a month, a renovated farm house near Hendaia, where he will devote himself to this project. The stay will take place from October 2-November 2, 2014.

Argentinean Basque Club celebrates its 18th Anniversary and invites to watch World Cup at its clubhouse

Image from Toki Eder's 17th Anniversary celebration (photoEE) This Sunday, June 8th the Toki Eder Basque Club in Jose C. Paz, in the province of Buenos Aires, will celebrate its 18th Anniversary. Lunch will take place at the Altube Club and will include local Mayor Carlos Urquiaga among their invited guests. As part of the festivities, the community will participate in the Gure Esku Dago initiative and will film a video of the event. The Basque club has also informed us that the 2014 World Cup in Brazil can be seen at the clubhouse. The proceeds from the bar will go to help pay expenses for dantzaris to attend the National Basque Week this year in La Plata.

Prior signs of support for Gure Esku Dago in Buenos Aires at Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country (photoEuskalKultura.com) This Sunday, nearly 50,000 people will participate in a human chain from Durango to Iruña, in favor of the right to decide for the Basque people. The event is supported by the popular initiative Gure Esku Dago (In Our Hands) and many Basque clubs in the Diaspora are also joining in on the initiative. Tomorrow, Euskaltzaleak will make a human chain in Buenos Aires, and on Sunday there will be events in London, New York, San Francisco, Boise, Santiago, Chile, Montevideo, and Mexico…

The Basques in Pigüé share a newsletter to share the Basque culture in the city at their monthly dinners

Seen here Agustin and Analuz Having taken the first step, the Basque descendants in Pigüé, Argentins, have established their next and important goal: to get stronger as a group and move ahead with future activities. That is why, they are not only going forward with their monthly dinners but they also share their newsletter with information on Basque immigration to Pigüé and on the Basque culture. These dinners take place on the third Monday of every month and the next will be held on June 17th, when a classic Basque film will be shown.

The book “Becoming Basque” will be launched tomorrow in Boise by BSU's Basque Studies Center

Becoming Basque book cover The book "Becoming Basque" will be launched this Friday, in Boise, research on the multiethnic origin of the city, with a special focus on the Basques. Doctors John Bieter, John Ysursa, and Dave Lachiondo coordinated the volume. Basque-Californian group Noka and Mikel Markez from the Basque Country will sing at the presentation.

FEVA promotes a project for the creation of Pilota and Xare schools in Basque clubs

Image from the "Copa del Rio-Balda" that was played in Argentina last year The project emerged in the heart of pilota schools at the Zingirako Euskaldunak and Laurak Bat Basque clubs and hopes to stimulate the creation of small schools, specifically to teach Pilota and Xare in order to strengthen this sport while spreading the Basque culture via these disciplines. The project will be managed by the sports area of FEVA and is aimed at all Basque clubs in the country who would like to add these activities to their existing offerings for their members and communities.

Summer 'Barnetegia' 2014 this week in Boise to prepare future American Basque language teachers

Monday was the first day of classes to prepare future Basque language teachers, in Boise (ID). The goal of this course, organized by HABE (Basque Government), is to “train Basque-Americans to teach Basque language in their communities,” as Aitor Inarra stated. Inarra is one of NABO’s Euskara coordinators, along with Itxaso Cayero, with Martin Goicoechea serving as NABO Euskara chairman. The course will end this Sunday, June the 8th.

Busy weekend in San Francisco with the US National Mus Championships and Annual Picnic

This weekend's winners from left to right: Second place Tony Espinal and Cecilio Echamendi (San Francisco), Pierro Etcharren NABO Mus Chair, and 1st place team Tony and Darren Uranga (Homedale, ID) Last weekend was exciting in the San Francisco area. On Saturday the US National Mus Tournament was held in San Rafael, thanks to NABO and the Marin-Sonoma Basque Association. On Sunday, members and friends of the San Francisco Basque club gathered to celebrate its annual picnic at the Petaluma Fairgrounds. The weather cooperated and the people too. Zorionak!
