Two Basque filmmakers from Iparralde, Iban Ruisiñol and Nicolas Novion are finalizing a documentary project on the most broadcast news in 2012 in the world of Basque culture: Kalakan’s tour with Madonna. The directors wondered about the possibility of recording a week of rehearsals for the tour, but during the process, the documentary transformed into something else: a reflection on Basque culture, globalization, on tradition and modernity, with the participation of artists like Berri Txarrak, dantzari Jon Maya and director Asier Altuna. The project is now looking for the last funding boost with a crowdfunding campaign.

One hundred members and friends gathered at the Euskal Sustraiak Basque club in Trenque Lauquen, in the Argentinean Province of Buenos Aires to celebrate another club birthday. Attendees not only enjoyed a BBQ but also dance and musical performances. The Basque club is now looking forward to upcoming activities that are not few: in June, San Juan bonfire; in September, visit by Magdalena Mignaburu, and in October Ham Festival that will celebrate its sixth edition this year.

The date of the conference is Friday, June 6th even if the Director of Social Economy of the Basque Government, Maria Ubarretxena and the President of the Confederation of Cooperatives in Euskadi-Konfekoop, Javier Goienetxea will begin their activities tomorrow Tuesday, June 3rd by participating in a roundtable in Buenos Aires, continuing tomorrow with the seminar “The Basque Cooperative Experience,” that will take place in La Plata. Finally, the Euskadi representatives will travel to Santa Fe on June 6th where they will speak at the 1st Local Conference on Cooperatives.

Madrid will have a Basque touch this June, thanks to a series of Basque cultural activities organized by the Etxepare Basque Institute. In the first place, as part of the Madrid Book Fair, this Wednesday, June 45h, there will be a roundtable on translating Basque literature with Josu Zabaleta, Karlos Cid, Karmele Jaio and Rikardo Arregi. Following this, on June 9th at the Reader’s House in Matadero, Madrid, Bertsolaritza will be the focus with the participation of Xabier Paya and Asier Altuna. To finish up, on June 9-10th, the film Bertsolari (Asier Altuna 2001) will be shown at the Cineteca in Matadero, Madrid, with its director also in attendance who will give a talk to those attending.

On April 2, 2013 the city of La Plata suffered a violent storm and as a result, the most serious flooding in its history. The results were also tragic with more than 60 dead and countless property losses. “As soon as we heard the news, Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu contacted us to express his condolences and to offer the solidarity of the Basque people,” club sources told EuskalKultura.com. “Now, we have finished the administrative processes so that five members will receive a subsidy to help with work on the infrastructure of their homes.”

The celebration of an event in honor of their own members is an established tradition on the calendar of Basques in Pehuajó, in the Argentinean province of Buenos Aires. This year, they have been planning the fourth edition of the even that will take place in just a few days in June. As every year, along with lunch there will be images of the Basque Country projected to bring the land of their ancestors closer. Maria Elida Oroz, secretary on the club’s new board of directors, also announces that Basque classes will resume in June.

A Cultural Weekend (Cap) has been planned for June 6-8 at the Euskal Etxea Artea in Mallorca that just doesn’t stop. On May 24-25, the Basque club gathered a group of Basque students and friends to live in a Barnetegi that was very well received. For the Asteburu Kulturala (Cultural Weekend), they have announced an interesting line up of concerts: Dangiliske, Urko, Gorka and Natxo Knorr, Monkey Doh and Talamh... and best of all its free!

John and Grace Mainvil are true examples of the Basque-Californian reality, as others were before. They were born 88 and 80 years ago, respectively, into the world of ranches and the Far West that would eventually become freeways, homes and the cement that is now part of the greater Los Angeles metropolis. Their story tells us about the Basque rancher’s environment the Basque language was also a part of, along with Basque ways, “that California has always enjoyed during different historical phases Spanish, Mexican and US.”

Amagoia Guezuraga, from Zamudio, Bizkaia is an expert in genealogy, her love and her passion. Little by little she has gathered information on families in her town and is currently following the tracks of those who have gone abroad, especially those who have gone to America. The results of her research have been published in the local magazine “Orain.” Amagoia has very clear advice for those who would like to begin to research their family’s roots: “Start asking those at home.” And if by chance your last name is Aurrekoetxea, Zamudio, Orbea, Aldana, Larragoiti or Cadalso, get in touch with her because your ancestors may have come from Zamudio and Amagoia may have the key to your family tree.

As every year, on May 25th another anniversary of the Argentinean Revolución de Mayo 1810 was celebrated along with the Basque community who had noted presence at the festivities that took place in towns and cities throughout the country. Invited by local authorities Basque club representatives added the Ikurriña to the set of flags that flew along with the Argentina's Albiceleste flag. On the stage, in the streets, in parades and festival booths, the Day of the Argentinean Homeland was celebrated in different ways last Sunday, as well as at the heart of the Basque community.
