Rosario celebrated the Anniversary of Gernika and Aberri Eguna with two events in the Plaza Gernika

Rosario's dantzari txikiak performing at Aberri Eguna (photoEE) During 2014 the Zazpirak Bat Basque club in Rosario will once again be the site for a large number of cultural and sporting activities in hopes of spreading the culture of Euskal Herria and promote an area of broad participation. With daily activities en route, the institution will also celebrate special dates on the Basque calendar, including the 77th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika and Aberri Eguna that took place on the Plaza Gernika in Rosario with the laying of a wreath and celebration of mass.

Call for applications for Gaztemundu 2014, Basque dance program to be held in July in Donostia

Caption of the Basque Government Bulletin announcing the call for aplications The Basque Government has called on dancers and people in charge of dance groups outside of the Basque Country to participate in the 2014 edition of Gaztemundu, that will take place July 5th through 20th in Donostia-San Sebastián. There is no maximum age limit, and anyone who meets the requirements and has not participated since 2003 is welcome to take part in the program. The deadline for submissions of applications is June 3.

Toti Martinez de Lezea will end her visit to Argentina at the “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country”

Writer Toti Martinez de Lezea As part of her brief trip charged with activities, writer Toti Martinez de Leza will visit Argentina in hopes of spreading her work on a larger scale. One of her commitments will be the Buenos Aires Book Fair, where her books will be for sale. Nevertheless, and according to her, “The main reason for my trip is to speak with Basques in Argentina and tell them about our land.” Martinez de Lezea will give talks in Basque clubs and will also attend the “Buenos Aires Celebrates,” on Sunday May 11th.

EuskalKultura.com will be at Basque festivals in Los Banos, Bakersfield and San Francisco this month

Logo of the 2014 NABO Convention and 70th anniversary festival of the Kern County Basque Club in Bakersfield, California, design by local artist and designer Pierre Ygoa Joseba Etxarri, director of EuskalKultura.com will travel to California in mid-May to attend the NABO Convention that will take place on May 23rd in Bakersfield, with the Kern County Basque Club hosting. Etxarri will also be in Los Banos for that club’s 50th anniversary celebration where he will give a talk on Basques in California. His trip will conclude in San Francisco where he will attend the San Francisco Basque Club’s annual picnic.

As part of its 25th anniversary, the Basque club in Chacabuco invites to its first-ever Dancers’ Get-Together

Guillermo Larregui Basque club dancers (photoEE) As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, the Guillermo Larregui Basque club in Chacabuco, Argentina will gather Basque clubs in the area with its first Regional Dancers’ Get-Together. The event will take place on August 9th and will include an outdoor dance at the clubhouse. Lodging for the dantzaris will be in a place donated by the city so dancers will only be responsible for their travel expenses and meals. The Basque club is also expecting the Navarrese Club dancers in Buenos Aires to participate.

Invited by the Friends of the Basques, Kepa Etchandy presented his book “Amerikanuak” in Chacabuco

Kepa Etchandy and Roberto Landaburu at the Chacabuco Culture Center (photoPeña) As part of his visit to Argentina, the photographer from Baiona, Kepa Etchandy, presented his book Amerikanuak in the city of Chacabuco during the 2014 Cultural Cycle carried out by the local Friends of Basques Association. During his stay, Etchandy met with his friends of Mundu Vasco Magazine, who regaled him with a typical BBQ. During the next few days, Etchandy will present his work in various Basque institutions as well as at the Buenos Aires Book Fair.

Olga Rosa Leiciaga Elordi , center, awarding prizes for the "Amazing Stories" contest Olga Leiciaga lives in Corpus Christi, a small town in northern Argentina, not far from the Iguazu Falls and the San Ignacio Jesuit missions that the province is named for, Misiones. A descendant of Basques who came to Argentina in the 19th century, Olga Rosa Leiciaga Elordi is a retired teacher, founder of a couple of Basque clubs who does solidarity work in the indigenous communities.

Txakoli invades Manhattan this Sunday with another edition of “Txikifest”

Colorful txapelas on the 2014 Txikifest poster The fourth edition of “Txikifest,” the Txakoli Festival in New York, returns this Sunday to the Chelsea neighborhood, to soothe the dry throats of the increasingly numerous fans of this Basque wine. This festival is organized by the NY Basque restaurant Txikito, and Chef from Bilbao, Eder Montero. It has become one of the most fun events in the city in its short life. This year Basque wine companies and a dozen New York restaurants will participate with proceeds being donated to the Edible Schoolyard NYC organization.

Joseba Gotzon's Argentinean tour: today he will sing in Rosario and then in Santa Fe, San Nicolas and Parana

Tour poster After singing this weekend at the Zazpirak Bat Basque club in Rosario, the mini-tour that just began for Joseba Gotzon, accompanied by Galician singer Xoan Curiel. Today, Wednesday, he will again perform in Rosario but this time at the city’s Galician Center. His tour will continue throughout the week in Santa Fe, San Nicolas de los Arroyos and Parana.

The Aberri Eguna celebrations in Venezuela were presided over by both the Basque and Venezuelan flags

Raising of the flags in tribute at the Caracas Basque club (photos Jazoera) We are still hearing about Aberri Eguna celebrations around the world that we are collecting little by little, as there are so many. Venezuela is surely the country in the Diaspora that commemorates the day the most solemnity. It is a tradition for the three Basque clubs, Caracas, Valencia and Puerto La Cruz to begin the day with Basque mass, followed by the raising of the Basque Venezuelan flags while playing their respective anthems, a floral wreath, pilota matches and a meal. That is how the first two clubs celebrated this year while Puerto La Cruz celebrated in various private homes.
