From Santiago, Chile, genealogy expert, Patricio Legarraga, has created a bridge between Basques in Iparralde and those in Chile of Basque descent, through his website: www.emigrationchili.com.  That is where a large portion of the information that he has gathered over the last few years resides, and where users can find information on 2,000 Basque emigrants from Iparralde who came to Chile starting in 1840.

Carson City Nevada’s International Film Weekend to show Basque movie ‘Obaba’ and serve ‘pintxos,’ all for free

From Thursday to Saturday, February 5-7, Carson City, Nevada will be home to the second annual International Film Weekend. After last year’s successful first edition, organizers prepared a lineup that will “celebrate cultural diversity through films,” in the words of Linda Bellegray, member of the organization, to EuskalKultura.com. ‘Obaba,’ directed by Navarrese filmmaker Montxo Armendariz, will be shown the last day.

If the Tamborrada has a lot of followers in the Diaspora, in Necochea, Argentina, it is lived with a true passion.  That is what it is in the Basque club in Necochea where they once again dedicated an entire week to the celebration, the children and adults as well put on drums and launched into the marches of Sarriegi.  What’s more, in the middle of summer!  We leave you with some photos taken by the Basque club.

“Makila,” a Basque dance show “Made in Paris” will debut tomorrow in the French capital

“Makila” is a show supported by two associations in the Euskal Etxea in Paris (Gazteria and Gernika), that gathers dantzaris, singers and Basque musicians to create a Basque cultural offering “made in Paris.” It will be presented tomorrow afternoon in the Armand Bejart de Asnieres Sur Seine Theater and will gather 60 people on stage.  As a teaser, we leave you with a video presentation that has posted to social media.

Everything is ready in Barcelona to start the Basque film festival, Zinemaldia.cat, organized by the Euskal Etxea.  It will begin on February 6 with an inaugural gala in the Girona theaters.  This year there will be some novelties with prizes awarded “Txapela D’Or” with a cash prize, in three categories: best fiction, best documentary and best movie in Basque.  There will also be a parallel activity dedicated to children – Txo! – a marathon of films by Julio Medem, a meeting point for professionals in A/V of the Basque Country and Catalonia and much more.

Alberto de Sarasqueta, Mondragon Park in Kunshan: “In China the container is worth as much or more than the contents”

Alberto de Sarasqueta, from Bilbao, has been living in China for seven years where he coordinates the Mondragon Industrial Park in Kunshan, near Shanghai, inaugurated in 2007 to house Basque companies.  They are one thousand workers, around forty of them expatriates, many young Basque professionals. He acts as a bridge between both Chinese and Western worlds.

The Eskual Etxea in Paris is impatient and eager to kick off Korrika 19, and they have everythign ready to join in on this race in favor of Euskera, with a festive route through the streets of Paris.  It will take place on March 7, leaving from Montmatre, to the Euskal Etxea in Saint Ouen.  To get your mouth watering, here is a video that features some of the spots along the way.  Whose ready to sign up?

We are still receiving reports and photos of Tamborrada celebrations that have taken place again this year throughout the Diaspora.  The passion for this celebration is catching on and those who have celebrated it once, playing the March of San Sebastian with drum and sticks, in the best case, or on any other surface in the absence of other means, can’t wait to do it again.  We leave you with a photo chronicle of the festivities in Sydney, Mexico, Lima and Caracas.

With a degree in geography, Roger Sallas is a youth that has always been preoccupied by the world of culture and associations, revitalizing the neighborhood in his native Badalona.  Since April 2014, he is the force behind the Basque showcase in Catalonia which is Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea.

The Euskaldunen Taldea in Salto who hosted the Summer 2015 Barnetegi

During the third week in January, Uruguay was once again the site for HABE’s Euskara Munduan program, with the participation of students from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.  This begins a special year for the Euskaltzales in South America who will celebrate in 2015 the first quarter-century of the program that trains Basque teachers, under the motto: “Argentinan Euskaraz 25.”
