The first Basque Handball and Xare School opens in Concordia as part of a program promoted by FEVA

Inauguration of the Basque Pelota School in Concordia.

The event was attended by coachs Pablo Ubierna, from the Laurak Bat Basque Club in Buenos Aires, and Sebastian Errecart from the Zingirako Euskaldunak Basque club in Chascomus, as supervisors.  The school is located in in the trinquete of the Progreso Club with Patxi Etchevers Rosas, Vice-President of the Basque Club of Concordia, as local person in charge.

Former president of the French Basque Club in Buenos Aires, Michel Iriart, passed away yesterday

Michel Iriart passed away yesterday in Buenos Aires where he was member since the age of three of the French Basque Club or Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea, as it is called latelly. He served on the board of the institution, was a former president of the Club and since 2008 an honorary member.  He was a member of the club’s “old guard” of the CVF.  Iriart was born in Buenos Aires in 1920 and would have been 95 next February.

There isn’t a Basque club in Houston, but Basques from Euskadi, living there, get together at times

Houston, Texas is the fourth largest city in the US.  Iñigo Iraola, from Hernani, is a telecommunications engineer there and is part of the legion of people form other parts of the states, or world, who have moved to the city to study or work, including a few Basques.  “I know that there are fifteen in my area who have come like me, to study or work and sometimes we get together to go out, or just visit,” he says.

Conference and presentation of a book about Martin Elorza, Bishop of Moyobamba, in Lima

Last week two books related to the Basque Country were presented in Lima, with professors and members of the University of the Basque Country, Deusto University and the University of Navarre present.  The first was on Ezkioga and the other was on Monsignor Martin Elorza, Bishop of Moyobamba, according to a note sent by the organizers.  They are also announcing the presentation of another book, in March, by Josu Legarreta, on Basque-Peruvian, Francisco Igartua.

A film festival begins today at the Uruguay Cinematech in Montevideo to offer a Basque look at the world

Event program

We have received the program of the “Montevideo Basque Film Festival,” entitled “A Basque Look at the World” that begins this afternoon in Montevideo at the Uruguay Cinemateca (Cinematech), thanks to the Aldaxka Basque cultural group.  The documentary Amerikanuak by Nacho Reig (2010) will kick off the festival and present the reality of Basque emigration to Elko, NV, in the United States. The festival will run through next Sunday December 14.

The Euskara Munduan Program in South America: Summer Barnetegi 2015 will be in Uruguay on January 17-24

Students and professors who participated at the 2014 Winter Barnetegi in Chascomus along with their hosts from the Zingirako Euskaldunak Basque club in front of the clubhouse

The intensive training course for Basque professors supported by HABE in South America will take place in Salto, Uruguay organized in conjunction with the local Basque club, the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea and FEVA.  The event will begin on January 17, 2015 and will gather teachers in training from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.

The Durangoko Azoka 2014 begins showcasing the latest cultural developments in the Basque Country and the Diaspora

As in previous year, books from the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno will be at the Azoka

Today at 9:30 the 49th edition of the Durango Book and Record Fair, the Durangoko Azoka opens its doors.  Today is especially dedicated to school students but the fair is fully open to the public.  As in prior years, stands in the Landako pavilion become the showcase of the latest in Basque publishing and music.  Following is a small summary of the titles relation to the Diaspora that will be available in the Fair.

Argentine personalities showed yesterday in Buenos Aires their support for the Peace Process in Euskadi

The Senate of the Nation was the site yesterday afternoon in Argentina for the “Chapter Argentina Conference for Peace in the Basque Country.”  With a turnout that filled the room to its capacity, the event was led by Alberto Spektorowski, member of the International Contact Group (GIC), Paul Rios coordinator of Lokarri, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Nobel Peace Prize, and Nora Cortiñas president of the Mothers of the May Plaza founding line, the latter two responsible for the reading of the manifesto of support.

Delegate of Euskadi Sara Pagola visited eight Basque clubs on Argentina and Uruguay to finish out 2014

On her last tour of the year, Sara Pagola, delegate of Euskadi in Argentina and Mercosur has visited clubs in Concepcion del Uruguay and Concordia, in the Province of Entre Rios, Argentina; and some other in Uruguay, meeting in this case with the Basque communities and euskal etxeas of Salto, Trinidad, Carmelo, San Jose, Juan Lacaze and Rosario.

Eusko Alkartasuna in Sao Paulo celebrated its 55th paying tribute to its founders Elias Echegoyen and Carmen Lizarzaburu

Members of the Eusko Alkartasuna Basque club in Sao Paulo celebrated their 55 years in style on November 30.  The celebration gathered members and friends at the clubhouse where there was a special tribute to Elias Echegoyen and Carmen Lizarzaburu, members of the original group of founders.  The club has shared photos of the event with us that we provide here.
