The eleventh EHMG International Seminar on Basque History and Diaspora will take place in Cuba January 12-14

Old Havana, in the heart of the historic district of the Cuban capital, will be the site of the Eleventh International Conference of Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi, dedicated this time to Basques in Cuba.  The event is being co-organized by the Center for Basque Studies of the University of Nevada, Reno and the Basque Government in cooperation with the Basque-Navarran Charitable Association Basque club in Havana, among others.

The Canadian city of Red Bay, in Labrador, will celebrate its third Jaialdi Basque Festival on July 7-9, 2015

Red Bay supports research, knowledge dissemination and its touristic exploitation of its Rich Basque past.  The Basques were an expeditionary pioneering nation in Europe, accessing and engaging in commerce and industry on the North American East Coast.

Red Bay, Canada will celebrate its “III Jaialdi Red Bay Basque Festival” on July 7-9, 2015 including a conference on its inhabitants in the 16th and 17th centuries.  As the most important Basque whaling station at that time, which will be  recreated for visitors to also include fishermen’s way of life coming from Biarritz, Baiona, Donibane Lohizune, Pasaia, Donostia, Orio or Bermeo nearly 500 years ago.  There will be Basque gastronomic exhibits and the city will be brightened with Basque cultural exhibits.

The Agirre Lehendakaria Center evaluates the cycle of conference by Ibarretxe in Brazil, Uruguay and Chile

The latest newsletter of the Agirre Lehendakaria Center for Social and Political Studies (ALC) based on the Leioa Campus of the University of the Basque Country and directed by former Lehendakari Juan Jose Ibarretxe, included an evaluation of the talks that Ibarretxe has carried out in universities, Basque clubs and other places in Brazil, Uruguay and Chile during the month of November.

The Basque Government has opened up the application period for Diaspora Basques in situations of extreme need

The call published today in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country.

Help for Basque clubs to aid those in situations of extreme need in the Basque community abroad was published in today's Official Buleetin of the Basque country.  As part of the agreement and priorities of the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad, a total of 202,000 Euros is dedicated to these grants.  Deadline to apply is one month from tomorrow.

Cesar Arrondo presents his book The Basques of Gandara at the local library in the Argentine city of Chascomus

The presentation was attended by a large crowd interested in the history of Gandara -- a district of Chascomus -- and the presence and influence that Basques and their descendants had in this county (partido) of the province of Buenos Aires. At the end of the 19th Century Gandara was the location for a important factory founded by a group of Basque entrepreneurs.

The Basque Government presents 8 scholarships in Foreign Action for Vitoria-Gasteiz, Brussels, Santiago and Bogota

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country published today (BOPV-EHAA on December 26, 2014) includes the Resolution of the Secretary General of Foreign Action opening up the application process for 8 scholarships in the specialization of professionals in the area of Foreign Action 2015.  Four of these scholarships are set in Vitoria-Gasteiz; with 2 more in Brussels; one in Santiago, Chile ; and that last one for Bogota, Colombia.

Itxaso Cayero was chosen a year ago as one of two NABO’s Euskera coordinators, work that she used to help her predecessor, Izaskun Kortazar, with previously (photoEuskalKultura.com)

Itxaso Cayero is one of NABO’s (North American Basque Organizations) Euskera Coordinators.  She was born in Boise and at 25 years of age her work includes the cultural revitalization and community involvement of the North American Basque community in regards to the language.  She also creates materials to teach Basque to children.

Rain didn’t dampen the Basque celebration at Gral. Las Heras and it concluded with a big BBQ and award ceremony

The main event of Basque Week in Gral. Las Heras are the Basque rural sports (photo Denise Lourtau).

The Zazpirak Bat Basque Club initiative, in Gral. Las Heras, is a classic and so on its 4th edition it gathered a large group of participants once again.  During the entire week, as seen in the photo gallery, the club provided the community with a large number of activities linked to the rural sports and some other Basque traditional ways, like mus, pelota paleta and dance.

The Lehendakari’s Christmas message to Basques around the world mentioned the “Basque Country Strategy,” and the World Congress 2015 in Vitoria

Lehendakari Urkullu addressed Basques around the world on the occasion of Christmas, stressing the importance of their contribution made in their dual capacity as citizens rooted in the country in which they live and carry out their day-to-day lives, and as a members of the community made up of Basques and descendants of Basques who maintain and cultivate the feeling and the bond of attachment to their country and culture of origin.  Urkullu specifically mentioned tghe relevance of the Basque Country Strategy and announced the 6th World Congress of Basque Collectivities to be held in the fall of 2015 in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
