An intimate concert was provided last Sunday afternoon at the Gure Txoko Basque club in Valladolid by the Basque musical group Napoka Iria.  The performance was a courtesy of Napoka Iria musicians Miren Narbaiza and Ander Mujika who had the opportunity to share an interesting day with club members and friends.  The audience warmly applauded the great job done by the group from Gipuzkoa.

Students in Montevideo celebrated ENE at the Euskaro Basque club with games, music, smiles and having a great time

Basque students from Montevideo and San Jose gathered at the Euskaro Basque club in Montevideo to celebrate ENE, the International Day of the Basque Language, with a day full of games, smiles and a great time had by all.  Basque teacher, Andrea Bella, who learned Basque in Uruguay, published several photos in her blog “Uruguaiko azken berriak.” We invite you to visit her blog written in Basque, from Montevideo.  This is definitely a great way to celebrate and experience Basque!

New Basque club in Patagonia: celebration and joy at the presentation of the Euskal Txokoa in San Martin de los Andes

The Euskal Txokoa in San Martin de los Andes was presented to the community with a great festival that was dominated by music, dance and the colors of the Basque Country (photo Eliseo Fourçans).

The event to officially present the new Basque club in Patagonia was attended by many who enjoyed the most attractive aspects of the Basque culture: good dances, great food and wonderful festive climate. From the next door Andean province, Mendiko Eusko Etxea in Bariloche participated in the festivities and promised the newly formed club that they will come back again soon.

Oreka TX receives a standing ovation from their audience in Argentina in the group's first performance in Buenos Aires

The concert took place at the National Library and was attended by more than 200 people who filled the hall to capacity.  At its Argentina debut, the Basque group was comprised of txalapartaris Harkaitz Martinez de San Vicente and Mikel Ugarte, with Mixel Ducau on the alboka.  They shared the stage with Argentine folklorist Silvia Iriondo.

The Berlin Basque club celebrated the International Day of the Basque Language with poetry by Gabriel Aresti and Bertold Brecht

On the 50th anniversary of the publication of the poetry collection Harri eta Herri by Gabriel Aresti, the Berlin Basque club wanted to feature the poet from Bilbao during its 2014 Euskera Day celebration.  Aresti’s poems were read along with texts in German by Bertold Brecht at an event held at the Wekstaff der Kulturen Cultural Center in Berlin.

The Saladillo Basque Club inaugurated its new library named after Angela Catalina Carrano Azcona

The Itxaropen Basque club in Saladillo named its library after one of its founding members: Angela Catalina Carrano Azcona

The inauguration and naming ceremony took place as part of the International Day of Euskera festivities and was attended by Basque board members and the local Mayor Carlos Gorosito.  Cata Carrano Azcona was the volunteer that first iniciated the library. Her children were present and thanked the institution and all present for the tribute to their mother.

The Etxepare Basque Institute will choose three Basque lecturers in Chile, Chicago and Tokyo

The Etxepare Basque Institute is accepting applications for Basque language and culture lecturers for universities in Chile, Chicago and Tokyo.  The lecturer in Chile will teach classes in four universities (University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, University of Valparaiso and the Pontifical Catholic University in Valparaiso); while the other two will teach at the University of Chicago and the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS).  The deadline to apply is January 4th.

Basque supporters in Mar del Plata celebrating the 2014 International Day of the Basque Language (photoEE)

Once again Basques and Friends of the Basque language throughout the world joined together in activities to commemorate the International Day of the Basque Language.  In Argentina, the festivities began on December 3 and continued for the next days and weeks coinciding, in many cases, with end of the year celebrations.  This article is the first installment in the ENE 2014 photo gallery.

Kate Camino: “I was lucky enough to grow up in the Basque culture in the US”

For visitors to the Center for Basque Studies (CBS) in Reno and for researchers who frequent its facilities, she is the face of the institution and its go-to person.  Basque-American Kate Camino has worked for the last 17 years for the University of Nevada, Reno where she is the coordinator of the Office of the Center for Basque Studies.
