Even if it’s one of the newest Basque clubs in Argentina, the Basque club in Puerto Madryn, in the province of Chubut, has taken steps from its foundation until today including managing land where they will build a clubhouse. While they await the allocation of space, members of Etorritakoengatik display ikurriñas and Basque dances at local events.

Today the Japanese version of Linguae Vasconum Primitiae, the first work to be published in Basque in 1545 by Bernat Etxepare, is being launched. Published in Japan by the prestigious Heibonsha publishers, the presentation of this work by Etxepare to the local public is the work of professors Sho Hagio and Hiromi Yoshida, both Basque speakers who did the translation of the texts along with accompanying texts that also includes a preface by Ur Apalategi.

This weekend they will play in India, and from there they’ll travel to Argentina where they will give a concert on December 14 in Buenos Aires, presenting “Nomadak TX” for the first time on Argentine soil. The concert is based on the award-winning documentary by the same name, a sort of musical road movie where the band travels the world. The Basque-Argentine Silvia Iriondo is joining them in Buenos Aires and the group is also ready to give txalaparta workshops at some Basque clubs in the days preceding. Do you want to apply?

The festival ran for two weekends and provided the public musical shows with dancing, games and entertainment, a various gastronomic offering at the booths manned by representatives of twelve communities. With typical dishes, herri kirolak and a large group of dantzaris, the local Mendiko Eusko Etxea Basque club was the pillar of this event that is organized annually in this important touristic destination in Patagonia.

French car manufacturer Citroen presented a special edition of its DS3 yesterday that includes the possibility of personalizing it with a large Ikurriña on the roof. Not just an Ikurriña, but also the flags of Corsica, Brittany, Alsace, Occitan…up to nine designs, each of which is a “French region,” according to the company. Nationalism as a marketing strategy? Well, not so fast...

The second edition of the Basque Gastronomic Festival “Between land and see” is coming with a large program of activities that includes outings on the beach, and gastronomic events with the participation of renowned chefs. There will also be dance performances with a special voucher for dantzaris, a mus tournament and a dance. Come to San Francisco de Bellocq on December 6th and 7th to enjoy a weekend with the best of land, see, and Basque culture.

Basque writer Harkaitz Cano is in Illinois today. He’ll give a talk this afternoon on literature, art and catharsis at the University in Urbana-Champaign. The writer is touring the US, with the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute. Tomorrow he will be at the University of Chicago, and on Sunday he will conclude his trip with talks in Miami, as part of the International Book Fair there.

The commemorative festivities took place in the newly-air conditioned room at the Basque club and included a menu prepared by the club’s well-known cooks. In addition to Paella for 150, the Basque club also provided guests music and Basque dances thanks to the local choir, Errekatarrak, and recently formed Roldan club dance group Euskel Biotza (sic).

This is a referential choir who has performed at prestigious cultural Basque and non Basque events in Chile over the last 75 years. Directed by Maestro Patricio Aburto for the last decades, it is composed of male voices, a few born in the Basque Country with the majority being Chilean of Basque descent, or music lovers who are friends of the Basques and their culture. The third meeting of Basque teachers of European Basque clubs took place on the 17 and 18 of October in Berlin, organized by the HABE’s Euskara Munduan Program. The Berlin Basque club, Gernika Kulturunf., was the host of the meeting that, as in prior editions, was highly attended by teachers. There were 22 teachers from Basque clubs in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca, Valladolid, Bordeaux, Paris, Rome, London and Brussels with the German hosts.
