The latest issue of the digital newsletter from the Delegation of Euskadi in the US and Canada, “Basques,” included announcements of various activities that will take place next weekend as part of the celebration of the International Day of Euskera. It also included other stories, including one on the visit by Basque runners of the New York Marathon this year. The delegation will raffle 10 t-shirts like those worn at the Marathon. One of the most active groups in the Basque Diaspora in Mexico, originated from the VascosMexico mailing list, has landed on social media with a Facebook page that will surely soon become the meeting point of many internet users interested in the Basque world in this country. Additionally, the group has also updated its website with new contents, design, and as always a large photo gallery. Ongi etorri to this new online face of VascosMexico!

Even if Argentina is the champion regarding all things Basque in terms of the Diaspora, Uruguay isn’t far behind and boasts a history of a large percentage of its population impregnated by the legacy of the children of Aitor. EuskalKultura.com had yesterday in its office in Donostia the visit of Maritxu Saralegui and Enrique Poittevin, two Montevideo born Basques very active in the Basque Uruguayan community.

The 19th edition of the festival included a large Basque representation thanks to the Gure Txokoa Basque club and a delegation from the Loretako Euskaldunak from Las Flores. During the festival, club dancers, along with the “Arima Gazte” dance group debuted their baserritarra costumes.

The International Day of Euskera is celebrated on December 3rd every year, and many Basque clubs in the Diaspora are joining in the event. We have heard of activities planned in every corner of the world: Sydney, Madrid, Mallorca, Berlin, Mexico, Quebec, Boise…We’ll leave you with a small live of those. There will be a separate article on activities in Argentina.

The book The Basque Exile in America, was presented yesterday in Bayonne at the Basque Museum, the latest volume in the Urazandi collection published by the Basque Government’s department of the Basque Community Abroad. The presentation included the participation of its author, journalist and researcher Koldo San Sebastian along with Asier Vallejo, Director of the Basque Community Abroad. This afternoon they will present the book in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Salon de Grado at the UPV/EHU at 19:00, and tomorrow in Gernika at the Elai-Alai Hall, at 19:00.

The “Chapter of the Argentine Conference for Peace in the Basque Country” will be the setting for a Reading of a document through which the Argentine society is committed to supporting the resolution of the Basque conflict through “a path of dialogue for peace.” The event, organized by the International Group of Contact, the Social Movement for dialogue, “Lokarri,” represented by its coordinator, Paul Rios and the Service for Peace and Justice “Serpaj” in Argentina, represented by Adolfo Perez Esquivel. The event will also be attended by various personalities in the worlds of politics and culture and members of the Basque Diaspora in the country.

The celebration took place at the Independence Plaza in the Argentine city of Tandil, where the Danborrada, dances and typical costumes told the neighbors that the Basques were celebrating. After the show, the dance continued at the Basque club. The anniversary activities will continue this week with a talk, a photo exhibit, a pelota tournament, among other activities.

Tomorrow, the presentation of the latest volume of the Urazandi collection published by the Basque Government aims to acquaint readers with the history of the Basque clubs and the Basques around the world. This last volume was written by journalist, writer and TV producer, Koldo San Sebastian, who is passionate about the Basque Diaspora. The book details the tour of the exiled Basques to the American continent after the Civil War, in a story that features the figure of Lehendakari Jose Antonio Agirre.

The group runs restaurants for example at the Euskal Etxea in Madrid, or that of Euskal Etxea of Barcelona and others like the Sagardi in Buenos Aires…currently a total of 24 Basque-cooking establishments. Work has begun to open two new venues in the beginning of 2015 in Shanghai and Mexico, announcing that four more will open by year’s end. With its president and founder Iñaki Lopez de Viñaspre at the head, it is expected to invest 9 million euros in 2015 and to create 240 jobs. Today there are a total of 640 employees.
