First NABO meeting of 2015 and the “31st Annual Basque Dinner Dance” in Salt Lake City (see photos)

NABO, the North American federation of Basque organizations held its first meeting of 2015 in Salt Lake City in conjunction with the Utah Basque Club’s “31st Annual Basque Dinner and Dance” that is open to the public and regularly sells out.  This year it was held on January 31 and began with the NABO meeting in the morning, followed by the dinner dance festivities.

The awards from the Letters from the Diaspora contest organized by the Euskaltzaleok and Laurak Bat Basque Clubs in Valencia both landed in America this year, a remarkable feat as submissions were required to be in Basque.  The winners were Delia Beatriz Etchegaray from Argentina in the Basque student category and to Andrea Bella in the Euskaldunes category.  Zorionak to them both!

“Zoopoemes,” a poetry and music recital with Gerardo Markuleta and Jabier Muguruza today at the Expolangues Fair in Paris

Translator and poet, Gerardo Markuleta and musician Jabier Muguruza will be at the Expolangues Fair in Paris thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Azkue Foundation.  In the morning they will give a poetry and musical recital called “Zoopoemes,” that will be repeated in the afternoon at an event organized by the Sorbonne University Nouvelle III by the Basque language and culture lecturer also sponsored by the Etxepare Institute.

The Euskal Txokoa Basque club in San Martin de los Andes, in the Neuquen province of Argentina, was part of the civil/military parade that took place last Wednesday, February 4th, on the 117th anniversary of the city’s foundation. It was a successful debut for the young Basque club, at a largely-attended event.

An intensive Basque course begins on Friday for “travelers” at the Denak Bat in Mar del Plata

There will be eight classes and the contents will be specifically geared towards anyone wishing to manage basic structures of the language before traveling to the Basque Country. This is open to anyone wishing to participate, wanting an introduction to Euskera.  Classes are free and prior registration is not required.

Her name is Huang Hui, even though her Basque friends know her as Marta.  She is 27 years old and works as chief of personnel in the Elay Company from Antzuola in Shanghai-Kunshan.  She studies Basque on Skype.

Almost forty years old, the Txorizo Contest from Yuba City, California will be celebrated this Saturday

Lovers of Basque sausage and Basque homemade gastronomy must be happy since the annual California Txorizo Contest will be held this weekend. On Saturday, February 7, the 39th edition of this culinary feast is expected to attract Basques not only from the Golden State, but also from Nevada and, depending on the weather, from Washington too. As told to EuskalKultura.com by organizer Bert Ithurburn, what makes this event attractive is that “the txorizo is the center of the attention, nothing else.”

Several expeditions have taken place over the last few years in the footsteps of the Basque whalers in Newfoundland, but always in traineras that recreate the ancient whaling boats.  Now, anyone wishing to participate in such a trip and see the amazing landscapes of the North American Atlantic Coast firsthand has a unique opportunity thanks to entrepreneur Iñaki Arizmendi.  Originally of Beasain, but currently residing in New York, Arizmendi is organizing a tourism/cultural trip for 240 people to Newfoundland and Labrador on board of an icebreaker in 2017.

The Summer Basque Camp organized in Argentina by Zingirako Euskaldunak in Chascomus took place on January 5-9 and gathered 20 youth from the community.  Guided by Argentine and Basque chaperones, participants enjoyed five days of recreation during which they were able to expand their knowledge on Basque culture including learning how to cook at the hand of professional sukaldaris.

“Reflecting to Grow:” FEVA invites Argentine Basque clubs to debate their future in Cañuelas

FEVA’s new board of directors elected in 2014 presided by Hugo Andizazabal and Javier Ederra

It will take place on March 7-8 and the invitation includes all the Basque clubs in the country.  Clubs are asked to please RSVP before February 20.  Saturday will also include a meeting to consider relative proposals for the FEVA Pelota project, and the participation of the Federation in the World Council of Basque Pelota.
