Sukaldaris from the Gure Ametza Basque club in Rio Cuarto stood out at the first Taberna of 2015

The first taberna of the year was held at Gure Ametza on March 13 (photoEE)

The chefs from the Basque club prepared four different types of pintxos for more than 70 people and the event was super successful according to diners.  Now, the club is already thinking about the year’s second get-together that will take place in April along with the beginning of the rest of the club’s activities.

The Basque culture enjoyed exposure at an important venue in March at the well-known and referential Kennedy Center in Washington DC.  The writer, filmmaker and journalist, Hasier Etxeberria, participated in the Iberian Suite Festival: Global Arts Remix Festival, on March 7 and 8, giving two talks, as well as presenting two documentaries on Basque cooking as part of the Culinary and Film section.

Bizkaian organist, Pascual Barturen, will conduct a tour and concerts in different Argentinean cities

In June of 2013, Pascual Barturen gave two concerts in Rosario and both captivated the audience with his repertoire of music by Basque Romantic composers (photoEE).

The program is being created now and will be completed as invitations are received by this virtuoso in the coming weeks.  The tour will run from May 28 through June 15, and Basque clubs interested in joining in should have a pipe organ, so it is recommended that concerts take place in churches or halls with this type of instrument.

A Mexican team will play at the Boise, Idaho’s Basque Soccer Friendly, next July 29th, as part of the Jaialdi celebrations

A soccer team from Liga MX and not an US Major League Soccer club will play at the Basque Soccer Friendly on July 29, as announced, yesterday, by the organizing committee. The MLS scheduled its annual All Star Game for the same night as the Jaialdi soccer match, “so we considered contacting Liga MX teams to have the highest quality game possible,” said to EuskalKultura.com Argia Beristain, spokesperson of the committee. In fact, the best players of the American league are recruited for this event, so all the clubs ‘lose’ their stars. The name of the two playing clubs will be oficcially announced in early April.

The University of Liverpool, England, celebrated an international conference entitled “Manuel de Irujo and Basque Politics of the Twentieth Century,” on March 9.  The conference, organized by Gorka Mercero (professor of the Basque Studies Program) and Xabier Irujo (co-director of the Center for Basque Studies in Reno), analyzed the ideology of Irujo: Christian-democracy, complete respect for human rights, republicanism and the construction of a Basque republic in the heart of a united Europe.

A new season of the radio program Presencia Vasca begins, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015

The live radio program is run by Federico Borras, and can be heard on Sundays from 11-12pm on LRI 365 University Radio (105.7 Mhz) in Parana.  The program that began in March of 1990 has now reached its 25th uninterrupted year on the air and it will be celebrated with festivities on April 26 coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the Urrundik Basque Association.

Fr. Bernardo Arregui, from Tolosa, was the first priest to come to the US to serve as a Basque chaplain in 1911.  Aita Martxel Tillous, from Xiberoa, who passed away in 2009, was the last.  Nobody was expecting a replacement but a few months ago Aita Antton Egiguren arrived to the US as the new Basque priest in Boise. Basque dance classes began early this year in Pergamino, in February, with two clear goals: to get ready for 'Buenos Aires Celebrates' and 'Semana Nacional Vasca'.  In the meantime, the club has many commitments and so a group from the club attended the tribute that was carried out on the International Women’s Day.

The annual Basque club dinner, whose goal is to join in the international celebration on March 8th, marked its 13th edition this year, and has become one of the “few of its kind that takes place in Villa Maria.”  On its behalf, its regular activities that the club provides will begin on Friday with a meeting for members and friends.

After its approval yesterday by the Government, the call for 2015 grants for Basque clubs will be published in the coming days

The Governing Council of Eusko Jaurlaritza approved the call for 2015 Basque club and federation grants at a meeting yesterday.  Its publication in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country is scheduled for March 18.  The month-long application period, when grant applications can be submitted, begins the day after the call is published.
