Korrika, the popular race in favor of Euskera and the euskaltegis organized by AEK, will once again jump borders on this its 19th edition.  Thanks to the Diaspora it will arrive to a multitude of sites around the world.  Currently there are already events being organized in Havana, Cancun, Lima, Shanghai, Sydney, Paris, Valencia, Edinburgh, Mexico City, La Plata, New York, Boise…and many more!

Everything is ready in San Francisco to celebrate this week-end Basque Cultural Center’s 33rd anniversary

Joko Garbi, Pala, and Esku Pilota. The fronton of the Basque Cultural Center will be the epicenter of the activities to be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 14 and 15, during the celebration of the 33rd anniversary of Gure Euskal Etxea. Despite the fact that the official program reads that meal reservations must be prepaid by February 9, Valerie Arrechea, member of the Board of Directors, told EuskalKultura.com that “we are still accepting RSVPs – but the sooner we get them the better.” On Sunday, senior members Jose Mari Miura, Pedro Salaburu, and Kayet Sorhouet will be awarded with the San Francisco Bizi Emankorra distinction.

Annie Gavica was born in Paradise Valley, Nevada but she currently lives in Boise.  Dantzari, she plays txalaparta, and pandero, and has been to the Basque Country six times.  She is specislist of educational programs at the Boise Basque Museum, in this a Jaialdi year.

Writer Bernardo Atxaga, one of the best-known Basque authors around the world, traveled to Bulgaria at the end of January thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Cervantes Institute to present the translation of his book Obabakoak into Bulgarian.  On January 29, Atxaga gave a talk at a bookstore in Sofia that was attended by nearly 100 people.

Gure Txokoa and Euzko Etxea represented the Basque Country at the “Whole World in Alta Gracia” festival

On February 6, the day of Basque dances at the “Whole World in Alta Gracia” festival the Cordobatarrak group performed five traditional dances in front of a large audience (photo Todo el Mundo en Alta Gracia).

The Basque presence at the event in Alta Gracia dedicated to its local foreign communities could be seen not only in the inaugural parade but also in the music and dance performances that took place on the main stage.  In the parade that ran through the middle of town the Basque community was represented doubly by the dancers from Gure Txokoa in Cordoba city and that of Euzko Etxea in Villa Maria.

After the successful experience in 2012, Chef Itziar Aguirre, from Rosario, returns with another edition of “Pilpileando Argentina.”  The event, that combines Basque gastronomy with a spirit of solidarity in the Basque clubs, will take place throughout the year on a schedule created by FEVA. The conditions to participate and the invitation to enroll will be sent to Basque clubs in the near future by the Federation.

Bizkaiko Foru Aldundia, the Provincial Government of Bizkaia, has launched a talent network “Be Basque Talent Network,” that gathers nearly 5,500 highly qualified professionals and researchers in the Basque Country as well as in another 65 countries around the world.  It has also created a map, “Basque Talent Map,” where you can identify the job placement by country and city of network members or their job sector.

New life in Peru, with “Young Basques in Lima:” Euskera, solidarity projects in the jungle…and, soon Korrika!

This group of Young Basques in Lima (Limako Euskal Gazteria) was born in august of last year and in just a few months has managed to bring new life in the Basque Club in Lima with Basque classes, diners, genealogy talks and a very special solidarity project where they take gifts and school supplies to children who live in the middle of the jungle.  The group was created when some young Basques moved to Lima and started getting together at the club, that received them with open arms.

The name of the teams that will face off in this awaited soccer match will not be known until the “end of March or early April,” but everybody expects the European one to be one of the Basque teams of the Spanish 'La Liga'. Nevertheless, on the website, soccer aficionados will find updated information on the game, “as well as sponsorship and donation opportunities,”  as Argia Beristain, spokesperson of the organizing group, told EuskalKultura.com.
