More than 600 spectators attended the debut of “Makila,” a Basque dance show created in Paris

The debut of “Makila,” in Paris was a complete success, as club sources told EuskalKultura.com.  More than 600 people went to the Asnieres-sur-Seine Theater to enjoy this representation of Basque dance created by the local Basque community.  Now, organizers want to take the show to other places and Basque clubs, and invite anyone interested to get in touch with them.

NABO’s Basque Filmategia: A growing film catalog directed towards both individuals and clubs, spreading knowledge about all things Basque

“It’s more than entertainment, (cinema) is another medium by which we learn about our heritage,” said Pihilippe Acheritogaray, person in charge of the Filmategia, in conversation with EuskalKultura.com. A continuation of the Basque Film Series organized by the San Francisco, California-based Basque Educational Organization, NABO’s film archive offers over twenty movies, from documentaries to dramas and comedies, with English subtitles.

After working hard all summer, the Viedma and Patagones Basque club will inaugurate its clubhouse on March 28

The event consists of two parts: the official inaugural ceremony and a toast.  Both will take place at the clubhouse that has been recently recycled on Alerdi Street 169 in Viedma, and will be attended by authorities from the provinces of Buenos Aires and Rio Negro.  Once the clubhouse has been opened, the first event to take place there will be Aberri Eguna on April 5.

Amuma Says No will take up Jim Jausoro Band’s torch of music at the Ontario Annual Benefit Dinner & Dance

The Ontario, Oregon Basque Club will celebrate, on February 28, its 68th Charity Dinner – almost a must-go for locals, both Basque and non-Basque. As usual, a live lamb will be donated by the Gabiola family but, this year, Amuma Says No will bring back the spirit of Jim Jausoro's Band, since past member Domingo Ansotegui’s son, Dan, is the accordionist of the folk group from Boise. “We are very happy to have them here. We hope they will attract more young people to the dance,” told to Euskalkultura.com Lisa Corcostegui, president of the club.

Learning Euskera online: the Mintzanet awards recognize the best “bidelari” and “bidelagun” of the year

The Mintzanet Project held its 2014 awards ceremony yesterday in Donostia where Mariaje Barandiaran received the best “Bidelagun” award (a Basque speaker who helps other practice) and Raul Alfaro was the best “Bidelari” (someone who practices Euskera via Skype).  Directors of the project emphasized that there are many Basque in the Diaspora participating and learning/practicing Basque online.

Singing Santa Ageda in Brussels, Elko, Boise and Madrid: once again the Diaspora took to the streets to follow the tradition

In Boise the Santa Ageda procession began with a lot of music at the Basque Museum

In Euskal Herria going out to sing verses on the eve of Santa Ageda is a very old and loved tradition.  In the Diaspora, there have been groups who have maintained the custom and that do the same every year in their cities, to sing to the saint, like in Boise or Madrid.  This year, we also have received images from Brussels and Elko, NV.

Izaskun Kortazar: “You can stay in Euskadi, but if you don’t leave and get to know other things, you are missing out on a lot”

Living in Boise, Izaskun Kortazar plans to travel to Brazil this summer to volunteer and teach Basque classes thanks to the Euskal Etxea in Rio Grande do Sul (photo EuskalKultura.com)

We found her at Boise State University where she teaches full time.  She is 38 years old and has lived in the states for the last twelve years.  She is a Euskaldunberri and worked as NABO’s Euskera coordinator.  This summer she is volunteering in Brazil and is already learning Portuguese.  She is Basque of the world.

Denak Bat in Cañuelas has published the cost of the vouchers for the Dantzari Get-Together on Aberri Eguna 2015

The ninth edition of the Cañuelas Aberri Eguna event will take place on April 11 and 12 and as every year all Basque clubs in the area wishing to participate are invited.  Activities will begin on Saturday afternoon with a dance performance at the Plaza San Martin, and will continue with a public dance, concluding with a farewell luncheon on Sunday.

The local Basque club will celebrate its first 50 years at the end of this month and wishes to do so with due importance.  The main events will be on the same day of the anniversary, on February 28th, and will consist in a talk on Basque culture and a ceremony that will gather authorities, members, former club presidents and will also elect the flag bearers of the institution.

When international representation of Basque cooking lies in America with Basque cooks in the Diaspora…

 At the International Conference of Gastronomy and Tourism (CIMGAT) the Basque Chef was given the opportunity to share recipes and specialties with a large number of Latin-American cooks (photoCIMGAT).

The international projection of Basque gastronomy isn’t a newsworthy event. But it is, of course, when the Basque “gastronomical-cultural” ambassador is a chef from the Diaspora.  After being presented in Paraguay at the International Multidisciplinary Conference of Gastronomy and Tourism, and while she was preparing “Pilpileando 2015” the Basque-Argentine Chef, Itziar Aguirre, will participate in the Gastronomy and Tourism Conference in Oaxaca, Mexico in March.
