A huge dragon toured the streets of Paris along with Eskual Etxea Basque club’s carnival entry

The giant dragon led the Paris Basque club’s carnival entry (photoCLaza)

Last Sunday, February 15, the Euskal Etxea in Paris joined in the local carnival celebrations, and how!  The club’s procession toured the streets of the city led by a gigantic dragon, contributing to the atmosphere in the streets of Saint Ouen, the district where the club is located. Creating the huge dragon took several weeks of hard work, but as seen here, it was a complete success.

The direction for Basque Communities Abroad publishes the list of the 2014 grants for Basque Centers

The Direction for the Basque Communities Abroad has just communicated the list of Basque Centers that have been selected to receive the grants 2014. A total number of 82 Basque Clubs have been selected. Check the list, here. It will be soon published in the Oficial Bulletin of the Basque Country.

Basque fashion designer, Roberto Etxeberria, returned to New York with a new collection that was presented once again with the collaboration of US model Shaun Ross and with faces from winners of Germany’s Top Model.  Etxeberria, from Eibar, surprised everyone with a nod to his Basque roots, incorporating traditional Basque verses from Santa Ageda into the show.  Best way to explain it, is to show it.  See video.

On February the 8th, one of the most famous US tripota events of the year was celebrated: Gardnerville, Nevada’s annual Tripota Luncheon. “We had the biggest group ever,” told Anita Izoco, vice-president of the Club, to EuskalKultura.com. Now, the Euskal Etxea is getting ready to host, next month, their ever-popular Mus Tournament.

“Loreak” and “Echevarriatik-Etxeberriara” were winners in the official section of Barcelona’s Zinemaldia

Sunday marked the awards ceremony of the official section of the Zinemaldia organized by the Barcelona Euskal Etxea.  The film Loreak had won two awards the Txapela D’Or (Golden Txaplea) for Best Fiction and the Best Film in Basque, while Echevarriatik-Etxeberriara won the Txapela D’or for Best Documentary.  After the contest, Zinemaldia continues with parallel activities such as a movie marathon, short films from Kimuak and a special section for children, Txo!, among others.

Patxi Perez: “I would like to come back for Semana Vasca but also to continue teaching dances at the Basque clubs”

During a visit to Argentina, Master dantzari and musician-txistulari Patxi Perez taught dance classes and music at various Basque clubs in the province of Buenos Aires and in Patagonia.  After his trip, and having met with various dance groups, Perez was very satisfied with his trip, and has found some things that could be improves and is willing to make a deal.

The presentation of the book La Real Sociedad Bascongada and the Vasconovohispano Project of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Aranzazu 1791-1850, by Jesus Hector Trejo Huerta, took place at the Colegio de las Vizcainas.  Representatives of the culture and academic worlds were present, such as the RSBAP, the Jose Maria Basagoiti Archive, ADABI, as well as Mexico City Basque club President, Josu de Garritz, and Delegate of Euskadi, Ibon Mendibelzua.

Zazpiak Bat Basque club’s activity in St. Pierre et Miquelon is proof of the historic Basque presence in that area of Newfoundland

Zazpiak Bat in Saint Pierre et Miquelon, an archipelago of islands in Newfoundland, along with Quebec, are the most northern Basque communities in America.  Basque whalers, and later cod fishers, were the European pioneers in these waters.  Basque descendants and fans of Basque pelota are gathering today at the Zazpiak Bat Basque club, as well as at the Basque Pelota League that which boasts a century-old fronton in St. Pierre.  There is also a project underway to get in touch with more Basque clubs on the East Coast such as New England, New York, Washington or Miami.

“This year’s txorizos were really good,” told to EuskalKultura.com Bert Ithurburn, organizer of the event celebrated this past Saturday. In fact, there was a draw in the finals and an extra judge was needed, as a tiebreaker. It is also worth mentioning that Guibert had to compete against his own son’s team to get the winner’s trophy and apron. Next year this popular Basque Californian will reach its 40th edition.

The French Basque Club donated hundreds of toys to the Pedro de Elizalde Hospital in Buenos Aires

For the second year in a row, the Sub-commission on Culture at the French Basque Club – Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea gathered and donated toys and hygiene products to children and families of patients at the Pediatric Hospital, Pedro de Elizalde.  The collection took place previously and the club’s end of the year party.
