Gemma Sangines is a psychologist from Bilbao that lives in Valencia. She is integrated, and making her life there, but always faithful to the affection that she feels for Euskera, the language that she teaches at Euskaltzaleok and that will be celebrated now during Korrika in Valencia.

The race in favor of Euskera was part of the attractions provided by Basque clubs in Buenos Aires to thousands of neighbors and tourists that visited the Community Food Tasting on the Avenida de Mayo. Besides disseminating Euskera at the stands of Euskaltzaleak and Laurak Bat, there was also music, dancing and of course some great food choices.

At 91 years of age, Clelia “Kela” Gorri continues working tirelessly for the Etxe Alai Basque club in Pehuajo. To this day, she continues to accompany the club in is activities and above all has become a benchmark beyond the city’s Basque community.

Today, the race in favor of the Basque language begins in Urepel (Lower Navarre), however this race has crossed geographic boundaries for years and has reached all over the Diaspora, adding a bit of the local flavor to it everywhere it is celebrated. That is why Necoceha will take it to the beach and will follow the run with a picnic at the Miguel Lillo Park. Along with this, the Basque club also invites everyone to join them at their 70th anniversary dinner that will take place on Saturday April 18th.

The St. Nicholas Catholic Women from Rupert, Idaho have scheduled the 57th annual Basque Festival Dinner for this 21st of March. The program includes a dinner, an auction, a drawing, and a concert. This Basque event is the main fundraiser for the local school having raised, in recent years’ editions, up to $40,000. “We are lucky to have a very generous community, everybody wants to help, not just Catholics and Basques,” told Cyndy Berlin-Lantz, member of the organizing group, to EuskalKultura.com.

Here it is, everyone is excited in the Basque Country for the beginning of another edition of Korrika. The race in favor of Euskera and the AEK Euskaltegis begins tomorrow in Urepele and from there it will move runners in all seven territories to support this claim. In the eighth territory the events in favor of Korrika have already been going for a couple of weeks, and they promise to continue heartily until the end of the month (and further, in Boise and Havana). This past Sunday, March 15, Orio native (Gipuzkoa, Basque Country) organist Loreto Aramendi offered a concert at the Our Lady of Refuge church in Brooklyn, New York. Her performance was the penultimate of a series of concerts to celebrate –and fund− the restoration of the octogenarian organ. “It’s been a great experience,” said the musician to EuskalKultura.com. “I felt at home, the church was full, and they asked me to come back. I’m very happy.”

The Valparaiso Basque club welcomed an official Basque Government visit, led by Secretary General of Foreign Action, Marian Elorza, and the Delegate of Euskadi in Chile, Rafael Kutz. The visitors appreciated the work of the institution about to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Basque association in this city seat of the National Parlament of Chile. Zorionak!

The Eusko Etxea in Caracas held its General Assembly on March 14, when it elected its new board of directors among other things. The new team includes Izaskun Azpiritxaga, Oyane Arregui, Kattalin Alaba, Maialen Azpiritxaga, Unai Azpiritxaga and Xabier Landa. Zorionak and much success!
