A talk on Basque nutrition, the Rauch Euskal Etxea’s contribution to the “National Bird Festival”

The Gure Txoko Basque club gave a talk on Basque food as part of the “National Festival of Birds” in Rauch

Thanks to Maite Salsamendi, with a degree in Food Technology, the Gure Txoko Basque Club and the Basque culture was present at the 2016 edition of the “National Festival of Birds,” in Rauch, in the province of Buenos Aires.  After the talk, the audience was invited to share some homemade rice pudding.

“Jai Alai Blues,” “Amalur,” and a selection of short Basque films at the Film Festival in Toulouse, France

The documentary “Jai Alai Blues” tells the passionate story of this Basque sport in America

Two feature-length films will be shown in the coming days at the “Toulouse Spanish Film Festival,” in France.  On the one hand, Jai Alai Blues, a passionate documentary about the history of the frontons and Jai Alai in America; and on the other, a classic Basque film Amalur (1968), directed by sculptor, Nestor Basterretea and Fernando Larruquert.  There will also be a selection of Basque shorts at the festival that runs from this Friday through October 9th.

November 18 is the deadline to nominate candidates for the 2016 ENE Award that recognizes the work in the Diaspora in favor of Euskera

The deadline to nominate candidates for the ENE Saria for 2016 is November 18.  This award presented annually by Eusko Ikaskuntza recognizes the work of entities in the Diaspora in favor of Euskera during the preceding year.  The name of the entity or winning person will be communicated on December 3, coinciding with celebrations of Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna (ENE, International Day of Euskera).

The William A. Douglass Chair opens today

The Etxepare Basque Institute and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst inaugurate today the "William A. Douglass Chair in Basque Cultural Studies". The chair will open with an Inaugural Lecture by William A. Douglass, co-founder of the Center for Basque Studies of Reno and renowned expert in Basque anthropology and culture. Also, international experts willl participate in the simposium “William Douglass, Basque Studies and the Anthropology of Europe”.

More than 50 artists on stage at the Annual Dance Festival organized by the Urrundik Basque Association in Parana

The Basque Association, Urrundik, in Parana held its Festival of Danzas on September 18

Basque cultural reference in Parana and this area of the country, the Basque-Argentine Association, Urrundik, provided the community with another edition of the Festival of Basque Dances at the local 3rd of February Theater.  Along with the hosts dance group, the program was complete with dancers of tango and other local folkloric groups.  The event was very successful and received a lot of media coverage.

Foreign students studying Basque in Euskadi during the summer: “We are going to miss the pintxos and the sirimiri”

A'gota Blanka Krizsàn from Hungary and Christian Hahne from Germany have studied Euskera at the Barnetegi in Amorebieta this summer (photo Yolanda Veiga-El Correo)

Blanka, is from Hungary and is 25 years old.  She heard her first words of Basque working as a nanny in Plentzia, (Bizkaia).  Christian is also 25 and is from Germany and he started learning Basque because he knew in Germany a teacher native of Leketiio.  The two have spent this summer at a Barnetegi in Amorebieta - Zornotza.  Interview by Yolanda Veiga, published by El Correo.

The Eusko Alkartasuna Basque Club in Sao Paulo celebrated Pintxo Eguna and opens voting in its Photography Contest

On September 18, the Eusko Alkartasuna Basque Club in Sao Paulo celebrated Pintxo Eguna, where attendees could enjoy pintxos that combined by Basque and Brazilian touches.  Now, the Basque Club is in the process of voting in its Photography Contest. Voting for the finalists is open until October 10, and the one who gets the most votes will be featured in the club’s 2017 calendar.  Do you want to see them?  Keep reading.

The Cordoba Film Series continues this Monday, organized by Gerora in honor of Fidela Bernat

The last speaker of Roncal Basque died 25 years ago.  In Cordoba, Argentina the Gerora Basque Association honors her in a film series named “Orai Keben – Orain Hemen” (here now), four get-togethers where various chapters of the documentary about Basque, Euskara Jendea will be shown.  After a first really successful chapter, the second will come next Monday at the College of Languages.  Gerora announces this, among its other activites.

Basque weekend in Montpellier: meeting of French Basque clubs and their annual club festival

The Eskualduak Basque Club in Montpellier will be the site of the French Basque community this weekend.  For starters, on Saturday, it will host the annual French Basque Clubs meeting, that will be attended for the first time by the young Basque club in Marseille.  Afterwards, on Sunday, the club’s annual festival will take place with entertainment provided by Jean Louis Bergara and Beñat Chaubadendeguy.
