Euskadi wins the 39th International Mus Tournament of Basque Collectivities with Venezuela coming in second

The 39th International Mus Tournament of Basque Collectivities concluded last Saturday in Donostia with the participation of delegations from 12 countries.  The Txapela went to a team from Euskadi, Juan Carlos Korta and Eusebio Zabala, with second place going to the team from Venezuela, Jose Luis Ramos and Mariano Larrañaga.  Zorionak!

“Baskos de la Confluencia” is born, a new Basque club in the Patagonian provinces of Neuquen and Rio Negro

The first board of directors of the new club in Neuquen and Cipolletti, “Baskos de la Confluencia,” is organizing an event for the end of month.  The event, a gastronomic event will include typical dishes and an ambience that will promote the dissemination of the culture of Euskal Herria.  Members of the new club meet each Thursday and have already begun the process to obtain legal status and have launched a contest to choose the club’s logo.

Kepa Junkera and Argentine Accordionist Chango Spasiuk presented their show “Sea of Bellows,” last week in Manresa, Madrid and Barcelona.  Due to the expectation of our readers, we have gathered some video of the show.  Both artists are immersed in different projects, but in view of the interest, there is no doubt that they will provide more concerts, and even some in Argentina.

The Government of the Argentine Province of San Juan honors the local Euskal Etxea for its work in the dissemination of Basque culture

The San Juan Eusko Etxea received the award on the Day of the Immigrant 2016

The distinction awarded by the Provincial Government, the National Director of Migration and the San Juan Federation of Collectivities took place as part of the Day of the Immigrant festivities, in hopes of highlighting the work of those who keep the roots of their homeland alive.  It was a tremendous joy for the Basques in San Juan, who had also recently received the Delegate of Euskadi, Sara Pagola.

The 40th Anniversary Taska at the Anaitasuna Basque Club in Maipu held on Saturday, October 8th

Anaitasuna, the Basque club in Maipu, has been holding commemorative events throughout the year to mark the 40th anniversary of the institution.  The last was an Anniversary Event, that was as successful as the prior events.  Two hundred people gathered at the club including FEVA’s vice-president, Arantxa Anitua; representatives from Laurak Bat, and former dantzaris who traveled expressly from la Plata, Tandil, Olavarria and Dolores to perform at the festivities.

The theme of the 7th Gaztezulo Basque Video Contest is the film by Charlie Chaplin “The Kid”

The magazine Gaztezulo, with the support of the Azkue Foundation, has launched the 7th Gaztezulo Video Contest in hopes of supporting the use of Basque by youth in audio/visual media. The contest is open to participants all over the world, as long as the language used in the video is Basque.  We know that Basque students in Basque clubs have experience in this type of recording and we encourage you to participate and strive for the 1,200 Euro prize.  Zorte on! “Buenos Aires Celebrates" will be on March 18th in 2017, year of the 140th anniversary of the Laurak Bat Basque Club

In 2017, the Buenos Aires Laurak Bat Basque Club will celebrate its 140th birthday and will begin it celebrating at “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country,” on March 18th. The festivities will continue on the following day at the club’s facilities with the presence other invited clubs.  Along with this invitation the club invites you this weekend, on Saturday, to a talk about Lehendakari Agirre followed by the celebration of Dantzari Eguna.

Elias Echegoyen, one of the last surviving founders of the Eusko Alkartasuna Basque Club in Sao Paulo, dies

Elias Echegoyen, one of the last living founders of the Eusko Alkartasuna Basque Club, created in Sao Paulo in 1959, passed away this week.  A few months ago, the director of EuskalKultura.com visited Sao Paulo and recorded a short video of Elias.  Originally from Xabier, Navarre, this sensitive and committed Basque will be remembered at a funeral on Saturday.  Our condolences to his family and to all of his friends in the Basque community in Brazil.

The Provincial Government of Bizkaia presents a selection of publications published at the end of the 19th century by the Basque community in exile.  A chapter of our past that invites reflection on this time when migration flows are a topic of conversation.  The resources exhibited include Basque publications from Europe and Latin America that can be seen until October 31 at the Provincial Library in Bilbao.  We offer a sample in pdf format.

Ché Guevara’s brother seeks his roots in Euskal Herria, on the program “Origen” that debuts today on ETB

The Basque roots of a historic character like Ernesto Ché Guavara, will be discovered today on ETB2, in the debut of the program Origen.  This format, presented by journalist, Olga Zabalgogeaskoa, invites Juan Martin Guevara, brother or the Argentine myth, to get to know the Basque Country and thanks to historians and genealogists, research his Basque roots as well as even meet family members.  The program debuts at 22:25 on ETB2, and can also be seen online and on Canal Vasco/ETB Sat.
