Activities organized by the city, 9 de Julio, in Argentina to celebrate the Day of Cultural Diversity were held at the Gral. Belgrano Plaza and included the participation of the Italian, Spanish, Irish, Japanese, and Basque communities. The Etxe Maitea Basque Club participated in the events with a cultural stand, the only one at the festival, and in a gesture of solidarity, gave the food stand to the ALCEC Association.

The Mayor of Plasentia, Canada, Wayne Power, and Councilwoman Noella Collins, will be in Plentzia, Bizkaia starting Friday, until the 17th of October to work on a sister-city agreement between the Plentzia in the Basque Country (formerly Plasencia de Butron) and that founded nearly 5 centuries ago in Newfoundland by Basque whalers who left their imprint there. Last Saturday, October 8th, the Basque American community held a festival and cheerful event with the celebration of the Rocklin 12th annual Basque Festival, NABO Autumn meetig and gathering of singers and bertsolaris, NABO Kantari Eguna. More than 300 friends gathered in Rocklin to enjoy a day of singing, music, Basque dance, Mus, rural sports and a dance to the music of Jean Flesher. Following is a photo gallery of the event.

They are having an adventure of a lifetime. Ten children from the Donostei School in Baigorri are currently in the US, where they will visit California and Nevada in the footsteps of their families who immigrated to America. The trip is the culmination of “Arbasoen Ildotik,” a project of studies on emigration that they have been preparing for several years. Now, they will interview people who left the Basque Country to find a better life and their descendants. No better way to learn, and lesson that they will certainly never forget.

After the successful first experience in 2015, the “Uruguaiko Euskara Ikasleak – Basque Students of Uruguay” returned to the beaches of Santa Lucia del Este for the second “Asteburupasa,” an entire Basque speaking weekend for students and teachers. Sponsored by FIVU, the group enjoyed three days immersed in Euskera and the Basque culture thanks to irakasles, Andrea Bella and Martin Zabalza.

Choirs from San Pedro and Baradero joined those in Arrecifes at a concert held to celebrate the 25 years of the local Basque Cultural Center (EKE, Eusko Kultur Etxea). As part of the festivities there was also an exhibition of wood carving by the group Yvyra. At the inauguration, local artist, Ricardo Porta presented the Center with a painting of the “Basque patriot” and historic reference of the Center, Lucio Echaniz.

Voices from the past, specifically those from World War I, where Basque soldiers who were taken prisoner by Germany recorded their desires, longing, songs and messages for their families. The recordings became known thanks to the Museum of Ethnography in Berlin, and now, a project by the EKE and Mondragon University have presented "Maitia nun zira?," a documentary about them.

Invited by the organization, the Basque musician and composer from Hondarribia participated as a workshop leader in the “Madryn Canto” 2016. During the festival’s inauguration, members of the local Etorritakoengatik Basque Club surprised the Maestro with an Aurresku. During his stay in Argentina, Maestro Busto gathered in Buenos Aires with members of the Lagun Onak Choir. He presented them with “Urrundik Usoa” (Distant Dove), a song with his own arrangements, on this his third trip to the country.

There were more than 400 people for lunch, at the Basque Weekend organized by Euzko Alkartasuna in Machachin, Argentine La Pampa. The event also included various activities for those who traveled to the city in La Pampa for the weekend. Mus tournament, Basque rural sports, dancing and tributes were some of the proposals that were held. Organizers are hoping to make this an annual event and include it on the Argentine Basque calendar.

This Saturday, October 8, the Eusko Etxea will be busy with the fourth edition of Gayaldi, a festival that celebrates and upholds diversity in all areas, and Maritxu Kajoi, a local festival that originated in Arrasate, Gipuzkoa. One of the characteristics of Maritxu Kajoi, which was created as a joke, is that attendees should dress elegantly and formally, even though the spirit of the event is much more irreverent.
