The five prizes in EuskalKultura’s September raffle will travel to Argentina, in the case of three of them; and the other two going to Brazil and Uruguay. Raffle entrees came from 11 countries and the last prize, “Guided Visit of Donostia including a pintxo tasting,” was very successful. Here is a list of the winners. There will be a new raffle in October. Make sure you enter, it’s all about luck!

Besides the huge local Basque participation, the festivities will also have guests coming from the Basque Country like the groups Kalakan and Emon. The event will also feature the language of Euskal Herria with initiatives such as “Euskodromo,” a space designed specifically for speaking Basque. Other proposals include txikiteos, cider day, dances, and artistic demonstrations and evenings.

The Emmy Awards recognizes the best shows and television professionals in the US, and this year there was a Basque among the awardees. “Eskerrik asko danori,” is how long time American resident Basque-Venezuelan journalist, Ricardo Arambarri, finished his thank you speech after winning the Emmy for the Outstanding Investigative Journalism in Spanish 2016, for “Desamparados desechables,” broadcast on Univision. “This award is the highest in my profession,” Arambarri told EuskalKultura.com, whose parents are from Gernika, “I had to finish my speech in my mother tongue.”

This Sunday the 2016 edition of Gaztemundu will begin in Donostia-San Sebastian. Youth from Basque clubs around the world wil take part in this year’s edition dedicated to Basque gastronomy. The sessions will run through Saturday the 15th, with the technical collaboration provided by the Basque Culinary Center. Participants come from Argentina, Chile and the US and will begin arriving tomorrow to Hondarribia and Loiu for a general presentation of the program on Sunday afternoon.

The “Amerikanuak” former sheepherder immigrants to the US who returned to the Basque Country and their families, have been particularly active lately. On September 3 they held the annual “Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan,” gathering this time in Isaba, Navarre, and they were welcomed the day before at the Palace of Navarre by President, Uxue Barkos. On the same Sunday, other Amerikanuak were honored at Artzai Eguna in Legazpi, Gipuzkoa. And this Sunday they have another date in Ortzaize (Lower Navarre).

These are the prizes for September's raffle: a guided visit in Donostia, that includes Pintxo tasting in the Old Part; a CD with 18 children’s songs in Basque; “Gatz eta berakatz,” the latest CD by “Amuma Says No” from Boise, ID; the DVD “Leku hutsak, hitz beteak,” by Bernardo Atxaga in Basque with English subtitles, and the book "We are Basque-Argentines" by Magdalena Mignaburu and Josu Legarreta.

The Peru Basque Club said good-bye to September with a Basque Week that was full of activities, September 19-25. The festivities began with a master Basque class, followed by the screening of the film Loreak, a wine tasting of Rioja wines, and a pintxo-pote on Thursday followed by a meal. The activity, organized by the Buenos Aires Basque University (UVBA) at the National Library of Congress will take place October 3-7 and will introduce the local audience to an interesting program of activities, including the debut screening of the film Gernika by director Koldo Serra. It is the fifth edition of this initiative in support of spreading knowledge about this culture “that constitutes a large part of the Argentine culture.”

Organized by the Etorritakoengatik Basque Club in Puerto Madryn, the second meeting of Euskal Etxeas in Patagonia gathered representatives from the Basque clubs in Viedma-Patagones, Comodoro Rivadavia, Neuquén (Comahue Euskal Etxea), San Martin de los Andes and the local club. Participants made a positive evaluation of the activity and planned the next meeting for April 2017, in Neuquen.

Last weekend, the city of Montpellier became the meeting point for the Basque community in France, as host of the annual Basque Club meeting in this country. Attending the meeting were representatives from clubs in Pau, Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille and Montpellier, who exchanged experiences and information. On the following day, all of them attended the Annual Eskualdunak Basque Festival that was attended by more than 150 people and included music provided by Jean Louis Bergara and Beñat Chaubandendeguy.
