The Euzko Etxea in La Plata let us know about its latest activities, as well as some new ones including signing an agreement with entities like the Casal of Catalan Countries, universities like UNLP and UE, as well as with surrounding schools. On the year of its 70th anniversary, the Euzko Etxea will celebrate tomorrow with a Paella Contest and will soon inaugurate a workshop on traditional Basque music, taught by Professor Iñaki Esquiroz. The club also recently held its General Assemby and reelected Javier Clua as its president.

The Haize Hegoa Basque Club in the Uruguayan capital will celebrate San Juan 2017 with a double activity. On the one hand, as a prelude, last Friday Enrique Poittevin gave a talk on the St John's Basque traditions at the clubhouse, and on the other, on June 23rd, club members will light a bonfire in front of the club that will be surrounded by singing and dancing. Besides that, remember that the Basque Gastronomic Festival concluded in May at the Hotel Cottage also in the capital city with Haize Hegoa’s support.

As part of the agreement between the La Plata Euzko Etxea Basque club and the Foundation, presided by Jorge Zorreguieta with the University of the East, the Chair in Basque Culture and Language will be taught by Dr. Carlos Irisarri who will teach a six-day course. After completing the course, participants will receive a certificate. During the inauguration, next Wednesday, the Basque club and the Foundation will honor Daniel Oiarbide who served as the Etxepare Lecturer at UNLP through last December.

Having concluded his trip to Colombia, Lehendakari Urkullu refused to leave the rest of the expedition when their flight was nearly cancelled. Diplomatic success when President Santos joined a meeting with the Lehendakari and Colombia’s High Commissioner for Peace. Urkullu also met with Basque businesses and the Basque community in the country. Outside of the program, Seratta, a restaurant in Bogota with Basque roots was also inaugurated. With activities that included the general public, and others that are aimed more for the Basque community, the Saladillo Basque club enjoys a strong relationship with the city. In the month of June, the traditional celebration of San Juan responds to an initiative that unites the club with the city and the neighborhood school where the Basque club resides. Aimed more at Basque club members, the Mus Championship was held last Friday with Hector Altamira and Santiago Santamarina to represent the club at the national tournament in Chacabuco.

The Gure Txokoa Basque Club in the Argentine capital of Cordoba will raffle a trip to Euskal Herria and entering is really easy. All you have to do is purchase a ticket at $1,000, even in five payments of $200 and you will be entered. The possibilities of winning are good since only 150 tickets are available for sale. Along with this, the club also let us know that in July they are organizing a talk about San Ignacio and that they will be celebrating both San Ignacio and San Fermin.

The event was held on Tuesday, concluding the first day of Urkullu’s visit at the head of a business and institutional expedition to Colombia. The reception and travel had been coordinated by the Delegation of Euskadi in Chile, Peru and Colombia, headed by Rafael Kutz Garaizabal. Urkullu also visited the Gernika Plaza in Bogota, near the Basque club’s headquarters in the capital. The Plaza houses a replica of Picasso’s painting, along with a sculpture by Navarrese artist Xabier Santxotena.

As a way “to pay a very well-deserved tribute to a dear friend of Urrundik,” as part of the club’s 17th anniversary program, and on the 27th anniversary of the radio program “Presencia Vasca,” the Basque club named the main hall of its clubhouse after professor Mikel Ezkerro. The ceremony took the journalist and disseminator of the Basque-Argentine heritage totally by surprise, and included lunch with more than one hundred guests on the occasion of these celebrations.

On the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, the Jon Bilbao Basque Library at the University of Nevada, Reno is hosting an exhibit that aims to give a voice to those who suffered in the tragedy, and its aftermath. “Gernika Voices after the Bombs,” will be on display through October 2017 at the library’s entrance in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center.
