A business delegation from Idaho visits Bizkaia; Governor Otter will join them next Thursday

Thirteen people make up the delegation representing Idaho businesses who are interested in starting, or increasing their relations with the Basque Country on a trade mission accompanied by Boise’s Chamber of Commerce.  The group was welcomed on Tuesday by the Deputy General of Bizkaia, Unai Rementeria, who announced that Idaho’s Governor, Butch Otter, will be joining them on Thursday, June 22nd, marking new milestones in the relationship between Bizkaia and Idaho.

Paris-Basque Festival: The French capital city will become a Basque showcase from tomorrow until Sunday

From June 16th through the 18th the banks of the Seine will be dressed in red, green and white with this weekend’s Paris-Basque festival, an annual event that provides Parisians and visitors the opportunity to approach and enjoy a selection of traditions, products, music, sports, and food from the Basque Country all in a festive atmosphere.  For three days a small Basque village will be crated in the heart of Paris at the disposition of tourists, and fans of Basque traditions.

The Basque club of Saint Pierre et Miquelon is officially recognized by the Basque Government

A new Basque club has been added to the Basque Government’s official register of Basque clubs.  The Euskal Etxea in Saint Pierre et Miquelon, archipelago situated geographically near Newfoundland on Canada’s East Coast, but that is administratively part of France.  The Basque Government authorized this yesterday at its council meeting, recognizing it as an euskal etxea.

Local authorities and neighbors will inaugurate a statue in honor of the “Wheelbarrow Basque” tomorrow in Puerto Iguazu

Sculpture in honor of Guillermo Larregui that will be unveiled tomorrow at the Puerto Iguazu Cemetery

After traveling nearly 22,000 kilometers on foot, pushing his wheelbarrow, Guillermo Larregui (1885-1964), originally from Navarre, died in Puerto Iguazu in the Argentine province of Misiones, at the foot of the famous waterfalls.  This month Puerto Iguazu is celebrating the anniversary of this death; they will pay tribute to Larregui, better known as “The Wheelbarrow Basque,” unveiling a sculpture in his honor in the local cemetery “El Salvador.”

The Basque Government gives the green light for 2017 grants for Euskal Etxea with a budget of 900,000 Euros

The Basque Government gave the green light yesterday to the 2017 grants for Basque clubs, federations and confederations.  The total budget is 902,307 Euros, or 40,000 more than last year.  Basque clubs who are interested in applying need to wait for its publication in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country that is anticipated to appear on June 21st.  The day after its publication will mark the beginning of the application period with applications being accepted for a month from that date.

The sixth edition of Triki-Poteo at Euskaltzaleak held last weekend on the streets of San Telmo in Buenos Aires

This sixth edition of the Triki-Poteo organized by Euskaltzaleak was one of the most anticipated events for club members, but also for many Basques from Euskal Herria who, during their stay in Argentina, wouldn’t miss such a typical event.  As in prior events, Euskaltzaleak -- "Teaching Basque n Buenos Aires since 1944"-- enjoyed the company of members of other clubs in the area, as well as with the collaboration of musicians from Laurak Bat.

President of Paris Euskal Etxea, Sebastien Daguerre, and the Basque Government's director of Basque Communities Abroad, Gorka Alvarez Aranburu, were some of the guests who joined in the 70th birthday celebration at the Bordeaux Basque Club.  On the last weekend in May, and the first of June, Bordaleko Euskal Etxea shared the 70th anniversary of its founding with members, friends, institutions and sister entities.  And the book about its history is almost done (see details and, why not, buy one!).

As every year, the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea-Centro Vasco Frances will celebrate the beginning of the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, with its typical Sorgin Afaria – Witches Dinner.  In the heart of Buenos Aires, “the “Akelarre,” (coven) will include witches and spells beginning at 9:30pm, on June 24t.  With this anounce and invitation the Club's Sub-commission of Culture shares with us photos of its Herri Urrats celebration.

The Corpus Christi Basque Club presents the program for its Basque-Argentine-MbyaGuarani Cultural Festival

The celebration of the sixth edition of the Cultural Festival will take place on July 22nd and 23rd.  Over the two days, the Eusko Etxea and the city of Corpus Christi, in the north of the Argentine Misiones province, will be the site of diverse events like film screenings, talks and artistic performances.  The awards ceremony for the Literary Contest “Amazing Stories,” will also take place that this year including works in Spanish, Euskera and Mbya-Guarani.  The club invites everyone this Sunday to its fundrasining Bingo.

34 Euskal Etxeas from all over the world are part today of the 400 readers of 100% Basque at the Arriaga in Bilbao

Throughout today some 400 people will participate in the tenth edition of Classics Reading organized every year by the Bilbo Zaharra Euskaltegi in Bilbao.  The chosen title this year is 100% Basque by Itxaro Borda from Behe-Nafarroa and its readers will include people of all kinds, age and condition, physically at the Arriaga Theater, as well as other who will participate via video.  34 Basque clubs, Basque speakers and students from all over the world will be represented.
