Euskalmoji is ready to use on your phone

This news is recent and in regards to an app that allows us to send Basque themed emojis.  The app is called Euskalmoji, is free and can be used on both IPhone and Android devices.  The new icons represent various aspects of the Basque culture like sports, food, and festivals, as well as Basque expressions.  Euskalmoji is already available and can be used on all social media.

It has been many months of preparation, but everything is ready in Buffalo, Wyoming to receive from this afternoon the many people who will participate until Sunday in the program of events of the NABO Convention and Basque Festival 2017. It will be a wide program with tickets and offers for all tastes, with the artistic representation of people and groups from both the US and Euskal Herria. It's going to be a lot of fun! Nevada’s Attorney General Adam Laxalt to welcome Vice-President Pence to this year’s Basque Fry

Nevada’s Attorney General Adam Laxalt last year at Basque Fry 2016

Adam Laxalt, Nevada’s Attorney General who is expected to run for Governor in 2018, will host his third annual “Basque Fry” on August 26th at the Corley Ranch in Gardnerville, NV.  Menu items lamb testicles at this annual fundraiser for the Nevada’s Political Action Committee (PAC) and will also be attended by Vice President Mike Pence as its featured guest. The Morning in Nevada PAC was created in 2014, by Laxalt’s friends during his bid for the Attorney General seat.  Making him the youngest Attorney General in the country at the time.

The Deabru Beltzak Company will be performing in Montreal beginning today as part of the city’s 375th anniversary

Deabru Beltzak is performing daily beginning today at Montreal’s 375th Anniversary festivities in Montreal

The Basque theater company, Deabru Beltzak, will participate today through July 24th in Montreal (Quebec, Canada) in the city’s 375th anniversary festivities.  The group based in Bilbao will perform Les Tambours de Feu (The Drums of Fire) every day downtown.

“Memoria AMIA” published in Argentina, includes the Basque version of the song “Memory” by Leon Gieco

Basque subtitles to the song “Memory” done by Euskaltzaleak

The Mutual Israelite Association of Argentina (AMIA) has published AMIA Memory a book that relates to the process of video production by the same name, where some one hundred well-known Argentine singers sing the song “Memory,” by Leon Gieco.  This award-winning video, which has more than five million views, has been subtitled into fifteen languages, including Basque.  The translation was provided by students and teachers from the Euskaltzaleak Association in Buenos Aires.

As every July in Argentina in every corner of the country, the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is celebrated.  This year the 201th. Events and parades included various institutions and local organizations including the community organizations.  The Basques, participated as well in the process of independence that took place in Tucuman in 1816, as well as being present now, waving the Argentine flag along with the Ikurriña.

Javier Martija, former pilotari in US Jai-Alai arenas, in critical condition after suffering an accident in Bridgeport, Connecticut

The news came to us from Boni Guenetxea of the Miami Basque club passing along the bad news that Javier Martija from Ajangiz, Bizkaia, known to many as a Jai-Alai player as Marti, is currently in critical condition after a severe work accident that caused him to fall from a ladder in the Bridgeport area.  He is well-known and appreciated in Basque circles, and especially among pilotazales in New England and Florida.  The news has impacted his many friends who are wishing for a speedy recovery and send him much love and support as well as to his family.

The Deutsches Filmmuseum in Frankfurt is showing 8 Basque films throughout the month of July

Entitled, “Euskal Zinema - Filme aus dem Baskenland,” the series includes eight films that aim to provide the German public the possibility of getting to know “some of the most significant Basque films of the last half century.”  The activity enjoys the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Municipal Office of Culture, the Berlin Euskal Etxea, the Language and Literature Institute at the University of Goethe and the Basque Film Archive (Euskadiko Filmategia - Filmoteca Vasca).  The events are being coordinated by Lourdes Izagirre and Petra Palmer.

“Hator Hona,” at the Necochea Euzko Etxea has begun welcoming the six youth from the Basque Country

Youth in Necochea welcomed their guests from the Basque Country with an Agurra

Six youth from the Basque Country are currently in Necochea, Argentina who are the protagonists of Hator Hona 2017.  Working together with the Basque club in Necochea who will host a series of workshops and activities where they will teach and practice various disciplines related to the traditional Basque culture.  For example these will include Euskera, dance, music and herri kirolak (rural sports).  Hator Hona 2017 runs through August 4th and will conclude with the “Grandparents’ Day” celebration as well that of the Andra Mari Zuria.

The music group Errebal, that teaches the public how to Basque dance, begins a tour through Nevada and Wyoming

The goal is for anyone attending a Basque dance who may not know how to day, will leave having learned something, but above all, “having enjoyed it.”  They provide guided dance where they dance and teach how to dance because it is their thing, along with tempting music that gets everyone on the floor.  Their dances are “participative, free and fun.”  That is probably why they were invited for a two-week tour in the US.  This week they are at the Basque festivals in Reno, NV and next week they’ll be in Buffalo, WY at the NABO convention.
