Yesterday’s Official Bulletin of the Basque Country included Etxepare’s call for a position at the Freie University in Berlin

The Etxepare Basque Institute has published an announcement opening for a Basque culture and language lecturer at the Freie University in Berlin.  This position is for the upcoming 2017-2018 year, and language requirements include knowledge of various levels of Euskera, English and German. The deadline to apply is July 13th.

Askatasunaren Bidea celebrates 8 years along with the community from the Sarmiento Library

The Askatasunaren Bidea group in San Miguel, in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires, celebrated its 8th birthday and did so by showing a Basque film and with a toast.  As part of the event, the director of the Sarmiento Library, the headquarters of the group’s activities, honored the work done by Askatasunaren Bidea to spread the culture of Euskal Herria in the area.

The city of Elko, Nevada will be the site this weekend of the 54th National Basque Festival

A few days ago summer began in the northern hemisphere and with that a classic Basque festival in the US that always takes place the first weekend of July: the National Basque Festival in Elko. The event will celebrate its 54th edition this year and will take place June 30-July 2nd.  This year all events will take place at the Elko Euzkaldunak’s clubhouse.

With over 100 kids participating, NABO’s Udaleku 2017 began in Chino, California

Classes began on Monday, although participants in NABO’s annual children’s culture camp, Udaleku, arrived on Sunday from various towns in the US, Canada and the Basque Country.  Just over 100 campers will spend two weeks playing, making friends and becoming more knowledgeable of their Basque culture, and the Basque-American tradition.

The Argentine city of Tres Arroyos will add a sculpture and inaugurate its Basque Plaza on July 8th

Besides a replica of Picasso's Guernica painted by one of the club members, the Basque Plaza will also have a monument with lauburus and a silhouette of the Basque Country so that anyone visiting the green space located on Constituyentes and Costa Ricas Avenue  will encounter some of the most significant symbols of the Basque culture.  The inauguration of the space will take place on July 8th, when the Hiru Erreka Basque Club will also celebrate San Fermin and Argentina’s Independence Day.

A Basque name that is 39 letters long is the fifth longest place name in the world

At least this is how it is reported in the magazine The Mice Times of Asia that is published in Singapore, and Bangkok.  Leading the list of the 10 longest place names is a place in New Zealand with 85 letters that is also recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest.  With less than a half of these 85 letters there is a Basque place name that is also the longest on the European continent, at only 39 letters.  Following, the list of the longest place names of the world.

Denak Bat Basque Club in Mar del Plata launches Semana Vasca 2018 with a video at the Festival of the Ex Dantzari

Ex Dantzari Festivities at Denak Bat took place June 10-11th.

Next year the Denak Bat Basque Club in Mar del Plata will celebrate its 75th birthday and will celebrate it by hosting the Semana Nacional Vasca Argentina 2018.  Semana Nacional will take place in the middle of the southern hemisphere spring, and is why the center has begun promoting the event with a beautiful video that it presented during the festival of the Ex Dantzari.  Here’s the video.

Basques gather at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center to enjoy elite pilota

Basques traveled to San Francisco from all over the Bay Area, as well as other Basque communities in Nevada and Idaho, to enjoy a night of good food, friendship and elite pilota on June 2nd.  The event, sponsored by the Basque Cultural Center, Aspe Pelota, with the collaboration of the Kern Country Basque Club, brought four top pilotaris from the Basque Country to play exhibition games in both Bakersfield and San Francisco.

Members of the audiovisual Basque cluster, Eiken in Mendoza: agreement with local businesses and dinner at Denak Bat

Denak Bat in Mendoza held a dinner to welcome the representatives of the Basque cluster

The president of the Eiken Cluster, Aletxu Echevarria, and its director of international development, Veronica Sanchez, are touring Argentina for a week.  In the city of Mendoza, they signed an agreement with local Basque companies in hopes of fostering audiovisual productions between Argentina and the Basque Country.  They also met with the local Basque community, and were invited to dinner at Denak Bat by the club’s youth.
