We made it to August, and as every year, we will take this month off from publishing the daily EuskalKultura.com newsletter, to recharge our batteries to return on the first Monday of September. We dedicate August to working behind the scenes; in an initiative like ours there are many works “many of which aren’t seen” that are set aside during the year, but that still have to be completed. In the meantime, and somewhat more relaxed, while the Basque clubs and communities still continue working…

Many Basque communities and clubs around the world traditionally honor San Ignatius of Loyola as their patron saint. Some of them have been doing so for more than a century, preceding even the currently Basque clubs like those in Argentina; without forgetting cases like that College of the Vizcainas, in Mexico City, whose official name is the College of San Ignatius of Loyola, founded in 1732. But today we are traveling north, to the San Inazio festivities in Boise, Idaho.

The truth is all expectations were met at the NABO Convention/Festival 2017 in Buffalo, WY and it was a great success. Many came with a memory of the last time the convention was held here in 2011, and this edition did not disappoint. Once again the town of Buffalo, Basques and non-Basques alike, dedicated themselves to their visitors coming from Basque towns and communities from all over the country and Europe, serving the generous portions of hospitality and being good cowboys.

The event will take place October 14-15 in the city of Victory, where Francisco Eguiazu Ibarzabal settled in 1860, and where his family was raised. The idea for the reunion came from Sergio Eguiazu, one of the Francisco’s great-great grandchildren who currently lives in Rio Cuarto, but who has insisted that the gathering take place in Victoria as a way “to return to their roots.” “The main thing,” Eguiazu said, “is to break the ice, and know that we are more Eguiazu than we imagined, and basically to honor our elders.”
