As every year, the newsletter won’t be published in August: we are working behind the scenes and will return in September

Basque festival in Patagonia, Argentina

We made it to August, and as every year, we will take this month off from publishing the daily EuskalKultura.com newsletter, to recharge our batteries to return on the first Monday of September.  We dedicate August to working behind the scenes; in an initiative like ours there are many works “many of which aren’t seen” that are set aside during the year, but that still have to be completed.  In the meantime, and somewhat more relaxed, while the Basque clubs and communities still continue working…

The city of Boise, Idaho celebrated its traditional San Inazio Basque Festival with enthusiasm and warmth

In recent years the link between Idaho and Euskal Herria has been strengthened

Many Basque communities and clubs around the world traditionally honor San Ignatius of Loyola as their patron saint. Some of them have been doing so for more than a century, preceding even the currently Basque clubs like those in Argentina; without forgetting cases like that College of the Vizcainas, in Mexico City, whose official name is the College of San Ignatius of Loyola, founded in 1732.  But today we are traveling north, to the San Inazio festivities in Boise, Idaho.

The truth is all expectations were met at the NABO Convention/Festival 2017 in Buffalo, WY and it was a great success.  Many came with a memory of the last time the convention was held here in 2011, and this edition did not disappoint.  Once again the town of Buffalo, Basques and non-Basques alike, dedicated themselves to their visitors coming from Basque towns and communities from all over the country and Europe, serving the generous portions of hospitality and being good cowboys.

Singer from Lower Navarre, Michel Etcheverry, will travel to Argentina in November and will perform at Semana Vasca

The singer will tour Argentina for just over two weeks, and will include two performances in Buenos Aires and General Las Heras before going to San Nicolas.  Etcheverry will then travel to San Nicolas where he will sing on several occasions in during Semana Nacioanl Vasca 2017.  If there are any clubs interested in hosting a performance, some other dates may be available. Etcheverry will be accompanied by Jean-Louis Bergara, on the accordion and Beñat Chaubadindeguy on the drums.

The descendants of Francisco Eguiazu, who emigrated to Argentina from Bergara, will gather for the first time in Entre Rios, Argentina

The event will take place October 14-15 in the city of Victory, where Francisco Eguiazu Ibarzabal settled in 1860, and where his family was raised.  The idea for the reunion came from Sergio Eguiazu, one of the Francisco’s great-great grandchildren who currently lives in Rio Cuarto, but who has insisted that the gathering take place in Victoria as a way “to return to their roots.” “The main thing,” Eguiazu said, “is to break the ice, and know that we are more Eguiazu than we imagined, and basically to honor our elders.”

Young Basque volunteers promote playful and social activities among the children of Peru

In Lurigancho the Basque volunteers stimulate motor skills of girls and boys from 3 to 5 years. "We have to adapt to different environments and work situations," they say. Cooperating Basque Youth is a initiative promoted by the Youth epartment of the Department of Employment and Social Affairs of the Basque Government.

Basque writer Kirmen Uribe (Ondarroa, 1970)

The Basque writer Kirmen Uribe (Ondarroa, 1970) will participate in a residency program at the University of Iowa (UIOWA), with the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute, within the International Writing Program that is organized annually at the university. This residency brings together writers from different fields from around the world from August to September, organizing an entire literary program at the UIOWA.

The directors of the Traveling Basque Film Series in Argentina, Carlos Gabilondo and Norma Carrizo will attend Zinemaldi 2017

Zinemaldi or the San Sebastian International Film Festival will take place this year September 22-30. The event will gather film stars and will provide a wide range of activities related to the film industry.  With the goal of giving a push to the Traveling Basque film Series that they started in 2012 at the Euskaltzaleak Euskategi in Buenos Aires, its creators, Carlos Gabilondo and Norma Carrizo will travel this year to the festival to make contacts with references in Basque film and visit places like the Basque Film Archives.
