At the request of the institution’s board of directors, Argentine historian, Magdalena Mignaburu, along with Josu Legarreta, former Director of Basque Community Relations Abroad, are working on a book that will compile more than a century of the Cultural Charitable Association Euskal Echea’s history. Even if a publication date has yet to be determined, they are hoping to have it ready by March 2018.

As we pointed out in yesterday’s bulletin, the call for the 2017 Basque Government grants for Basque clubs appeared in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country (EHAA-BOPV) on June 21st with a budget of 902,307 Euros distributed in 782,307 Euros for Chapter IV activities and the remaining 120,000Euros for Chapter VII activities. Today begins the month-long window to apply that concludes on Friday, July 21.

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country, published on June 20th, included the call for grants aimed at Basque clubs in support of operating expenses, activities and infrastructure during 2017. The total budget is 902,307 Euros, 782,307 of which are allocated for Chapter IV and the remaining 120,000 for Chapter VII activities. Deadline to apply is July 21, 2017.

The Etxe Alai Basque Club decided this year, on the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika to join in the commemoration of the Day of Peace in a special way, to be celebrated on September 21st. Responding to the invitation from the Literary Group “And they Return to being Trees,” on this day the club will plant a sapling on one of the sidewalks in the city. Etxe Alai also reported on its latest “Member’s Day.”

Summer is here and the academic year is over, although new classes will begin at the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) that won’t stop. Nor will the classes in Basque language or culture that are taught with the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute, by professor Haizea Elizondo Gorroño. In fact the classes for next semester were just published with offerings in both Basque language and culture in various levels.

On the day of the club’s 28th anniversary, the Guillermo Larregui Basque Club in Chacabuco announced that Álvaro Ocáriz and Héctor Mazzolini from the Euzkal Etxea in San Nicolas won the National Mus Tournament that took place last weekend in Chacabuco. The team from San Nicolas will travel to the US to represent represent Argentina in the World Championships August 25-September 3rd in San Francisco and Chino, California.

Eresbil is the name of the National Archive of Basque Music and the place where sheet music, books, graphic archives, sound files and any kind of documentation and information related to Basque music is kept. From its headquarters in Errenteria (Gipuzkoa) and its website, Eresbil has now provided a guide and a map of music and dance festivals slated for summer 2017 in the Basque Country.

As part of an initiative presented by the President of the City Council, Daniela Leon, the city honored Pilar Lopez who at the age of 15 has become the only jota singer born in Argentina that has undertaken this career from a distance of more than 10,000 kilometers from Pamplona. Pilar is a dantzari at the Navarrese Center in Rosario, where she learned to sing jotas and pasadobles, and is also an online student of the Navarre Jota School.

The idea emerged last year as an activity to celebrate the Day of the Basque Language: filming a video explaining in Basque how to prepare this typical Navarrese beverage. Now the moment of truth. The process is over and the liquor is ready to be tasted. The Basque students in Azul told EuskalKultura.com that the experience of making Patxaran, and the final result made in Azul has an Argentinean touch.

Mus is easily one of the biggest draws in Basque clubs in the United States. As a testament, nearly every NABO member organization sent representation to the NABO Mus Tournament that took place last weekend in Caruthers, CA at the Campos Brothers Farms. At the end of the day, the team from Homedale, Idaho’s Txoko Ona club emerged victorious. Zorionak, Andres Lejardi and Gregorio Undabeitia (first, from Homedale, ID) and Amador Zabalbeascoa and Victor Albistur (second, from Los Banos, CA).
