The Corpus Christi Basque Club, in the Argentine province of Misiones, has once again met the challenge. Undeniable proof of its capacity to meet challenges is the unprecedented Basque-Argentine-MbyaGuarani Cultural Festival that this small Basque club recently held successfully. The event was focused on featuring not only the Argentine culture, but also that of the Mbya Guarani people, who are native to the area. It was also attended by references of the Basque Diaspora in the area.

On July 31, the Basque territories of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa celebrate the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The Basque clubs in Argentina also do the same and pay tribute to their patron saint on July 31 as well as with festivities that develop throughout the month of August. The proposals are varied, but always with the same objective: to maintain a celebration that the Basque immigrants brought with them from their homeland to settle in a new country.

It’s not easy for students in Argentina to get together outside of the classroom in places where they can speak Basque; and so that is why initiatives that propose such encounters are always welcome. With this goal in mind, and encouraged by the success that it had at last year’s Semana Vasca in Necochea, the local Basque club organized a Mintzodromo for Basque students in the city. The experience was a very good one and the possibility of holding another one at the end of winter vacations is also being discussed.
