Even if it was formally inaugurated in 1954, the Rosario Basque club library doesn’t have a name to identify it among the other community services provided by the club. That is why the Euskal Etxea’s board of directors has invited the Basque community of Rosario, and the whole Diaspora to participate in the selection of a name that gives it “greater identity.” The deadline for submitting proposals is May 31st.

The arrived in Euskal Herria last Sunday, in Eibar, Gipuzkoa where they are staying for a week learning Basque dances. They are dance students from the University of Utah. They are not Basques themselves, and don’t have any relation with Basque, except for their interest in dance, and wanting to learn Basque dances. They were preceded by a previous group from Utah who visited Eibar on a similar trip in 2008. The Kezka Dantza Taldea authored the following article on Dantzan.eus.

They say that it is necessary to keep the memory alive so that history does not repeat itself. Endorsing this concept, institutions in the Basque Diaspora do so every April 26th on the anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika. This year, on the 80th anniversary of the event, euskal etxeas and Basque communities around the world, denounced what happened in the Basque town and sent a message of peace through multiple activities.

The new Director of the Basque Community Abroad, Gorka Alvarez Aranburu, and members of his team from the Basque Community Abroad Directorate of the Basque Government, took a work trip to Madrid last week to visit various places linked to Basques and met with representatives of several groups in the local Basque community.

Originally from Gral. Acha, Mauro Funes is currently living in Cordoba where he is pursuing a degree in gastronomy. A special part of his training took place during the Gaztemundu program 2016 where he participated representing his hometown Basque club. Less than a year since is experience in Euskal Herria, Mauro returned to Gral. Acha to teach a workshop on Pintxos for members and friends of the Basque club.

Sara Pagola, Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina-Mercosur visited the city of Las Flores in the province of Buenos Aires. The local Loretako Euskaldunak Basque Club had just recently elected its new board of directors, with Federico Eduardo Inchauspe as its new president.

The Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea organized a tribute to Pascual Harriague that included the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Gernika, and the launch of the 10th Hall of Wines with performances by the Ibaiko Izarra Basque Club dancers from Concordia, and a conference on the presence of Basques in the wine sector in Latin America. In this context the Basque club also announced that it is managing an area to build the “Gernika Space.”

The President of the Government of Navarre thanks “the huge effort, and human example of thousands upon thousands of people from Navarre,” that had to leave their land and contribute to the country that welcomed them, “without renouncing their deep feeling of belonging to Navarre,” and advocate “to maintain a permanent link” with the Diaspora. These are the words of Uxue Barkos in an interview published on Geroa Bai-Argentina’s website.

Juan Manuel Lopetegui is the new president of the Union Vasca Basque Club in Bahia Blanca, as elected by the General Assembly held April 28th. Besides that, those gathered also approved the 2016 report on finances and activities, as well as voting to increase membership dues that will now be 130 pesos for active members, and 100 for participating members.

For another year, May is here and the beginning of the annual Basque picnic and festival season in the western US. This Saturday, May 6th, the Basque festival in Fresno will be the kick off for the festival season that runs all summer and concludes on October 14th with the Basque picnic in Rocklin, CA. Between there will be several festivals including the NABO convention in Buffalo, Wyoming July 21-24.
