Tribute to Manolo Arriola

Muslaris from 10 Basque clubs gathered in Macachin, Argentine Pampa, for a tournament in honor of Manuel “Manolo” Arriola, mus icon in Argentina and other countries in the world where this typical Basque card game is played.  During the tribute, and with his widow present, the brand new National Mus Commission unveiled a commemorative plaque. Remember that an Argentine National Mus Commision was formed at the beginning of the year.

In accordance with the club’s statutes, the Euskaldunak Denak Bat Basque Club in Arrecifes, Argentina held its annual elections at the clubhouse where part of the board was elected.  The annual assembly was held on April 22nd in Arrecifes.

Today the call for Gaztemundu 2017 was published in the BOPV with the application period beginning tomorrow

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country published the Resolution of April 25, 2017 by the Director of Basque Communities Abroad, opening the application period for Gaztemundu 2017.  This year’s program will be dedicated to “traditional Basque musical instruments,” including the alboka, atabal or gaita danborra, the gaita and xirularrua, panderoa, trikitixa, txalaparta, txirula and the txistu.  Anyone interested in participating in the program should prepare a two minute video demonstrating your skill and knowledge of any one of these instruments.  The application period begins tomorrow, and the deadline to apply is June 5th.

Neuquen passes the baton to Viedma, who will host in September the 4th Meeting of Patagonian Euskal Etxeas

Participants at the 3rd meeting of Patagonian Euskal Etxeas

The 3rd meeting of Patagonian Euskal Etxeas held in Neuquen brought delegations from six cities to exchange ideas and goals in hopes of strengthening ties between Basque clubs in the region.  There were meetings, talks, walks, film and a farewell dinner complete with dancing and gifts.  As in 2016, there will also be two meetings this year of clubs in Patagonia.  The next will take place at the end of September in Viedma-Patagones, organized by the local Aberri Etxea Basque Club.

Boise State University Women’s Soccer team is headed to the Basque Country for a cultural immersion trip

The women’s soccer team is preparing for a trip to Barcelona and Donostia May 9-18th.  Before leaving they took time out to learn more about the Basque culture touring the Boise Basque Museum and Cultural Center and the Jacobs-Uberuaga boarding house, as well as finding out more about the Basque culture in Boise.

Miren Arzalluz, Director of the Etxepare Basque Institute, thinks that after the first phase “where the basis of our activity was established,” the institute is “very well-situated for a consolidation phase.”  Regarding the program “Euskara Munduan,” the work done by coordinator, Kinku Zinkunegi will now become part of the Etxepare Institute.  Interview by Nerea Azurmendi in El Diario Vasco.

People from the Diaspora will participate this Sunday as observers in the consultation on the right to decide

Supporters of Gure Esku Dago are carrying out various consultations on sovereignty and the right to decide.  The consultations are organized by local groups and one of the conditions for participation is to be registered in that town. This condition that leaves the Diaspora out of voting, was revised in Getaria, Gipuzkoa where even if they can’t vote, an Argentine and a Canadian were asked to participate in the process as observers.

Partially renewed the FEVA board of directors: very low turn-out of the member Basque clubs

Fifteen voted in favor of the only list of candidates presented at the latest FEVA elections held at the General Ordinary Assembly last April 22nd.  Just sixteen Basque clubs attended out of 60 with right to vote. They were electing two vicepresidents, and a number of directors and other members of the Board of the Basque-Argentine Federation of Basque Institutons (FEVA).  After the assembly Basque club representatives welcomed Sara Pagola, Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina and Mercosur.

In Montevideo, the exhibit “Gernika gogoratuz, 80 Years: a Basque Look from Uruguay,” wanted to show the people behind the painting

The Basque Diaspora joined in the commemoration of the Bombing of Gernika in a huge way last week organizing various activities and commemorations.  Eighty years after the destruction of the Basque town, Basque clubs in Argentina and Uruguay remembered the attack once again, supporting a message of peace so that such events don’t reoccur.  Following is a photo chronicle of the events.

Ph.D. Student writes an opera about Basque whaling in Red Bay as his Ph.D. dissertation

Aiden Hartery, Ph.D. candidate at the Western University in London, Ontario is writing an opera about Red Bay and Basque whalers in the 16th Century for his Ph.D. dissertation. Hartery, who holds a BA in Music, as well as a Masters of Music Composition, is drawing on some of the oldest documents ever found in Canada, basing the opera on the story Juan Martinez de Larrume from Orio, Gipuzkoa.
