EuskalKultura.com’s stand at the 34th Fair in Sara

Today is the second day at the 34th Cultural and Writers’ Fair in Sara with EuskalKultura.com’s stand at the local Sports Pavillion.  The Sarako Idazleen Biltzarra is the main event for writers and literary creators, as well as for material in relation to the Basque culture in Iparralde.  This is a meeting point for the euskaltzale audience with authors and the annual production of books, records, and cultural material in this part of the country. If you get a chance, visit Sara and make sure to come to our booth and say hi.

The Sarako Idazleen Biltzarra, writers’ fair and gathering in Iparralde, is marking its 34th edition next weekend in Sara, Lapurdi.  This year it will include a stand with information on the Basque culture and the diaspora.  This isn’t’ the first time that EuskalKultura.com and the Diaspora have been represented at the event, a referential event in the area of Basque culture in Iparralde that has expanded this year from one day to two.  Mark your calendars for April 16th and 17th in Sara.

The Basque Government and the Parliament of Bizkaia will plant a sapling from the Tree of Gernika in Auschwitz

A delegation led by Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu and the president of the Parliament of Bizkaia, Ana Otadui, will travel next week to Auschwitz to plant a sapling of the tree of Gernika in the vicinity of the concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, in Poland.  The visit hopes to strengthen ties between the two icons, Auschwitz and Gernika, as part of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Gernika and other Basque towns during the Spanish Civil War.

Necochea will celebrate Aberri Eguna, Korrika and its 72nd Anniversary this Sunday, while requesting youth to come from Euskal Herria

A lot of news is coming from Necochea: The local Basque Club is requesting youth from Euskal Herria to participate in their Hator Hona exchange program. The invitation is aimed at people between the ages of 18 and 30 for a two-week stay from July 14-August 4th.  The Euzko Etxea in Necochea will also celebrate its 72nd anniversary this weekend with a program that includes the celebration of Aberri Eguna and Korrika, two dates engraved in the heart of the Basque community in Necochea.

In the year of its 140th anniversary that will be celebrated in July with a special program, Euskal Etxea of Cuba, has organized a special program this week to celebrate Aberri Eguna, The festivities began yesterday, and will conclude on Sunday with the actual annual festive gathering, this year at the La Cecilia resort that will include a children’s Korrika.  Today and tomorrow talks, film screenings and other events at the provisional club headquarters.

170 gathered at the first dinner of the year at Beti Aurrera Basque club in Chivilcoy

At its first event of the year the Chivilcoy Basque club had joy and sadness.  Joy because some 170 gathered and danced to the rhythms of Jorge Zunino’s accordion; and sadness in remembering the passing of Mabel Robiani in February.  Mabel was the founder, along with Nelba Calonge, of the club’s dance group.  Mabel’s colleagues, friends and family members, all joined in the tribute.

“Ni ez naiz izan,” winning film in the 5th short film contest for Basque students in Madrid

Basque teachers in Madrid (Esti, Ane and Lander) along with members of the first prize winning group, along with Kinku Zinkunegi and Itziar Urretabizkaia

The fifth edition of this contest that highlights the best short film created by Basque students in various levels of Euskera studying the language in Madrid was held last Friday at the local Euskal Etxea.  Ten films competed this year, and there were also awards for the best actress and best actor.  Participating at the event were Kinku Zinkunegi, coordinator of HABE’s Euskara Munduan program, and actress, Itziar Urretabizkaia (see video of the winning film).

FEVA will hold partial elections on April 22nd for board members; only one list of candidates has been presented

The General Assembly to elect part of FEVA’s board of directors will be held on April 22nd at 9:30am at the Laurak Bat Basque Club in Buenos Aires.  Offices to be filled are first and second vice-presidents, four directors and their alternates, auditors, and members of the Honor Court again with their alternates.  The only list presented and formalized is led by Juan Jose Olasagastia and Arantxa Anitua, as first and second Vice-Presidents respectively.

The documentary “Belascoain” debuts tomorrow in Argentina, the first in the “Siete Calles de La Habana” series

Belascoain, the Street of the Pilotaris, is one of the documentaries that is part of the “Siete Calles de La Habana,” (Seven Streets of Havana) project by Angel Katarian in collaboration with a group of researchers.  The full-length film will be shown as part of the Basque Film Series that the Euskaltzaleak offers tomorrow at its headquarters thanks to Carlos Gabilondo.  The event will begin at 20:30 at Bernardo de Irigoyen 826.
