There were two major gastronomic events in Rosario, Argentina in May, and both of them provided the flavors of Euskal Herria thanks to the participation of local chef Itziar Aguirre. At the Gastronomic Week she taught an open class about pintxos at the Zazpirak Bat Basque Club Restaurant. At the Street Food event, on Oroño Boulevard, she also attended with a stand. In June there will be more activities, a third edition of Street Food and a wine tasting event at the restaurant on Monday the 12th.

This festive day that is co-organized annually aby the National Federation of Navarrese Centers and the Government of Navarre, with the support of a town in the Provincial community elected each year to host the event, will come to Cascante next Saturday for its 29th edition. The initiative hopes to pay tribute to those from Navarre who had to leave their homeland, but who have never forgotten where they are from, and who work to maintain this connection.

We have received various news from the Euskel Biotza Basque Club in Roldan, in the Argentine province of Santa Fe, including that it will hold its General Assembly to elect its board next Saturday. After this, the club will continue with “Basques Door to Door,” a project that didn’t just allow the creation of an especially large dance group, but also a group of Basque students that gathers both online and face to face.

The album is already recorded and in a few weeks will be on the street. They are Basques born in the USA who have grown up in the heart of their Basque communities, and who have now recorded some of their tunes, led by, Utah Basque, Jean Flesher. “What Basque in the west hasn’t dance with his music in Basque festivals in Nevada, Utah, California, Idaho or Wyoming? The Etxepare Basque Institute has opened the application process for four lecturers who will teach Basque language and culture in five universities in Europe and America. The universities include the Sorbonne, in France; Lomosonov, in Russia; UCLA in the US, and University of Chile and the Pontifical Catholic University in Chile. Deadline to apply is June 5th.

On May 25th, Argentina commemorated the 207th anniversary of the May Revolution. As a way to pay tribute to Basques and their descendants who participated in the creation of a nation, Basque clubs accompanied the various ceremonies and parades that took place across the country. As an example of what occurred everywhere in the country, with ikurriñas parading even in communities that don’t have a Basque club, we selected celebrations in Arrecifes, Chacabuco, Chivilcoy and Pergamino.

This is a Basque show created and produced in Argentina. Its name, EKIL (Euskal Kantuen Ibilbide Luzea) is subtitled as “The Long Journey of Basque Song,” and is due to Rosana Entizne, music specialist, euskaltzale, professor and dynamic supporter of Basque culture in Argentina. It is a different show, musical revue, songs and words that penetrate the world of Basque singing beginning from Aita Donostia or Usandizaga and arriving to Ez Dok Amairu or event to songs like Guk Euskaraz by Urko.

It is a book that, for years, was the only reference for anyone wishing to learn more about the Basque sheepherders in the United States, and Basque immigration to this country in the first half of the 20th century. Written by tather Afrien Gachiteguy, Les Basques dans l’ouest américain was the fruit of a trip and stay touring the “Basque West” from May to December of 1951. It was published in 1955 and has been out of print for many years, but has now been reprinted by Iru Errege Basque publisher in Baiona.

“Science and Exile,” will be the focus of the Hamaikabide Elkartea Association’s upcoming XV Conference that will be held November 7-11 in Donostia. This association, whose focus is research and diffusion in the area of exile in 1936, invites anyone wishing to participate or contribute papers, to email hamaikabide@gmail.com by July 1st.

Pilar Lopez Virgili is a dantzari from the Navarrese Club in Rosario. She became involved as a child. Pilar loves singing and dancing and she learned to sing jotas and pasadobles, until which time, encouraged by those around her, she was put in touch with schools that teach Jotas from Navarre. The Navarrese Jota School has now invited her to participate in the 2017 San Fermin Festivities, in the jota rounds, on stage with other local artists. In addition, the city of Rosario has decided to honor Pilar for her talent and dedication and present her with a certificate on June 9th at the City Council.
