Asier Vallejo, director for the Basque Communities Abroad, has sent word of a series of proposed modifications to the 2013 grants for Basque Centers, due to the economic crisis situation. The note explains that the emergency grants will be maintained, but reductions have been proposed in certain areas of the grants for Basque Centers. The deadline for applications remains the same: February 28th.

The Basque genealogist association Antzinako does a great job in the study and diffusion of documental resources and genealogical archives in the Basque Country. Its website provides very useful information, including online sources where you can obtain information such as the parish archives of Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa. Regarding Nafarroa, these sources aren’t yet digitized, but Antzinako is uploading information to its website on births, marriages, and houses in various towns in Navarre that go back, in some cases, to 1599.

"Zuri guztiak ez dira elurrak" (Not all white is snow/All that glitters is not gold), “kea baino alferragoa izan” (to be lazier than smoke), “zain eta muin” (in body and soul)…the blog esaerajatorrak.com, created by Maite Goñi, a professor in Ordizia, publishes a Basque proverb every day with its English and Spanish equivalents. It is a fun and easy way of approaching the vast heritage of Basque sayings, for Basque students as well as for native speakers that, in some cases, don’t know all the ways to express oneself in Basque.

Korrika 18 will begin on March 14 in Andoain (Gipuzkoa, Basque Country) and during eleven days it will tour Euskal Herria to end in Baiona on March 24. This popular race in support of the Basque language is organized by the coordinator of Euskaltegis AEK and its goal is to raise money to support Basque literacy for adults. The race is reaches far into the Diaspora and each year more and more clubs participate and organize parallel activities. If you would like to organize a Korrika in your area or country, contact AEK.

The proposal is new and was created as a response to a repeated request. “There are people who can’t attend workshops and always ask if they can be done online. Taking those requests into account, it occurred to me that using Facebook could be interesting in order to reach this audience,” explained from Argentina Mariana Fernandez Castelli, account administrator. Fernandez Castelli, who has a lot of experience in the area, will venture into this medium that will maintain the spirit of face-to-face get-togethers. The course is offered in Spanish.

The Etxepare Basque Institute unveiled its last three publications yesterday. On the one hand, two titles are part of the the Euskal Antologiak Saila (Basque Anthology Series), both in three languages (Basque, Spanish and English): The Contemporary Basque Narrative by Mikel Ayerbe, and Children and Youth Literature Today by Jone Arroitajauregi, and on the other, a part of the Euskal Sorzaileak collection: the story Katu jendea by Eider Rodriguez in Basque, Spanish, French, Dutch and German. All of these are available on Etxepare’s website in pdf format.

The Eusko Biltzar in Coronel Pringles will open a Basque conceptual jewelry exhibit this Saturday. The pieces featured in the show were created by students in the workshop held at the Lagunen Etxea Basque club in Laprida during the 2012 school year. These classes were taught by Professor Silvia Azpiazu, who encouraged the students to draw inspiration from Basque sculptors like Basterretxea and Ibarrola when creating their jewelry.

The work, which will be around 200 pages long, tells the story of the Basque Nationalist Party (EAJ-BNP) in Argentina chronologically, including photos, interviews and an appendix with a documentary. The author plans to finish by the middle of the year, so that she can present it at the Sabino Arana Foundation in Bilbao in November, and later in Donostia, Gasteiz, Iruña and Baiona, and possibly at the Durangoko Azoka in December. It will also be included in the new publications presented in the Buenos Aires Book Fair in 2014.

Mara Mara Hizkuntza Zerbitzuak company launched a platform called Mintzanet.net last December, sponsored by the Donostia’s city hall, Topaguna and Etxepare. Mintzanet.net has already facilitated more than 900 conversations to practice Euskera, some from Argentina, Colombia, the US, Chile, Australia and England. Mintzanet places people who want to practice Basque with volunteers that help them do so through online conversations via Skype. Do you want to participate? We’ll let you know how. It’s really easy!
